TRON(2) Japanese B2 (20" x 29")Very Fine Rolled Buena Vista, 1982This wonderful lot features the two styles used in Japan for the ground-breaking film. These stunning rolled Japanese posters offered here feature a great portrait of Jeff Bridges in the form of the defiant character of Tron, and the other immersing us in the video game battle. The English style has pinholes in the top two corners and some small scuffs in the character's right arm. All are supported with tape on the verso. With border wear as well. The cast style has pinholes in the upper corners. STAR WARS: A NEW HOPEOne Sheet (27" x 41"); NSS Style DMint Folded; Artwork by Charles White III & Drew Struzan 20th Century Fox, 1978This poster was printed in 1978 while Star Wars was still in continuous first release. The film stayed in theaters for a very long time, and Lucasfilm decided to revitalize its marketing with a new poster. In the book Star Wars Art: Posters, Drew Struzan discusses that "Charles White III was commissioned to create this new poster. Charlie had seen my work and decided to call me in as a collaborator. I painted the portraits while he painted the hardware. Lucasfilm liked the artwork, but there was not enough space left open for the "billing block." Necessity being the mother of invention, we decided to enlarge the dimensions of the art to increase the open space and give the work an early-twentieth-century, wild-posted [wilding] circus-style look. So it came about that it took the two of us to paint what would come to be known as the "Circus" poster for its throwback style." JAMES BOND: LIVE AND LET DIESix Sheet (77" x 78")Very Fine Folded; Artwork by Robert McGinnis United Artists, 1973The six sheet has some tanning along the folds and some separation on the right side. After Sean Connery retired from the role of superspy James Bond, the torch passed to Roger Moore, an actor known for his portrayal of wealthy adventurer and Robin Hood-like crusader Simon Templar in TV's The Saint, based on the novels by Leslie Charteris. Unlike Connery's brutal, gritty portrayal of 007, Moore's Bond was more dashing and urbane, with a wicked sense of humor to go with his license to kill. Some saw the change as catastrophic, fearing that the Bond franchise was veering into parody compared to the Connery classics. Still, for many, Moore defined the character through seven feature films between 1973 and 1985. The first of Moore's outings was the film, Live and Let Die (1973), set against a voodoo background in New Orleans and a distinctly urban environment in Harlem, and drawing more than a bit of inspiration from the spate of Blaxploitation films that were popular in the early 1970s.This lot will be auctioned on Thursday, April 18th. The most notable of which included a stint at the flourishing Glasgow School of Art in 1900-1906 and at his old school, the Académie des Beaux-Arts, from 1906-1937. The great respect of his students and his influence as a teacher there is evident, as a number of his British students followed him from Glasgow to Belgium in 1906, seeking further tutelage.Delville first exhibited with the group L'Essor in 1887, wherein his works were favourably reviewed in the contemporary press. Later he would co-found the group Pour l'Art in 1892 and initiate his own Salons d'Art Idéaliste in Brussels two years after that. He compiled a huge oeuvre, of which many were completed for the public sphere, however, during the onslaught in Europe of two world wars a great number of his works were lost or destroyed, adding to his auction rarity. The artist believed that his works should uplift the viewer and serve to benefit wider society, rather than be shielded and enjoyed by only the intellectual elite. He saw art as the expression of a higher spiritual truth and that it should be based on the principle of ideal, or spiritual, beauty. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Passeron, Daumier, Témoin de son temps, Fribourg, 1979, no. 168, p. 233 (illustrated p. 232).Honoré Daumier was not only a keen observer of the French legal system – he was also a reluctant participant. In 1832, he stood trial for a caricature drawing of King Louis-Philippe published in the left-wing satirist magazine La Caricature. Attacking corruption and licentiousness in the King's government, Daumier depicted him as Gargantua – the insatiable giant from François Rabelais's popular story – devouring citizen's tax money, in the form of barrels of coins carted up into his gaping maw. In a barbed follow-up, the magazine published an unflattering drawing by Daumier of the King's Chief Prosecutor, Jean-Charles Persil, in women's attire. Along with his editor, Daumier was sentenced to six months of confinement in the Sainte-Pélagie prison in Paris. This experience – and his many hours observing lawyers gathering around the Palais de Justice from his nearby apartment – aroused Daumier's artistic focus on the comedy and tragedy of urban life. With the zealous flourish of a playwright's son, Daumier focused his art on the theatrical, the legal system providing him with a cast of characters