* SIR ROBIN PHILIPSON RA PRSA FRSA RSW RGI (SCOTTISH 1916 - 1992), GLADIOLI ON A TABLE oil on canvas, signedframedimage size 76cm x 102cm, overall size 101cm x 207cmExhibition label verso: The Carnegie Dunfermline Trust Exhibition, Robin Philipson: Paintings, the label dated April 1970Note: Born in Cumbria in 1916, Philipson moved to Scotland with his family when he was fourteen. After training at Edinburgh College of Art, during World War II Philipson served with the King's Own Scottish Borderers in India and Burma, and while unable to paint as much as he would wish under war time conditions, in later life would return to the exotic motifs such as Brahma cattle and Burmese horses first encountered during active service. Following the war, Philipson joined the teaching staff at Edinburgh College of Art in 1947 and taught until his retirement in 1982. His early works were mainly landscapes, still lifes and interiors, but by the 1950s, he had become interested in the work of the American Abstract Expressionists. His works were was strongly influenced by his fellow members of the Edinburgh School, such as Gillies and Maxwell, as well as the works of Kokoschka. This is evident in his energetic brushwork and use of rich, jewel-like colour. His diverse subjects included cathedral interiors, soldiers, wild animals, poppies, and most notably cock fighting. Philipson was a highly influential figure within the Scottish and English art worlds and received many honours throughout his life. He was elected an Honorary Royal Academician and was knighted in 1976 for his services to the arts in Scotland. He served as the President of the Royal Scottish Academy from 1973 to 1983. * DAVID COOK (SCOTTISH b. 1957), MINT TEA oil on canvas, signed, titled versoframedimage size 60cm x 95cm, overall size 76cm x 110cm Note: David Cook was born in 1957 in Dunfermline and attended Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art in Dundee from 1979-84. He was recognised early as an exceptional talent, winning the first prize at the annual student show at the Royal Scottish Academy in 1983. He then won a travel award which took him to Paris, Amsterdam, Belgium and Cyprus. He won the Guthrie Award at the RSA in 1985 and was given Scottish Arts Council Awards in 1985, 1988 and 1989. He has exhibited irregularly but notably at The Traverse Theatre in 1982 and with the 369 Gallery throughout the following decade. In the 1990s he was already visiting "Seagreens" (his current home) and staying at a cottage at Benholm, two miles to the North also frequented by Alberto Morocco and Ian Eadie. Cook travelled regularly in these years to Turkey, the Balearics and significantly, at the invitation of the Everard Reed Gallery, to Southern Africa for three months in 1997. He was able to secure the tenancy at Seagreens shortly after his return and eventually bought it in 2004. Joan Eardley worked at Catterline, just eleven miles to the north of Seagreens and like Eardley sixty years earlier, David Cook feels the emotional draw of the sea and the wildness of the coastal environment. This sense of belonging is now deeply embedded; he can see the seasons change and paint the whole calendar; the daffodils of Spring, wild flowers of Summer, the Autumn skies and bleak drama of Winter are all on show: immediate, raw and compelling. David Cook is represented by The Scottish Gallery (Edinburgh) and his most recent solo show there was "Forged by the Sea" 29th June - 22nd July 2023. His known public collections include: The City of Edinburgh Council, Dundee Art Gallery & Museums, Dunfermline District Museum, Glasgow Museums & Galleries, The Hunterian, Kirkcaldy Museum & Gallery, Knysna Fine Art (South Africa), The Scottish Arts Council, University of Dundee, University of Warwick, Art in Healthcare and in corporate collections in the UK. Recent prices for David Cook's paintings in our auctions in 2024 include sales of £480, £550 and £800.

