STAR WARS: A NEW HOPE (1977) - Anthony Daniels Collection: Pair of C-3PO (Anthony Daniels) FingersA pair of C-3PO (Anthony Daniels) fingers from George Lucas' Star Wars: A New Hope. Based on concept artwork by Ralph McQuarrie and designed and created by sculptor Liz Moore, the C-3PO costume heavily evolved throughout the series. For the first film, the costume's hands comprised separate finger covers and back plates, worn over black gloves. These were later upgraded to simpler one-piece cast gloves for the sequels. Sculpted by Brian Muir, the finger covers are made of metal, plated with a gold-coloured finish, and comprise of one complete middle finger and three separate finger components. These make up a smaller finger, likely the pinkie, and are no longer adhered together. The lot comes with two custom acrylic hand-display stands. Remnants of foam padding are adhered to the interiors of the three individual finger components, and both fingers exhibit discolouration, tarnishing, minor chips to the vinyl plating, and scratches to the interiors from production use and age. BACK TO THE FUTURE PART II (1989)/BACK TO THE FUTURE PART III (1990) - Marty McFly's (Michael J Fox) "Mattel" HoverboardMarty McFly's (Michael J. Fox) hoverboard from Robert Zemeckis' sci-fi adventure sequels Back to the Future: Part II and Part III. McFly first obtained his hoverboard from a young girl in the year 2015 to escape from Griff Tannen (Thomas F. Wilson) and his gang, and continued to use it throughout both films. The hoverboard became McFly's signature item and remains one of the franchise's most beloved props. Two primary styles of hoverboard were made for production: wooden boards for effects work, including shots of the performer riding the board, and lightweight foam boards typically used for shots of the board being carried. This hoverboard is of the latter kind, constructed primarily of rigid lightweight foam, painted pink and given a photo-print finish on both sides (as opposed to the lenticular print used on some boards). The top of the board features the word "HOVERBOARD," with Mattel logos, a foot-pad, zig-zagging pink-and-green fastening strips, a hole where the handle was once attached, and a fuzzy pink foot strap (these are frequently missing from the Mattel board props). The bottom features plastic detailing, including two silver-coloured hover pads. This hoverboard exhibits wear from use and age, including adhesive residue around the fastening strips, cracks and dents in the foam, and paint chipping throughout, most extensively around the hover pads. It is accompanied by a letter of authenticity from Bruce Moriarty, second unit first AD; two printed copies of the hoverboard concept art; and a printed photograph of Michael J. Fox with a hoverboard. In 1989, the film was one of the first 25 films selected by the United States Library of Congress for preservation in the National Film Registry. This sketch of Luke Skywalker in front of Darth Vander with a loose design of the landspeeder blocked in comes from the personal collection of William Plumb. Over time he developed personal relationships with many renowned artists including Ralph McQuarrie, Drew Struzan, Lawrence Noble, and Dave Dorman. In 1986, Plumb organized the "Space Fantasy & Reality Art Expo" at the Maturango Museum in Ridgecrest, California, to benefit the handicapped. The event was supported by contributions from Plumb's artist friends and even Lucasfilm - all of whom loaned materials to Plumb for the display. It was through these personal relationships that Plumb acquired many of the finest pieces in his collection. Throughout the years, Plumb organized or appeared at countless other events and shows, where he proudly displayed his collection and discussed his passion for Star Wars original art with both artists and fans. In 1996, Plumb hosted a panel at San Diego Comic Con on collecting Star Wars artwork specifically. In 2001, he and a small group of fellow collectors commissioned Lawrence Noble to produce the now-famous "Bronze Yoda." TRON (1982) - Program HelmetA program helmet from Steven Lisberger's Tron. Programs, the user-built electronic beings that inhabited the digital world, wore circuitry-lined outfits, including helmets, throughout the film.Tron is a truly groundbreaking film, being one of the first productions to feature entirely computer-animated sequences. However, most of its iconic visual effects were created using matte-photography