Mackmurdo (A.H.), Herbert P.Horne and Selwyn Image, editors. The Century Guild Hobby Horse, vol.1-7 & with the suppressed issue No.1 (April 1884), together 8 vol., woodcut decorative title by Selwyn Image, plates and illustrations, woodcut decorations and initials by Mackmurdo and Horne, original parchment-backed blue boards with small woodcut illustration by Image on upper cover and the Guild's monogram by Mackmurdo on lower, suppressed issue No.1 bound in similar parchment-backed boards but without woodcuts and with original pictorial wrappers bound in (slightly soiled), all uncut, rubbed and soiled, 4to, Orpington, April 1884 and London, (vol.3-7 Chiswick Press), 1886-92.⁂ Highly influential magazine produced by one of the most important 19th century Arts and Crafts organisations, rarely found with the suppressed issue. The Century Guild was founded in 1882 by the architect Arthur Heygate Mackmurdo to produce decorative work in every field of interior design including architecture, decorative painting, furniture, metalwork, ceramics and glass. There was an emphasis on crafts rather than mechanical production and in particular the new style of Art Nouveau, evident in the woodcut decorations and monogram by Mackmurdo. The architect Herbert P.Horne and artist & writer Selwyn Image were the fellow members and co-editors but many other artists were involved with the group. In 1884 they started The Century Guild Hobby Horse, concentrating on the visual arts but also including literature and social issues. The first issue was published in April 1884 but no others until 1886 when they started again with No.1, and in 1893 it was renamed The Hobby Horse but only lasted for three issues until 1894 (these last three issues not present here). It was a high quality magazine printed on handmade paper, illustrated with woodcuts and lithographs and used photogravure for reproductions, while the progressive typography and design of the main part was done or guided by Emery Walker and printed at the Chiswick Press. Contributors include Burne-Jones, William and May Morris, Ruskin, Oscar Wilde, Simeon Solomon, Laurence Binyon, Lionel Johnson and Wilfrid Scawen Blunt. The Guild influenced C.F.A.Voysey and Charles Rennie Mackintosh and other members of the Arts and Crafts movement; the magazine developed book-design leading to periodicals such as The Yellow Book and The Savoy.

He formed one of the first organised collections of minerals under the aegis of Pope Sixtus V. 'The collection reflects the state of knowledge extant at the time, and therefore includes objects of presumed magical or medicinal virtue as well as those which are correctly identified and described' (Sinkankas).

Horology.- Mudge (Thomas) Thoughts on the Means of Improving Watches, And most particularly those for the Use of the Sea, first edition, 16pp., trace of small ink stamp to title, modern library half calf, 8vo, 1765.⁂ Extremely rare with no copies traced at auction and ESTC locating 5 copies, of which only 2 are in this country (though the National Maritime Museum also holds a copy). Mudge was the foremost horologist of his time and is still recognised as having contributed the single most important invention to watch-making - the lever escapement. In this short paper he acknowledges John Harrison's achievement in winning the prize for his watch for ascertaining the longitude of a ship at sea and says his work's publication "cannot be supposed to be done with a View to prejudice him; indeed his mechanical Merit is too great to receive any Hurt by the Publication of any Thing upon that Subject by me, or any Body that I know."

Originally published in Spanish in 1639 it was the first significant work on mining in that language, and indeed the first book on mining in the Americas. Includes the extraction of silver using mercury, and the extraction of gold, silver and copper by boiling with salt solution and mercury in a copper vessel. 'Barba was ... pastor of St. Bernards at Potosi, in South America. While there he had the opportunity of studying minerals and mining, extraction of silver and assaying, and became very skilful in these branches of science.' (Ferguson).