In 1998, Vettriano moved to London where he continued to have sell-out shows including, ‘Between Darkness and Dawn’, ‘Lovers and Other Strangers’ and ‘Affairs of the Heart’. The year 2004 was exceptional in Vettriano’s career; his best-known painting, ‘The Singing Butler’ was sold at Sotheby’s for close to £750,000; he was awarded an OBE for Services to the Visual Arts and was the subject of a Southbank show documentary, entitled ‘Jack Vettriano: The People’s Painter’; Pavilion published a book ‘Lovers and Other Strangers’ being an anthology of his work to date with text by Anthony Quinn. In 2008, Vettriano was commissioned to paint portraits of Sir Jackie Stewart and Zara Phillips, the latter was part of a charity fundraising project for Sport Relief, the experience of which was captured in a documentary broadcast on BBC One in March 2008. * ALLY THOMPSON (SCOTTISH 1955 - 2016), FROM BEYOND THE TORRENTS OF THE NIGHT, A CHIMERA mixed media on board, signed, titled and dated 1996 versoframed and under glassimage size 134cm x 56cm, overall size 150cm x 73cm Note: Ally (Alasdair Neil Renwick) Thompson, was a Scottish painter of the New Glasgow Boys generation alongside Peter Howson, Ken Currie, Adrian Wisniewski and the late Steven Campbell. Born in Glasgow, he studied at Glasgow School of Art from 1975 to 1980, gaining a B.A. First Class Honours in Fine Art, and a diploma in postgraduate studies with high commendation and a travelling scholarship. In 1989, a solo exhibition of his work at the Barbizon Gallery (Glasgow) was visited by the international art promoter Norbert Binotti, who then brought Thompson to international prominence with a one-man show in New York and major exhibitions in Paris. Ally lived and worked periodically in Provence in the 1990s. He subsequently steadily consolidated his international reputation with exhibitions in Britain, Europe and North America, appearing in galleries such as Flowers East in London and Gallery Albert 1er in Paris. A close friend of Peter Howson, with whom he was a fellow student at the Glasgow School of Art, both men and their work were almost equally unknown when they shared one of their first exhibitions, a two-man show at the Art School itself in 1984. Ally Thompson was naturally shy in new company rather than a bold and forthright salesman of his own work. He painted in several distinctly different styles, from surrealist to abstract to expressionist landscape and much in between, making him hard to categorise and package for promoters and critics. Visiting his studio in the early 1980s Alec Mather, a successful Lanarkshire businessman, was one of the first of several almost surrogate father figures in Thompson's life. He offered to pay Ally twice what he was asking for one his paintings on condition that the young artist gave up his day job as a school teacher. Thompson never looked back creatively. Alec Mather remained a friend, patron and supporter for the rest of the artist's life. Outside of Scotland, through the friendship and support of Norbert Binotti and (after his untimely death) Norbert's brother Claude, Thompson found an invigorating new audience for his work in New York, Paris and the South of France. For all his non-materialist philosophy, Thompson was not above a bit of name-dropping on occasion, and like any Glaswegian boy Ally was suitably astonished to sometimes find himself in the company (and painting collections of) the likes of Bob Geldof, Petula Clark, Richard Jobson, Picasso's son Claude and even France's President Mitterand.

He explored a diverse range of activities, however, before returning to painting from 1949 to 1953 he earned his living by making jewellery and in 1947 he worked as a jazz musician, an activity he continued in later life. He wrote poetry during the early 1940s. From 1953 to 1956 Davie taught in London at the Central School of Arts and Crafts, where he became interested in African and Pacific art. As early as 1958 Davie emphasised the importance in his work of intuition, as expressed in the form of enigmatic signs. During the 1960s, both in paintings and in coloured lithographs, he represented such images with increasing clarity at the expense of gestural handling. In 1971 he made his first visit to the island of St Lucia, where he began to spend half of each year and which brought Caribbean influences to bear on his suggestive imagery, as in Bird Gong No. 10, Opus 730 (1973; London, Brit. Council). Taking on the role of a disinherited shaman, Davie created a synthesis of mythologies from a variety of cultures for a modern civilisation devoid of its own village myths.