techniques and backlit animation. The actors were shot in black-and-white on a black background, then printed on large, high-contrast film and hand-coloured using rotoscoping. This process proved to be so complicated and costly it was never again used for a feature film. This custom-made helmet is made of white vacuum-formed plastic covered in intricate circuit-board decals made from black tape, and the inside is lined with white foam. The helmet exhibits wear from use and age, including scuffing, discolouration, peeling tape, and adhesive residue.Estimate: £10,000 - 20,000 ΩΔ View all lots from TRON (1982)Bidding for this lot will end on Thursday, November 9th. AMY WINEHOUSE - Amy Winehouse's "You Know I'm No Good" Music Video Beehive HairpieceA beehive hairpiece worn by five-time Grammy award-winning singer-songwriter Amy Winehouse in the music video for her hit song "You Know I'm No Good", which featured on the critically acclaimed album Back to Black. This lot comes from the collection of professional hair stylist Tracey Cahoon, who worked with Winehouse from 2003 to 2010.Winehouse sadly passed away in 2011, but has left a legacy in the music world, with many artists citing her as a significant influence. She is fondly remembered for her eclectic soulful music and unique aesthetic, including her iconic beehive hairstyle. Cahoon first met Winehouse in 2003 and they worked together on her first photoshoot. Throughout the day, the pair had been testing out various looks, and when Winehouse expressed interest in knowing if a beehive would suit her, Cahoon jumped at the chance to create one. They both loved how it looked, and after Winehouse wore the beehive on The Charlotte Church Show in 2006 it became her trademark. Her hair was often jokingly referred to as "The Eighth Wonder of the World!"Directed by Phil Griffin, the music video for "You Know I'm No Good" focuses on Winehouse's turbulent relationship with a male character, and was shot at 3 Mills Studios in East London. Winehouse wore her signature beehive hair throughout, and this is one of two wigs styled for the shoot. The black synthetic wig was prepared using a combination of mousse, and set with heated rollers. It was then shaped with backcombing, and hairspray was used to keep the hair in place. To seamlessly blend the wig with Winehouse's hairline, her fringe was positioned to sit neatly against the piece. It was styled to appear intentionally dishevelled and unkempt, acting as a modern take on the vintage polished beehive, and fitting in with Winehouse's overall style.Cahoon collaborated with artists Clive Burton and Stephanie Carlton Smith to create the custom stand that the wig comes presented on. Made of laser-cut Hamar acrylic, the stand comprises three staggered profiles of Winehouse's face made to exact measurements. It also comes presented inside an acrylic case which is screwed to the base. Dimensions (displayed in case): 44.5 cm x 41.5 cm x 81.5 cm (17 1/2" x 16 1/4" x 32")Additional Information:The hair piece was loaned to the Design Museum in London and was displayed as part of their Amy: Beyond the Stage exhibition which ran from November 2021 to April 2022.Estimate: £15,000 - 30,000 M Bidding for this lot will end on Friday, November 10th. BEATLES, THE - Casbah Club Booking Diary 1959-1960The booking diary used by Mona Best at the legendary Casbah Club, where The Quarrymen - who later became The Beatles - famously played a residency. After watching a television report on The 2i's Coffee Bar in Soho, Mona decided to convert her house's basement into the Casbah Club. The venue opened on 29 August 1959, and she began selling membership cards and sought a band to perform on opening night.A friend convinced her to meet with Ken Brown and his friend George Harrison, who played in the The Les Stewart Quartet, and the band was given a Saturday night residency, until they split and Paul McCartney and John Lennon joined Harrison and Brown. As The Quarrymen, the four played the Casbah every Saturday, and even helped decorate the club's interior. However, after only eight shows, The Quarrymen quit over a financial dispute with Mona. The diary is bound in red leather effect vinyl with gold foil lettering reading "Desk Diary". Inside are multiple sheets of paper displaying the weeks (excluding Sundays) from 1 January 1959 to 2 January 1960. Mona amended the dates and days to coincide with the first few weeks of 1960. The diary