R. Ackermann's Lithographic Press : Albert Durers Desjors of the Prayer book, one volume dated 1817. CONDITION REPORT: Interesting additional information provided at the time of consignment : THE FIRST MAJOR BOOK PRINTED IN BRITAIN BY MEANS OF LITHOGRAPHY. As documented by Abbey and Twyman, a few earlier attempts to print books using lithography were made in the Britain, but Ackermann s book is "the first serious attempt to popularize the new method" (Abbey). Dürer s marginal drawings for the manuscript prayer book of the Emperor Maximilian, now in the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek in Munich, were considered a national treasure in Germany, and lithography was used to produce several facsimile editions of it. Alois Senefelder, the inventor of lithography, printed an edition in Munich in 1808 entitled Albrecht Dürers Christlich-Mythologische Handzeichnungen, which included 43 border designs printed in several single colors matching those that Dürer had originally used. Ackermann s 1817 edition, the first important production from his lithographic press, used plates that were copied from Senefelder s 1808 edition by an unknown artist. The book s title page was printed in red and black, as was a single text page of the original manuscript. According to Michael Twyman, "These two pages may well be the earliest examples of colour lithography from separate stones to have been produced in Britain"

The Terling Chapel chandelier: Fine and rare George II brass twelve-branch ecclesiastical chandelier, the central baluster column with gadrooned knops and surmounted by trefoil-form hanging loop above tooled dove ornament, the bulbous central knop issuing twelve scrolling S-form branches, each terminating in everted rimmed sconce and dished circular drip tray, approximately 86cm diameter, suspended from an antique, probably contemporary wrought iron chain with elaborate serpent terminals and painted wooden corona ceiling mount.Provenance: Removed from Terling Chapel, the oldest United Reformed Church in Essex. Founded by Thomas Welde, Thomas Shepherd and Thomas Hooker in 1624. All three men were ultimately driven by their Religious convictions to flee to America and each later became prominent figures in early Colonial America. Thomas Hooker was involved in the founding of Connecticut and Thomas Shepherd helped to found Harvard University, Thomas Weld became a notable figure in Massachusetts, he was tasked with and successfully negotiated the reopening of supply routes from England which had ceased in 1641 due to the Civil War.By repute, both Chandelier and Lot 1366, the Chapel pulpit, are of 17th century origin and were part of the fabric of the first congregational meeting place at The Manse. Pevsner refers to the Candelabra and the pulpit as 17th century and this is repeated in the 1921 H.M.S.O. publication - Inventory of the Historical Monuments in Essex, Volume 2, Central and South west: 'Fittings-Candelabra: of brass with twelve branches and bird on top, ornamented iron chain, late 17th-century. Pulpit: hexagonal with raised and moulded panels, late 17th-century, stem missing.'Despite these assertions, comparisons with known dated examples point more towards a mid 18th century date and it seems highly likely that the candelabra was purchased new when the Chapel congregation moved to their present purpose built building in 1752. For similar examples see Rupert Gentle and Rachael Field - Domestic Metalwork 1640-1820, published Antique Collectors Club, pages 181-183, particularly examples 10,11,15,16,17 CONDITION REPORT Total height of chandelier to top of suspension ring approximately 72cm not converted for electricity. One candle arm has an old repair which has now failed and end of candle arm detached but present. Two sconce rims are missing, one scone rim is a 20th century replacement, recycled from another metal element, embossing evident on close inspection, one or two splits at seams of sconce dishes, some elements - particularly sconces are loose with screw threads failing, generally speaking the chandelier appears to be in good original condition without alterations and mostly intact, detachable wings of the bird finial are present.Ceiling mount - total height from iron suspension loop to top of wooden mount 33cm, iron screw extends a further 23cm. One triangular projecting 'sunburst' element broken, part is present but detached. Some old worm holes, splits, blistering to paint/varnish. Various antique pencil inscriptions to the plateau of the wooden mount. Iron chain total maximum length approximately 240cm, in good order.

Rare British Airborne 1st Model Step-In Paratroopers Smock, manufactured by Rego Clothiers Ltd, produced in a heavy gabardine khaki coloured material with working central front zip, Newey Patt press stud fittings to the front, storm type cuffs and armpit ventilation. Original shoulder straps. Lower side pockets have the original zips. Interior of the smock has the original “Jackets Parachutist” label, having Rego Clothiers Ltd makers details, size details etc. War Department inspection stamp but no date letter visible. The smock shows light service wear. Overall a very good example of an extremely rare item of British Airborne forces clothing. These smocks were the first examples produced and issued to the newly formed British Airborne Forces. They were a direct copy of the early German Paratrooper smocks, which were also a step-in pattern. These early smocks were issued to the Airborne forces which took part in the Bruneval Raid (Operation Biting). They were soon proved to not be very effective as they were not quick to get in and out of and as a result were very soon replaced by the more commonly found Denison Smocks and Parachute Oversmocks. Very few of these early pattern smocks remain on the collecting market as many were dumped or altered for use after WW2. For more details about these items please see “Denison British Airborne Specialist Clothing From WW2 to the Present Day” by Bruce Wilson.

The model made of brass with propellers to the rear fin and also the front. Engraved to the centre “Presented to Lieutenant J Launders Commander HMS Venturer for Sinking U-864 while both boats were submerged from the crew 9th Feb 1945”. Accompanied by a polished brass stand which has engraved to the centre “HMS Venturer” and one side “sunk U-771 Nov 11th 1944” and the other side “sunk U-864 Feb 9th 1945”. Model measures 43 ½ cms in length. Captain James Stuart “Jimmy” Launders DSO & Bar, DSC & Bar, ADC, was one of the most highly decorated and famous British WW2 Submarine commanders of WW2. He joined the Royal Navy as a Cadet in 1938 and on completion of his training was commissioned as a Midshipman onboard HMS Repulse on 1st January 1939. He served on this ship until he was posted to his first Submarine which was HMS Umbra. He was later posted to HMS Venturer where he was commander and it was on this ship which he was most successful. Before the sinking of U-864 he was already credited with the sinking of thirteen German vessels. On the 9th February 1945, HMS Venturer was tasked with sinking the German submarine U-864 which was carrying secret documents about the German rocket weapons programme and Jet fighters to Japan. The German U-Boat had to return to its base due to problems with the boat. HMS Venturer managed to track the U-Boat using only its hydrophone. They finally tracked the U-Boat and followed it waiting for it to submerge before making an attack, after sometime it became clear that U-864 was not going to do so, Launders made the decision to press home an attack while both were submerged, something that had never been done before or done since. Launders ordered the crew to fire all torpedoes with a 17.5 second delay between each shot. U-864 made a crash dive to try and avoid the torpedoes, sadly for them they dived straight into the fourth torpedo, the boat suffered severe damage to its hull causing the boat to instantaneously implode with the loss of all hands. U-864 officially sunk 31 nautical miles from Bergen, Norway. Launders was awarded a bar to his Distinguished Service Order for this action, other members of his crew were also awarded gallantry medals. U-864 was commanded by Korvettenkapitan Ralf-Reimar Wolfram.