I studied their forms.” Born on October 16, 1925 in Erlangen, Germany, he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Nuremberg where he was a student of the painter Hermann Wilheims. In 1957, he won a scholarship to study in Paris where he was introduced for the first time to abstract art, leading to his own experimentation with non-representational forms in his work. He was awarded the Culture Prize of the City of Erlangen in 1983, the first of several national accolades, including the Friedrich Baur Prize of the Bavarian Academy of Fine Arts in 1994. In 2002, he established a foundation to preserve his work for the public. * JOHN BYRNE RSA (SCOTTISH 1940 - 2023), FACE TO FACE mixed media on paper, initialledmounted, framed and under glassimage size 29cm x 20cm, overall size 51cm x 40cm Note: John Byrne studied at both Edinburgh and Glasgow Schools of Art in the late 50s and early 60s. A superb painter and draughtsman, the multi-talented Byrne was also a first-class playwright (‘The Slab Boys’, ‘Tutti Frutti’), his ear for dialogue was as acute (and witty) as his eye for detail. Much of his subject matter in both disciplines is overtly autobiographical, he often included or refers to the Teddy Boy/Rock and Roll era of his youth. Byrne designed record covers for Donovan, The Beatles, Gerry Rafferty and Billy Connolly. His work is held in major collections in Scotland and abroad. Several of his paintings hang in The Scottish National Portrait Gallery in Edinburgh, the Museum of Modern Art and the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum in Glasgow.

* DAVID BOMBERG (BRITISH 1890 - 1957), PORTRAIT OF A GENTLEMAN oil on canvas, signed and dated '42framedimage size 60cm x 49cm, overall size 80cm x 69cm Provenance: Arthur A. Stambois, Private Collection Stanley Mann, Private Collection (purchased from the above in 1961) By descent to his wife, Eithne Maureen Mann (nee Milne), Private Scottish Collection.Note 1: One of the most important and influential British artists at work in the twentieth century, David Bomberg was born in Birmingham in 1890. Initially studying art in London at the City and Guilds, David Bomberg was to study under the highly respected Walter Sickert at the Westminster School of Art, subsequently gaining a place at the Slade School of Art. It was here that David studied under the famous Henry Tonks, alongside such soon-to-be-famous names as Stanley Spencer, Ben Nicholson and Paul Nash. The Slade was hugely important in the development of David’s work, but that didn’t prevent him from expulsion in the summer of 1913. Flirting, rather acrimoniously, with the Bloomsbury Group, David was to eventually form ties with the Camden Town Group, subsequently becoming a founding contributor to the London Group in 1914. After returning from active service in the First World War, David Bomberg took on a number of teaching positions, no less notable than his leading role in the Borough Group, where he was to teach and become a driving influence of a young Frank Auerbach. What followed was to become recognised as David’s “golden era” of work. Spells living abroad in Spain were to inspire some of his most well regarded works. David died in Spain in 1957, leaving a body of work and influence that is as relevant today as it was then. Following his death, David’s reputation continued to grow, with many retrospective exhibitions held, including at the Tate in 1988. David Bomberg is rightfully regarded as one of the leading lights of the twentieth century Modern British art world, and arguably one with the greatest influence on generations of artists to follow.Note 2: The face in the “Portrait of a Gentleman”, is unknown but shows a warmer in colour and sense of energy. The handkerchief thrusts out of his pocket with a sense of purpose or perhaps importance. The pale pigment applied so freely around his head adds to this feeling, and there may even be a hint of a smile in the curve of his lips. Perhaps he is sharing a joke with Bomberg, but the light heartedness ultimately seems fleeting. Bomberg was appointed Official war artist during the second world war and only completed one commission “”Underground Bomb Store 1942”, given that this portrait was completed in the same year there could be a connection to the artist in this role.