contains Mona's handwritten notes and doodles, and mentions several bands she booked. On Saturday 9 January, she wrote "Quarrymen"; this is the only known written record of Lennon, McCartney, Harrison and Brown being booked under this name, though it is not known whether this performance took place. Interestingly, the band booked for Sunday 10 January is "Rory Storm & The Hurricanes", whose line-up included Ringo Starr. There is also a note on the back of the first sheet reading "Find Woods number; also Richie's address", which also may be an early reference to Starr. The paper inside the diary displays discolouration, marks and tearing due to age. The diary's leather exterior exhibits several marks and edge wear from use. It remains fragile and should be handled with care. Dimensions: 22.5 cm x 15.75 cm x 3 cm (8 3/4" x 6 1/4" x 1 1/4")Additional Provenance:An image of the Quarrymen diary entry can be seen on page 55 of The Beatles: The True Beginnings by Roag Best. In the book, the caption incorrectly attributes the dates to October 1959 when the date in the diary is 9 January 1960.Estimate: £20,000 - 40,000 M Bidding for this lot will end on Friday, November 10th. WHAM! - Wham! First Demo Recording January 1982 CDA CD of the original Wham! demo recorded in 1982 by producer Paul Mex. The four-track master demo was recorded on a TEAC 144 4-track recorder in the lounge of Andrew Ridgeley's family home. It was the very first recording the pop duo ever made as Wham!, and it helped them secure a record contract with Innervision Records. Parts of the demo can be heard in Chris Smith's Netflix documentary Wham!. Mex discovered the multi-track master demo cassette in his collection and gave it to George Michael in 1998, but not before archiving it digitally on a hard drive, which he kept private for many years, before transferring it to this one-off CD for safe-keeping. The demo has never been fully released to the public. The CD includes the tracks "Careless Whisper" and "Wham Rap! (Enjoy What You Do)", and Mex added acapella versions of both songs for his own enjoyment. The lyrics in these early versions differ slightly from the released versions. The lot comes in a white card sleeve, with details of the recording printed on the front, and the tracklist and credits on the back. Dimensions: 12.5 cm x 12.5 cm x 0.5 cm (5" x 5" x 1/4")Sold without copyright; see notice in the Buyer's Guide.Additional Information:George Michael and Andrew Ridgeley sent around 25 cassette copies of the demo to record companies at the beginning of 1982, hoping to secure a deal. This initially yielded no results until Mark Dean at Innervision Records finally took them on. None of those cassettes are known to have survived. Production company Ventureland searched extensively for a copy of the demo for the Netflix documentary, spending months scouring George's homes for the four-track master that Mex gave him in 1998, but to no avail. Ridgeley provided the solution when he suggested that Mex may have kept a copy.Estimate: £1,000 - 2,000 M Bidding for this lot will end on Friday, November 10th. It is believed that three mechanised APCs were built for the production at different scales: a full-size APC made from an airport plane tug; a 1/6 scale APC with working lights and a rotating gun turret; and this 1/12 scale model, which was used for the scene where the dropship first deposited the APC onto the surface of LV-426 and for the arial shot as the APC enters the atmosphere processor. The miniature's body comprises a vacuum-formed plastic shell over a balsa wood chassis, with a running gear taken from a radio-controlled car. It was built as lightweight as possible because it had to sit inside the miniature dropship as it descended, and the model unit were wary of damaging the dropship miniature. The model features its original halogen lights on both the front and the back, although one of the front lights no longer illuminates. The strobe light on the top of the APC above the cockpit was removed after production but the wiring is still present. The gun turret can be manually positioned to rotate or moved to the back of the vehicle, as it does in the film when moving through low doors, and mounting holes for its alternative positions are present. The miniature is fully remote-controlled and can reach speeds of 20mph. It is accompanied by the original remote-control unit. There is a switch on the underside of the model to activate the