Boer War interest - Scarce Battle of Majuba silver and enamel medallion pendant, (Chester 1899), maker John Millward Banks, 17mm diameter. N.B. The Battle of Majuba Hill on 27th February 1881 was the main battle of the first Anglo-Boer War and was a resounding success for the Boers. During the Second Anglo-Boer War, “Remember Majuba” was a rallying cry of British soldiers. Exactly 19 years after Majuba Hill, on 27th February 1900, General Piet Cronjé and 4,000 of his men surrendered after the British victory at the Battle of Paardeberg. In the jingoistic poem, The Absent-Minded Beggar, by Rudyard Kipling, there is a line which reads: “He is out on active service, wiping something off a slate”. Hence the wording on the medal: “MAJUBA WIPED OUT” signifies the restoration of British pride.

Robert Burns interest: Volume lacking title page but possibly Reliques of Burns by R H Comek, circa 1808/1809, printed by McCreery, board ends, titled to spine - Miscellanea 1808, together with a copy of Burns poetical works signed by Thomas Moncrief. (2) Reliques Of Burns - R H Cromek - 1st numbered edition - 1808/9 I'm pretty convinced (after research ) that this is an early UK version, if not a 1st, of Reliques of Burns, collected and published by Robert Hartley Cromek in 1809. I'm putting 1809 as the publication date as Crook's Preface was written in November of 1808. Publication date could be November 1808 if Cromek has dated his preface to coincide with the publication of his collection. Someone, maybe even Cromek himself, has stuck a hand-written title piece on the spine, giving this tome the title of Miscellanea 1808. If this was Cromek, maybe he wanted to give this book this title, but changed his mind as there was already a Miscellanea Perthenisis of 1801. Or maybe it was someone who found this book and without the title page for guidance thought this was a copy of Miscellanea published in 1808 (due to the date of the preface.) It has a number 832 (or S32 of J32) stamped on the cover. I have no idea what this could signify unless Cromek had his first run number stamped. I have included letters found within this copy which are obviously a correspondence from someone trying to research the book's provenance. I have also included photos (three) of the title page and preface pages from Boston University's copy of Reliques to show why I believe this to be a very early, if not the earliest copy of Reliques.

Also sold with a wooden cut of John Douglas's father judging a boxing match entitled 'Time and Judgement at the National Sporting Club. Mr Douglas and Mr Zerega' 24.5 x 19cmProvenance: By family descent.Mr John William Henry Tyler 'Jonny' Douglas (1882-1930) was a true English sporting hero and excellent all round sportsman. He represented England at the 1908 Olympics where he competed as a middleweight boxer and subsequently won a gold medal having beaten the Australian boxer Reginald 'Snowy' Baker. The Times described the match 'as one of the most brilliant exhibitions of skilful boxing allied to tremendous hitting ever seen'. If that wasn't enough he exhibited great prowess as a cricketer playing for Essex from 1901-1928, and amazingly Captaining the team from 1911-1928. Not surprisingly he also played for England Captaining the Team eighteen times. He was named Wisden Cricketer of the year 1915. This sporting legend sadly died in 1930 when the ship he was sailing in with his father sank after a collision. It is said he died trying to save his father who also lost his life. This lot represents a rare glimpse into the life of a forgotten British sporting hero.
