A Regency mahogany metamorphic library armchair, circa 1815, after the design by Morgan and Sanders, the curved and moulded toprail above a similar splat and scrolled arms with applied roundels, the buttoned red leather covered seat and sabre legs, hinged at the front rail to form a set of library steps Provenance: Private Collection, Cheshire The design of this lot is closely related to that of Morgan and Sanders, first published in Ackermann's Repository of Arts, July 1811 (P. Agius, Ackermann's Regency Furniture & Interiors, Marlborough, 1984, p. 60, pl. 29). A chair of similar design and attributed to Morgan and Sanders is in the collection of Trinity College, Oxford (R. Edwards and P. Macquoid, The Dictionary of English Furniture, London, rev. ed., 1954, vol. II, p. 291, fig. 15). For a similar metamorphic library armchair see Susan E. A Franco-Flemish woven wool figural tapestry, late 17th/early 18th century, depicting a courting couple in classical style, before a tree and architectural background, within foliate border, approximately 270cm high, 200cm wide Provenance: Reputedly previously in the ownership of King Farouk I of Egypt (1920-1965), after which purchased by Mr Andreas Vatidis, and then gifted to the family of the present owners.King Farouk was deposed in 1952 and lived in exile until his death in 1965. The greater part of his fine collection was dispersed after his deposition, starting with a monumental auction of silver, watches and Vertu by Sotheby's in 1954 entitled 'The Palace Collections of Egypt', and continuing with further dispersals of the furnishings during the following years and after Farouk's death.Certainly possession had passed by the 1960's to Mr Vatidis, who first kept the tapestry at his Alexandria residence, before moving it first to Athens, and then to his Corfu house.The tapestry was then given to the current owners' family, and has been kept in a West Berkshire house ever since

World War Two Wing Commander John Anthony O'Neil DFC signature piece. Great emphasis is placed on this signature of one of the most redoubtable pilots of WWII. Flight Lieutenant Later Wing Commander John Anthony O'Neill DFC. In 1939 with 58 Sqn Bomber Command he flew on the first 'Nickel' leaflet dropping raids over mainland Germany and on the returning flight two engines failed and he was forced to crash-land his Whiteley, the first bomber to be lost in WWII. Transferring to Coastal Command he flew convoy support and anti-submarine patrol. Back at 58 Sqn he carried out raids on German airfields in Norway, bombed Maastricht airfield in Belgium during the 'Blitzkrieg' and bombed Germany for the first time at Dusseldorf. Awarded the DFC he transferred to Fighter Command in September 1940 and with 601 Sqn based at Exeter took part in the Battle of Britain. In 1942 he joined a Beaufighter night fighter squadron in India and destroyed the first Japanese Mitsubishi bomber attacking Calcutta. In 1944-45 back in England he commanded Beaufighter and Mosquito Sqns flying intruder sorties over Europe. Good condition Est.