electronics. The APC has undergone some sympathetic restoration since the production wrapped, including the replacement of one of the cannon barrels and some of the wheel cover tabs; these are a different colour to the original components to highlight their replacement. The tyres are production-made back-ups as the originals degraded since production. The APC is accompanied by four spare, production-made tyres and four brass hubcaps, which were originally conceived to be part of the model but were deemed too heavy for use. Also included are four modern tyres, carefully cast from a production original, which can be swapped in to drive the APC and avoid damage to the originals.A miniature light and grill are also present; these appeared in the film on the two larger APC models, but not on this one. They were originally affixed to its top - the registration points can still be seen - but were removed to allow greater clearance as it left the dropship. The lot also includes a 106-page final-draft script dated "September 1985" and featuring a crew member's name handwritten on the card cover; 12 miniature floor tiles for the USS Sulaco and elevator miniature sets; a "Bug Stomper" crew jumper (size "M") and jacket (size "L"); 30 previously unpublished behind-the-scenes photographs of this and the other APC and dropship miniatures, including one photograph which this model photo-matches to; five call sheets; eight shooting schedules; a 15-page list of "Special Photographic Effects"; four pages of simple storyboards attached to a notes page; a production memo; and printed concept drawings of both the dropship and the APC. The crew items have some minor staining from age and use. The lot is also accompanied by a letter of authenticity from a senior special effects technician on the production who has reviewed and authenticated the APC. WHO, THE - Bass Drumhead and Wrap Artwork For Keith Moon's Pictures of Lily Premier Prototype Drum KitA bass drumhead and wrap artwork used on the prototype of Keith Moon's iconic Pictures Of Lily drum kit, the first to feature personalised custom graphics. In 1967, Moon asked the promotions manager of UK manufacturer The Premier Drum Company, Phil Franklin, to create a unique drum kit incorporating pop art designs. Franklin asked creative director Jeff Hurst to "knock one up" - a quote from Premier's in-house publication Talking Drums - referring to creating a prototype kit for the most famous and controversial drummer at the time. It is believed that at least three final kits were made. These items were originally obtained by Mark Ellen, the drummer for British band Vanity Fare, from an ex-employee from the Premier factory. Ellen purchased these items for his daughter Holly as The Who were her favourite band. The hand-painted 22" bass drumhead is decorated with a pop-art 3D "The Who" logo and the Premier brand name. The brightly coloured plastic wrap is split into three panels; "The Who" logo with a miniature of Moon's face; a risqué image of Lily (British socialite and actress Lillie Langtry); and the text "Keith Moon Patent British Exploding Drummer".The drumhead's paint has begun to peel and crack, notably in the middle, likely from when Moon played it during the testing stages. The wrap's protective top plastic layer has begun peeling and exhibits light scratching. The lot is accompanied by a copy of A Tribute to Keith Moon (There Is No Substitute) by Ian Snowball, two handwritten letters of authenticity from Holly Ellen, and an array of images and setlists relating to her late father's time in Vanity Fare. Dimensions (drumhead): 52.5 cm x 52.5 cm x 2 cm (20 3/4" x 20 3/4" x 3/4"); (wrap) 37.5 cm x 66.5 cm (14 3/4" x 26 1/4")Additional Information:An image of Moon and Hurst selecting the final artwork for the "lily" motifs for the wraps features on page 130 of A Tribute to Keith Moon (There Is No Substitute) by Ian Snowball. This image was originally published in the August 1967 issue of Go magazine.Mark Ellen was best known as the drummer with the 1960s and 70s band Vanity Fair for 44 years before retiring in 2015. During his career, he was also a successful restorer and dealer of vintage drums, selling them to an array of clients worldwide. Some of his patrons included Ginger Baker and Keith Moon's godson, Zak Starkey, current drummer for The Who. Ellen sadly passed away in February 2021.Estimate: £6,000 - 12,000 M Bidding for this lot will end on Friday, November 10th.