locked into a wider power struggle coloured by jargon, performance and narrative. With his trademark frankness and informality, Daumier staged artworks evoking the sins of greed, vanity, deception and sloth, playing out upon the stage of the Palais de Justice. Daumier's legal works often comprised genre-style vignettes depicting one or two figures who signified the justice system without being hampered by a specific narrative. As such, physical gestures and facial expressions were central to these scenes, as his characters encompassed personifications of a society beset by inequality. His lawyers are often depicted huddled, confiding and whispering, while their clients exhibit dumbfounded expressions, as they suffer unexpected outcomes delivered by a complex and mysterious system. This conceit of deceit plays out poignantly in the present work, as the lawyer - clutching his documents and seemingly at ease in his environment - turns toward his client, who displays an expression of horror. The deep blacks of the lawyer's costume are stark against the colourless ruffled garb of the defendant, evoking a binary between them of knowledge, class and power.Daumier produced thousands of satirical drawings for French periodicals that made biting and wryly humorous statements about French society, drawing upon close observation of Parisian folk as well as his vibrant imagination. This took place at a time of unprecedented growth in Paris, as the city's sprawling diversity and increasingly cosmopolitan outlook led to a demand for urban portraiture. The vitality of Daumier's linework conjured the action and emotion of these subjects with vigorous clarity. With few strokes of pencil, charcoal, chalk and ink, the resulting scenes appear unflinchingly spontaneous and yet deftly constructed. This quality led Charles Baudelaire to dub Daumier the 'Michelangelo of Caricature,' and later critics to credit him with emancipating drawing from the constraints of the prevailing French academic style, redefining it as a forthright and expressive mode of art. Influencing these shifts was the French Revolution's emphases on liberty and individualism, resulting in a greater focus on artistic autonomy, as well as a profound aversion to abuses of power. The present work thereby forms a core emanation of Daumier's resounding influence, leading to its inclusion in some of the most significant historical exhibitions on the artist. Of these, the 1901 retrospective at the Palais de École des Beaux-Arts was the largest exhibition of Daumier's works ever assembled, solidifying his posthumous fame as a draughtsman and painter, not just as a caricaturist. Following this, the exhibition Daumier et Gavarni at the Maison de Victor Hugo in 1923 was the first significant Daumier exhibition after World War I, while the 1934 retrospective at the Musée de l'Orangerie was arguably the most important Daumier exhibition ever held. In addition, the present work was included in the 1961 Daumier retrospective at the Tate Gallery in London, which was organised by leading Daumier expert K.E. Maison and became of critical importance to Daumier scholarship. For some decades the present work formed part of the collection of the artist Henri Rouart and his sons, alongside twelve paintings and thirty-three drawings by the artist – including several masterpieces. It comes to us now from a distinguished private London collection, alongside two other remarkable drawings that showcase Daumier's master as a draughtsman and as a vigorous critic of humankind. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

GIORGIO DE CHIRICO (1888-1978)Ponte di Rialto signed 'G. de Chirico' (centre); signed and inscribed 'questa 'Venezia' (Ponte di Rialto) è opera autentica da me eseguita e firmata Giorgio de Chirico.' and further signed and inscribed 'Venezia (Rialto) Giorgio de Chirico' (on the reverse)oil on canvas50.5 x 60cm (19 7/8 x 23 5/8in).Painted in 1956Footnotes:ProvenancePrivate collection, Milan (acquired by 1971).Galleria La Barcaccia, Rome.Anon. sale, Christie's, Milan, 23 November 1998, lot 280.Private collection, Rome.LiteratureC. Bruni Sakraischik, Catalogo Generale Giorgio de Chirico, Vol. I, Opere dal 1951 al 1970, Milan, 1971, no. 49 (illustrated). An enigmatic maverick in the history of modern art, Giorgio de Chirico forged a unique and long career. Hailed as the master of Metaphysical art, in the 1950s he departed from the elusive imagery that defined his early career and created his most celebrated depictions of Venice as part of his 'late Baroque phase'. These works which are rooted in realism as opposed to the imagination, stand out within his oeuvre, and derive from his desire to reconnect with the history of Venice and the dignity of the old masters which shaped the city's cultural legacy. Beyond the metaphysical elements of much of his corpus, the present work places his brand of genius in close conversation with his forefathers and is an affirmation that he too belonged to the lineage of the great Italian masters.Born in Greece to Italian parents, de Chirico was surrounded by classical