* JACK VETTRIANO (SCOTTISH b. 1951), WORDS OF WISDOM limited edition silkscreen print on paper, signed and numbered 21/295, from the Affairs of The Heart Collection, 2004mounted, framed and under glassimage size 46cm x 40cm, overall size 89cm x 78cm Note: Jack Vettriano was born in Fife, Scotland in 1951. After leaving school at 15, he followed his father down the mine, working as an apprentice engineer. He later moved on to white-collar jobs in management services. Vettriano took up painting as a hobby in the 1970s when a girlfriend bought him a set of watercolours for his birthday and from then on, he spent much of his spare time teaching himself to paint. He learned his craft by copying Old Masters, Impressionists, Surrealists and a plethora of Scottish artists. Prior to moving from Kirkcaldy to Edinburgh, he decided to mark a break with his past work which hitherto had been sold under his family name Hoggan. From this time on, he adopted his mother’s maiden name. The turning point came in 1988 when he submitted two paintings to the Royal Scottish Academy’s Annual Exhibition; both were sold on the first day and Vettriano was approached by several galleries. He held his first solo exhibition at the Edinburgh Gallery in 1992 entitled ‘Tales of Love and Other Stories’ and later that year, he exhibited at the Mall Galleries in London. He was represented by Portland Gallery from 1994-2007 and during this time, he had many sell-out solo exhibitions in Edinburgh, London, Hong Kong and New York and counts Jack Nicholson, Sir Alex Fergusson and Sir Tim Rice amongst his collectors. In 1996, Pavilion books commissioned W. Gordon Smith to compile an anthology, ‘Fallen Angels’, in which over 40 Vettriano images were accompanied by a selection of Scottish writing. Poets, playwrights, novelists and actors were asked for a personal response to an individual painting or poem. In the same year, Sir Terrance Conran commissioned Vettriano to create a series of paintings for Conran’s Bluebird Club in London. The seven paintings inspired by the life of Sir Malcom Campbell hung there for ten years. Vettriano launched Heartbreak publishing and his own gallery also called Heartbreak in 2009. In the same year, he was commissioned by the Yacht Club of Monaco to create a series of paintings to mark the centenary of their world-famous yacht Tuiga. The subsequent exhibition ‘A Hommage a Tuiga’ premiered in Monaco as part of Classic Yacht Week. In 2010, an exhibition of over 40 new paintings, ‘Days of Wine and Roses’ was opened at the Kirkcaldy Museum and Art Gallery in Fife. The exhibition then moved to London, opening at Heartbreak in September 2010. In September 2013, a major exhibition, ‘Jack Vettriano: A Retrospective’ opened at Glasgow’s Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum. It featured over 100 works and ran until February 23 2014. It attracted 123,300 visitors and broke the attendance records held by a Van Gogh exhibition in 1948. Vettriano sold his gallery in London in 2015 and later that year established his own publishing company: Jack Vettriano Publishing. Limited. In 2017, He was one of three artists commissioned to paint portraits of Scottish comedian Billy Connolly. These were then put on display in Glasgow People’s Palace, while images were transferred to murals in the centre of Glasgow. It was the subject of a BBC documentary first broadcast on June 14, 2017.

* ENZO PLAZZOTTA (ITALIAN 1921 - 1981), SPIRIT OF FREEDOM bronze sculpture with rich brown patina, stamped with the Plazzotta seal and numbered 34 inscribed title to plaque, on marble base 33cm high Provenance: Enzo Plazzotta Catalogue Raisonne No 329 illustrated page 171.Note: Enzo Plazzotta was born in Mestre, near Venice, in 1921 and spent his student days in Milan studying sculptural drawing and modelling under Giocomo Manzu at the Academia di Brera, and architecture at the Politecnicao. He decided to specialise in sculpture, but his studies were interrupted by World War ll. Plazzotta became a member of the Italian Resistance Movement and fought in the Ossola region as a partisan. He was captured as a result of a secret political meeting held in Milan and spent nearly a year in solitary confinement. While being transferred to a German prisoner of war camp, however, he managed to escape and rejoin the partisans. Plazzotta was engaged in guerrilla activities and in conjunction with the British Special Forces was on the organising end of a clandestine escape route for Jews and escaped Allied prisoners of war en route from Italy to Switzerland. Through these contacts with British Intelligence he was involved in the repatriation of Ferruccio Parri, the leader of the Italian Resistance, from Switzerland to Italy. Parri later became Italy's first prime minister after the war ended. Plazzotta's wartime record won him the Silver Medal for Military Valour. After the war, Plazzotta resumed his studies in Milan, and in 1947 received his first commission, appropriately enough from the Italian Committee