Society for the Encouragement of Arts, Manufactures, and Commerce. Premiums..., 48pp., first edition, stitched, uncut, lightly soiled and frayed at edges, [Goldsmiths' 9469], 8vo, 1759.⁂ The Society, now known as the Royal Society of Arts, was founded in 1754 to award "premiums" (cash prizes) to support improvements in the arts and sciences. This is the second of the Society's published list of premiums, which it produced from 1758 until 1780. It describes premiums for achievements as diverse as "sowing the greatest quantity of acorns" to "securing ships bottoms from worms", and several concerning the colonies such as for the cultivation of cochineal in South Carolina, olive trees from south of the Delaware river, raisins, silk in Georgia, Connecticut, Pennsylvania and North Carolina and wine: "As producing Wines in our American colonies will be of great advantage to those colonies, and also to this kingdom, it is proposed to give to that planter, in any of our said colonies, who shall first produce (within seven years from the fifth day of April 1758) from his own plantation, five tons of white or red wine, made of grapes, the produce of the colonies only, and such as in the opinion of competent judges appointed by the society in London, shall be deemed deserving the reward: not less than one ton thereof to be imported at London, 100 l."

A Comic Satire...by Rigdum Funidos..., 16pp., first edition, an excellent clean copy, disbound, uncut, 4to, A.Moore, 1759.⁂ Scarce satirical poem about the celebrated courtesan Kitty Fisher and her aristocratic clientele.Fisher (?1741-67) was just rising to public prominence in 1759, becoming associated with the most fashionable activities and prominent men in London. Horace Walpole mentions her being noticed by both the Prince of Wales (later George III) and his brother Prince Frederick William, Reynolds painted her four times (once as Cleopatra), and she formed the basis of the character Kitty Willis in Hannah Cowley's The Belle's Stratagem.ESTC cites only 2 UK copies (BL and National Library of Scotland) and 6 in America; Library Hub adds copies in the University of St.Andrews and Wellcome libraries.

The work includes 'Revenge upon Revenge: or, An Historical Narrative of the Tragical Practices of Sir John Eland, of Eland' with separate title.

Bell, 1770, together 2 works in 2 vol., lightly browned, some light marking, contemporary speckled calf, gilt spines in compartments, vol.1 lacking upper cover, vol.2 covers detached, spine ends chipped, corners worn, rubbed, 12mo⁂ Rare, with ESTC recording only three copies (BL and Nat. Lib. Scotland (2copies)). Bethune emigrated to North Carolina from Scotland in 1773. He fought for Loyalist forces in the Battle of Moore's Creek Bridge during the Revolutionary War, where he was captured by the rebels. When released he made his way to Montreal, Canada, where he was eventually to set up its first Presbyterian church.

Inscribed to Mrs. Eugenia Stanhope, editor of Lord Chesterfield's Letters, 2 vol., first edition, half-titles, contemporary ink signature of Thos. Foxcroft to head of titles and with his engraved book-label, vol.1 lacking final blank, light marginal browning, short cut to outer margin of final three leaves of vol.2, contemporary calf-backed marbled boards, vellum tips, a little rubbed, labels renewed, spines worn at head, 12mo, for G.Robinson, and J.Bew, 1776.⁂ Epistolary novel designed to illustrate the pernicious effects of Chesterfield's cynical precepts in the Letters to his Son. The Pupil of Pleasure, perhaps the first rejoinder in the form of fiction, posits a hero of "birth, rank, figure, and character" who is brought up on Lord Chesterfield. Philip Sedley "purchases the books, finds them agreeable to his palate, studies them paragraph by paragraph, thrives under his application, piques himself upon his progress, and ... sallies into the gay world, armed at all points, the Pupil of Pleasure". Unsurprisingly he comes to a bad end.

Collection of Prints, Books of Prints &c. the Properly of William Roscoe, Esq. which will be sold by auction by Mr. Winstanley, at his rooms in Marble Street, Liverpool, on Monday the 9th September, and ten following days, priced throughout in ink, title soiled, Liverpool, 1816, together 2 works in 1 vol., occasional spotting and staining, lightly browned, later half calf, spine repaired and with modern morocco label, corners little worn, rubbed, 8vo ⁂ William Roscoe (1753-1831) of Liverpool was a lawyer, abolitionist, botanist, author, art collector and bibliophile. In 1816 the Liverpool bank of which he was a partner was in financial difficulties and he was forced to sell his library and collection. It raised around £5150, with the major lot being a 14th century Italian illuminated manuscript Bible, bought by Robinson for £178 10s and subsequently sold to Coke of Holkham for 200 guineas. His art collection was intended to illustrate the rise and progress of the Arts and he was particularly interested in early Italian art or Primitives, being one of the first British collectors in this area.
