Albert Lebourg (French 1849-1928)Route de village, Hondouville-sur-Iton. Oil on canvas. Signed lower right37.5 x 64 cm.(14 3/4 x 25 1/4 in.) The authenticity of this work has been confirmed by Monsieur Francois Lespinasse. The French Impressionist and landscape painter Albert Lebourg was born on 1 February 1849, in Monfort-sur-Risle. Lebourg originally started his career as an architect, before becoming a student at the École des Beaux Arts et l¬ademie de Peinture et de Dessins in Rouen. After meeting the famous collector Lapelier in 1872, he taught drawing at the École Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Algiers where he met Jean Seignemartin, a painter of the Lyon School. Under Seignemartin's influence, Lebourg's palette lightened and his paintings grew increasingly Impressionistic in style. In 1878, Lebourg returned to France and became a student at the studio of Jean Paul Laurens. He first exhibited with Monet, Sisley, Renoir, and Pissarro on Montmartre Boulevard in 1878. In 1893 Lebourg became a member of the Société des Artistes Français and painted mainly in Rouen and Auvergne, as well as along the banks of the Seine. He spent twelve years between 1895 and 1907 travelling aroun Europr including the Netherlands, England, Switzerland and Belgium.Lebourg's main 'Impressionistic subjects' were landscapes; he became fascinated by the different lighting conditions over the course of a day capturing the momentary and transient effect of sunlight in the open air (en plein air) rather than in a studio from sketches. This approach was influenced by Claude Monet and the circle of other Paris-based artists of the 1860s.Lebourgh had a retrospective of his work at the Galerie Georges Petit, Paris in 1918. Three years later in 1921, after a stroke which partially paralysed him, he ceased his career and moved back to Rouen where he died seven years later. The present work is a typical example of Lebourg’s interplay between colour and light - it was painted in Hondouville-sur Iton, a small village between Louviers and Evreux (Eure) circa fifty kilometres from Rouen.
λ Manuel Marin (Spanish 1942-2007) Untitled Painted metal ceiling mobile Incised with signature on one of the black elements. 91.5 x 140cm (36 x 55 1/8in.) Manuel Marin (1942 - 2007) was born in Cieza, Spain. From the age of ten, Marin became fascinated with the art of bull fighting and six years later went on to fight his first bull. Over the next four years, Marin fought with many of the great bull fighters of the age including Chicuelo Segundo, Pedras Montero and Manuel Benitez, better known as ‘El Cordobes’.In 1962, aged twenty, Marin travelled to London where he worked in an art gallery. It was here that the young Spaniard met the renowned sculptor Henry Moore who later employed Marin as his assistant. After two years in London, Marin moved to New York where he secured a job as an art restorer in the Mallorca Brothers’ Gallery and later opening his own gallery: The American Indian Art Gallery. Notable clients at the AIAG included Andy Warhol, William Kooning, Jean Michel Basquiat, Robert Indiana and Haring Keltan, many of whom also became personal friends. Influenced by the work of Alexander Calder, in 1969 Marin turned to sculpture and kinetic art. A year later in 1970, his first exhibition was held at the Allan Brown Gallery in Scarsdale, New York. Recognisable by their bright colours and a-symmetric shapes, Marin’s distinctive mobiles have been exhibited all over the world. λ Indicates that this lot may be subject to Droit de Suite royalty charges. A pair of diamond and sapphire scroll earrings by Rubel Frères, c.1935, each with nine curved branches, set with baguette-shaped diamonds and terminating with an invisibly-set oval-shaped sapphire, the hinged clips with baguette-shaped diamond semi circles with circular-cut diamond borders, French platinum control marks, partially obscured maker's mark in lozenge RFrs.. 29.9g, 4.2cm For a similar pair of earrings by Van Cleef and Arpels see Van Cleef Arpels: The Art of High Jewellery (Paris: Les Arts Décoratifs, 2012), p. 106. Rubel Frères John and his brother Robert opened a workshop on Rue Vivienne in Paris, 1915. The Rubel Frères were producing jewellery that soon caught the eye of the great jewellery houses, such as Van Cleef & Arpels. The quality of their workmanship for the great houses was recognised to the extent that they were allowed to sign some of their pieces with their own maker's mark RFrs. With the outbreak of the war, the brothers followed Van Cleef & Arpels to New York in 1939. They instantly took to the lavish night life. Tradition holds that whilst at the El Chico club, John sketched a flamenco dancer that developed into the first iconic Van Cleef & Arpels ballerina brooches. However, when the rights to produce these pieces could not be agreed, the rift that ensued between the brothers and Van Cleef & Arpels was irreparable. 'Mystery Set' refers to the unique technique associated with Van Cleef & Arpels, which they patented in 1933. The mystery is how rows of gemstones could be so perfectly set whilst no metal to hold them in place could be seen; no claws, collets or mounts were visible. The free-standing illusion is formed by a delicate lattice of rails slotting into grooves cut into the pavilion of each calibré-cut gemstone. The process takes hundreds of hours and could only be undertaken by a very small number of jewellers. Similarly set jewellery by anyone but Van Cleef & Arpels is referred to as 'invisibly-set'. The oval-shaped sapphires in lot 1409 are invisibly-set. Mystery-set pieces are extremely rare. Rarer still are invisibly-set oval stones. The sapphires in lot 1409 slot into the collet rather than a neighbouring stone, as with typical invisible settings, and use screws to their reverse enabling no fittings to be visible when worn.

§ Paul Henry R.H.A (Irish, 1876-1958). A View on Achill Sound, 1943-5, signed 'Paul Henry' lower right, oil on canvas, 51cm x 61cm. Provenance: Private UK Collection. Dr. S.B. Kennedy, March 2018. This picture is probably called A View of Achill Sound. Or at least that’s what it appears to represent. Henry painted several boats of this nature, often on Achill Sound, which was his nearest point to Achill Island. From there to Keel, which was his base of Achill, was about seven or eight miles. When he first went to Achill in 1911, it was the people of the Island who first caught his attention, but from around 1915 he turned to landscape painting. This picture of Achill Sound was painted around 1943-5. Although Henry left Achill for Dublin in 1919, he often made sketches and drawings from his notebooks, as this picture demonstrates. We are grateful to Dr Kennedy for his assistance in cataloguing this lot which has been recorded as number 1335 in his ongoing cataloguing of Paul Henry’'s oeuvre. Please note that Artists Resale Right is additionally payable on this lot up to a maximum of 4% on top of the hammer price (visit www.dacs.org.uk for more information) . § Some organic brown staining spots spread over the area of the canvas.2 white diagonal marks/lines in the right hand half of the canvas. one is approximately 15cm long, the other 10cm long.Under UV light the organic brown staining is luminescing.Organic brown staining spots on the frame too.