of Liberation. This was to be their tribute to their successful wartime collaboration with the British Special Forces. The bronze sculpture was entitled Spirit of Rebellion and depicted the boy David with the head of Goliath. Plazzotta himself was chosen to make the presentation to the Special Forces Club headquarters in London, and the bronze still has a place of honour there today. This first visit to London played a major part in shaping Plazzotta's career, for he quickly decided to make London his permanent place of residence. From his first studio in London he received several portrait commissions and, in 1949, held his first exhibition at the former Brook Street Gallery, to be followed by many others. "Spirit of Freedom" was also commissioned by The Special Forces Club (London) as confirmed in the Catalogue Raisonne. One of his first public commissions was a monument to commemorate the 700th anniversary of the Battle of Lewes, and after this time he began to explore the themes for which he has become well known, specialising in studies of dance, the horse and the female form – all of which exude vitality and movement. His style, based on the classical lines of the Renaissance, reflects perfectly his own admiration for such great masters as Michelangelo and Rodin. He lived in Chelsea and worked from the studio formerly owned by the late Sir Charles Wheeler. Major public sculptures by Enzo Plazzotta include: Camargue Horses, on the Waterside Terrace at The Barbican Centre, London; The Cruxifixion, in the College Gardens of Westminster Abbey; Homage to Leonardo. Belgrave Square, London; Jeté, on the corner of 46 -57 Millbank, Westminster, London; The Hand of Christ, Dinand Library at the College of the Holy Cross, Worcester, Massachusetts, USA; The Helmet, Lewes Priory; Two Brothers, Boys Town, Nebraska, USA; Young Dancer, Royal Opera House, Broad Street, London. The estate of Enzo Plazzotta is handled by Chris Beetles Gallery (London) and their website at the time of writing shows "Spirit of Freedom" priced at £2750.

* DAVID COOK (SCOTTISH b. 1957), CACTUS & BIRDCAGE oil on board, signed, titled versoframedimage size 60cm x 70cm, overall size 73cm x 83cm Note: David Cook was born in 1957 in Dunfermline and attended Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art in Dundee from 1979-84.

* PAM CARTER DA PAI (SCOTTISH 1952 - 2022), ROCKS oil on canvas, signed, titled label versoframed and under glassimage size 64cm x 64cm, overall size 83cm x 83cmNote: Pam Carter was born in Tanganyika, East Africa to an Austrian mother and Scottish father. At the age of thirteen, she came to Scotland where she schooled at Bearsden Academy. She graduated from Glasgow School of Art in the seventies. "My main inspiration as an artist is in the Scottish landscape and seascape. I enjoy using colour to define contours, structure and changing light sequences. I search out specific viewpoints. I am equally inspired by the rugged isolation of the Western Isles and the dramatic viewpoints of the Eastern coastline. I work predominantly in oil". Pam Carter was unquestionably one of Scotland's most popular and successful contemporary artists. She won numerous awards and prizes, always received significant media attention, has been the subject of many magazine features and had several tv appearances. Her work is widely exhibited but rarely appears at auction. However, in The Scottish Contemporary Art Auction of 17th April 2022 lot 38 "Luskentyre Reflections" a 46 x 51cm oil by Pam Carter sold for £2000 (hammer) and in The Scottish Contemporary Art Auction of 10th July 2022 lot 230 "Gables Geary" sold for £2600 (hammer). Most recently "West Coast Sunset" (lot 47, The Scottish Contemporary Art Auctio of 24th October 2024) a 61 x 61cm oil on canvas by Pam Carter sold for £3600 (hammer).Comment: Pam was a special artist and one who enjoyed wide popularity and substantial commercial success. In all our dealings with Pam over the years, she was always generous with her time and quick to provide the background to paintings we had received from private consignors and filling in gaps about locations, dates etc. Pam's work is instantly recognisable and she had that rare gift, even among the best artists, of being able to use the minimum of brushwork to create the maximum visual effect. Her "lines" were those of the natural environment but she knew exactly how to "see" them and portray them on canvas. Despite her commercial success, or perhaps even because of it, Pam's work probably hasn't yet reached the full audience that it so richly deserves. She exhibited frequently at numerous galleries in Scotland and gallery owners were inevitably in a queue to secure her work. Typically, Pam showed loyalty to those who were the first to support her when she was a relative unknown. Talented artists always wish to be remembered by their work and Pam Carter can be certain of that, but she'll also be remembered with great affection by all those who had the good fortune to meet her or know her.
