(Signed) The Beatles and Mersey Beat Bands Autograph Book. Obtained by the vendor's sister, Geraldine, on the 7th March 1963, when she attended the very first Mersey Beat Showcase, held at the Elizabethan Ballroom, Co-op House, Nottingham. Geraldine missed the chance to get John Lennon's signature, as he was busy loading guitars into a coach; his signature is therefore absent. The showcase was organised by Brian Epstein and hosted by the Cavern Club's compére Bob Wooler, This was the first time that The Beatles had played in Nottingham, they headlined the show, the other performers that night were Gerry and The Pacemakers, The Big Three, and Billy J Kramer and The Dakotas. Signatures for members from all bands that performed at this show are present and kept in this autograph book, along with other autographs that Geraldine obtained at shows that she attended, most notably those of Freddie and The Dreamers.

1910 SIGNED DINNER MENU CARD TO COMMEMORATE THE BRITISH ANTARCTIC EXPEDITION & THE DEPARTURE OF THE TERRA NOVA the cover printed with 'Complimentary Dinner, Capt. Scott CVO RN and officers of the 'Terra Nova'. To be held at the Royal Hotel on Monday 13th June, 1910 at 6.30pm sharp, given by members of the commercial community of Cardiff, Chairman: Trevor S Jones, President of the Cardiff Chamber of Commerce'. The front then signed by Capt. Scott and fellow expedition crew members including Teddy Evans, Edgar Evans, Herbert Ponting, Robert Forde etc. The interior with the banqueting details and verso with toasts. Two days after this dinner a large, excited crowd cheered the Terra Nova as she departed Roath Basin in Cardiff's 'Tiger Bay' with the doomed British Antarctic Expedition starting its race for the South Pole. TheTerra Novahad arrived in Cardiff five days earlier to finish preparations for the voyage and to take on fuel. 300 tons of Crown Patent Fuel, 100 tons of steam coal and 500 gallons of engine and lamp oil were donated by Welsh coal companies. All the cooking utensils were given by the Welsh Tin Plate Company of Llanelli and even Scott's sleeping bag was bought with funds raised by the County School in Cardigan. In addition to support in kind, a further £2,500 was raised in Cardiff, more than from any other city. The dinner at the Royal Hotel in St Mary's Street, Cardiff, will have been as much a thank you to the business people of the city as it was a commemoration for the imminent departure. The Cardiff business community played a crucial role in fund-raising and raising sponsorship and in the provision of dock facilities. In recognition of the Welsh support for the expedition, Cardiff was designated the Terra Nova's home port, and it was to Bute Dock that she returned at the end of the expedition on 14 June 1913. In June 1909 William Davies, editor of theWestern Mail, met with the young naval officer Lieutenant E.R.G.R. Evans, who was planning his own Antarctic expedition. Davies was very keen on supporting what he initially saw as a Welsh National Antarctic Expedition — Evans's grandfather was probably from Cardiff — and thought that there would be support for such a project from Cardiff businesses.Soon afterwards, Evans learned of Scott's planned expedition and joined him as second-in-command, bringing with him the support of the editor of theWestern Mailand the prospect of Welsh sponsorship. Davies was instrumental not only in rallying business and public support in Wales for Scott's expedition, but in persuading his compatriot, the Chancellor of the Exchequer, David Lloyd George, to provide a government grant of £20,000. Arguably, without the influence of Davies, the support of theWestern Mailand the Welsh shipowners, Scott's expedition would not have left in time to reach the Pole in 1912. There was another Evans in theTerra Nova's crew, Petty Officer Edgar Evans from Rhossili, Gower. He had been to Antarctica with Scott on hisDiscoveryexpedition of 1901-4 and was chosen by Scott to be a member of his polar party on the 1910-12 expedition. Evans was the first to die on the return march from the South Pole. Captain Scott's links with Cardiff are commemorated by the lighthouse erected in 1915 in Roath Park Lake and the bronze plaque of 1916 on the staircase in City Hall. In June 2003 a commemorative sculpture was unveiled in Cardiff Bay.The farewell dinner was hosted within the ‘Alexandra Room’ of the Royal Hotel in Cardiff, and a memorial dinner for Captain Scott was held at the hotel three years later. The room is now named the ‘Captain Scott Room’ in his honour and an annual dinner of commemoration is held by the Captain Scott Society on the anniversary of his farewell meal.Provenance: obtained by Colonel Joseph Edward Crawshay Partridge who will have been in attendance, bears his signature, by descent

1929 Singer Junior 4-seater saloon, reg. no. VX 1239. 848cc engine, 3-speed gearbox. The vendor's husband describes the car as follows:"An older restoration but drives perfectly on the road. Driven and seriously campaigned by the same owners for 57 years. Two gearboxes, a petrol tank and radiator to go with the car.The Singer was bought from a scrapyard in Stanway, Essex, by local resident and vintage motoring enthusiast, Harry Booth, sixty-four years ago. It was in reasonable working condition and Harry’s daughter, Merriel, aged sixteen, decided it would be an ideal car in which to learn to drive. The extensive yard in front of “The Old Cottage Paint Shop”, Harry’s business in London Road, Stanway at the time, proved ideal for Merriel to practice gear-changes and become familiar with the controls of an elderly car, its accelerator between the clutch and the brake. But on returning from work one afternoon, she discovered that her Dad had sold the Singer to a couple from Great Maplestead who had answered an advertisement for a 1930s Sunbeam which he had for sale in Exchange and Mart. David and Sylvia Rouse were keen vintagents but decided that the Sunbeam was not for them and asked Harry if he had anything else he might like to sell, whereupon he suggested the Singer. A deal was done, the princely sum of £5 changed hands and the car was driven back to Maplestead, but when David opened the door, a mouse jumped out. That was in the summer of 1962.Returning home from work that evening, Merriel was most disappointed to discover that the Singer had gone. Some thirty years later she came across the car at a rally and declared, “That’s my car!”, to a surprised David Rouse who initially doubted her story, but after being shown a photograph of Merriel sitting on the bonnet, doubted no longer. After driving it home and having renewed the magneto cap, David immediately began to use the Singer as everyday transport travelling to and from Marconi in Chelmsford, where he worked as Patents Officer, twenty miles each way for nine months after which he decided that a major overhaul of the car might be sensible. He and Sylvia subsequently used the car mainly for Vintage Sports Car Club events, covering more than 44,000 miles whilst competing in hill climbs, driving tests, navigational rallies and tours. They were adamant that the car should never be trailered and would drive frequently as far as Llandrindod Wells, for example, on a Friday afternoon averaging 30mph or so, in order to compete on the Saturday. David kept a detailed record of every journey, time taken, average speed, oil used, and petrol consumed; it makes fascinating reading. On one occasion, they had driven from Maplestead to Builth Wells when the magneto began to misfire and the decision was taken to, “return home whilst the engine was still running”, a distance of around 450 miles, almost non-stop.The Rouses owned a number of vintage and classic cars, competing seriously in all of them, but the Singer was one of their favourites which they kept for 57 years. When David died in 2017, Sylvia decided that the time had come to sell the collection, but two remained, a BSA that had been David’s first, and the Singer which, when Merriel asked whether or not it had been sold, Sylvia replied, “But it’s yours if you’d like it.”Merriel has been its custodian since 2019 but it is now time for a new owner and the Singer will be sold at auction, all proceeds going to St Helena Hospice, Colchester".It is supplied with a massive history file, including photographs, which is a joy to read. A truly loved old car. (Subject to 12% buyers' premium inclusive of VAT).