mythology, art, history, and architecture during his childhood. He first visited Venice in 1905 and throughout his career exhibited his paintings at the Venice Biennale. These sojourns provided ample opportunity for de Chirico to paint the sites, study the architecture, and to immerse himself amongst the masterpieces that fill the ancient city. For de Chirico, Venice served as an open-air studio from which he could draw endless inspiration.Executed in 1956, Ponte di Rialto is testament to the artist's mastery of paint and use of colour. From its fine architectural lines to the palpable texture of the water and the clouds, the work strikes a wonderfully balanced tone with its compositional symmetry. With the iconic Ponte di Rialto commanding the centre of the scene, the calm canal widens into the foreground as three gondolas glide across the surface, exuding a sense of serenity. The detailed facades of the architecture capture the sunlight, while dramatic shadows are cast into the water. The harmonious colour palette - comprising blues, greens, ochres, and pinks - is skilfully brought together by the bold red banner hanging from the keystone, proudly presenting the artist's signature to the viewer.Ponte di Rialto reveals a central desire of the artist held throughout his career, as described by Stephen McKenna: 'de Chirico saw himself as a man with a mission to fill (...): the preservation, or rather restoration, of the dignity of painting, the reestablishment of a respect and love for the Old Masters and the values they represent' (S. McKenna, Late de Chirico 1940-76, exh. cat., Bristol, 1985, pp. 11-12). De Chirico's relationship with Venice is comparable to Monet's relationship with Giverny – it was his own artistic playground, enabling him to develop his ideas and techniques. Moreover, his depictions of the city's canals, piazzas, and churches placed him in dialogue with the great Italian painters such as Titian, Tintoretto and Canaletto. Paying homage to the tradition of rendering the city's deep colours, teal canals and neoclassical facades, de Chirico also found Venice to be the ideal environment in which to hone his artistic skill and experiment with colour. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: * AR* VAT on imported items at a preferential rate of 5% on Hammer Price and the prevailing rate on Buyer's Premium.AR Goods subject to Artists Resale Right Additional Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

HENRI LEBASQUE (1865-1937)La lecture au jardin signed 'Lebasque.' (lower right)oil on paper laid down on canvas63 x 48cm (24 13/16 x 18 7/8in).Painted circa 1918Footnotes:The authenticity of this work has been confirmed by Maria de la Ville Fromoit and Christine Lenoir.ProvenancePrivate collection, Europe (acquired by the early 1950s). Private collection, Belgium (by descent from the above).Exhibited(Probably) Paris, Musée Galliera, Exposition rétrospective, Henri Lebasque, 1865-1937, 16 June – 9 July 1952, no. 52.Bonhams is honoured to present the following selection of works from a distinguished family collection. This impressive group, carefully assembled over decades, is testament to a deep appreciation for Modern masters. Including works by Henri Lebasque, Bernard Buffet, Kees van Dongen, Armand Guillaumin, Jean Dufy and Jean Lurçat, this ensemble showcases a keen and discerning eye for high quality works of Impressionist & Modern Art.Leading this group are three important works by Henri Lebasque - Les Andelys, La lecture au jardin and La Marne à Pomponne. While depicting different subjects, each is executed in a similarly delicate palette of blues and greens. This chromatic range of cool tones imbues each work with a charming softness, which was quintessential to Lebasque's painterly style. A soft luminosity thereby pervades each canvas, perfectly evoking the poetic gentleness that is to be found in the artist's most sought-after works. In 1905, Lebasque exhibited at the Salon d'Automne, where he first met the Fauvists and was fascinated by their masterful use of pure and vivid colours. Although he learned from their visual language, he remained faithful to his own vision of calm and light, choosing not to follow their flamboyant palettes and intense contrasts. These three scenes - suffused with a gentle light, where harmony reigns - demonstrate Lebasque's artistic pursuit as a lyrical and intimate painter. Also included in this group is an early landscape by Kees van Dongen, an example of which rarely comes to market. Executed in Holland circa 1895, before his move to Paris, Derrière la ferme conveys the artist's focus on evoking the atmosphere of a place, skilfully imbuing the rural quietude of the Holland countryside. Painted with earthy toned-down colours, van Dongen's early work reflects the influence of the Dutch master Rembrandt before he became one of the pioneers of the radical movement of Fauvism. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: ** VAT on imported items at a preferential rate of 5% on Hammer Price and the prevailing rate on Buyer's Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
