RARE WWII BRITISH PRISONER OF WAR CARVED CHESS SET,made by 2885260 Cpl. Andrew Howie Haldane of the First Battalion London Scottish (Gordon Highlanders) when held as a PoW by the Germans in Stalag 7A (Moosburg - Isar), comprising a full set of black and white pieces (the black effect achieved by scorching one set on an open flame), the white pawns modelled as children representing various sports, the black pawns modelled as Snow White and the seven dwarfs, height of the King 10.2cm, accompanied by paperwork detailing the history and provenance of the set.Footnote: Cpl. Haldane was posted missing on the 4th February 1944 presumably following the landing of the 1st London Scottish at Anzio where they participated in a counter-attack in the ongoing operation against the German forces; the attack was not successful amidst adverse weather conditions and the London Scottish endured 120 men either killed, wounded or missing, one of the latter being Cpl. Haldane, with a notice dated 11th April 1944 eventually confirming that he was being held as a PoW at Stalag 7A (confirmed in the National Archives at Kew). According to the associated history and research Cpl. Haldane managed to carve this set with a small pen knife and section of wood from his bedframe. Stalag 7A was liberted by US forces 29th April 1945 with Cpl. Haldane being officially discharged 19th April 1946, having brought this chess set home with him, eventually passing to his wife and from her to the current owner.Images of case and piece bases now available; condition is good, some small nicks and general wear but overall well preserved and taken care of
TWO MAPS OF LAKES, PETER CROSTHWAITE, late 18th century, comprising Lake Derwent and Buttermere, Crimmock & Lowes-Water Lakes, both later hand coloured, mounted, framed and under glass, the larger 40.5cm x 73cm overall (2)Note: Crosthwaite '...is considered the founding Father of tourism in Keswick, though those are not the limits to his accomplishments. He was a sailor in the East India Company, an inventor, explorer, surveyor, a husband, a father, customs officer, hydrologist, geographer, cartographer, museum owner and admiral in the Keswick regattas. His revolutionary mindset was the first to recognise and utilises the growing tourist trade in Keswick. Peter Crosthwaite was the definition of a polymath, with a plethora of interests and an insatiable curiosity. He was considered a controversial and eccentric character, though in his eulogy there was nothing but kind things to said about him; it was well known that he and Thomas Hutton had an intense rivalry, due to their museums and their work as guides being in competition. Despite their rivalry, the towns people and visitors enjoyed both museums, though Crosthwaite was the only one with Musical Stones.'
Everywhere You Go You can be sure of Shell - Vintage advertising poster, The Liffey Dublin, artwork by HC O'Donnell, folded, 30 x 40 inches. This series featured fine landmarks, historical sights and inspiring landscapes, all firmly located in the countryside. It was an idealized view of a rural order much sought after by the middle classes, particularly those from large towns. By celebrating and making accessible such rural delights, Shell won the plaudits of powerful pressure groups who sought to protect the countryside from urban expansion and the destruction of rural amenities by advertising hoardings. The first exhibition of these Shell posters took place at the New Burlington Galleries in June 1931.

Sir Peter Lely and Studio, portrait of James Butler the 1st Duke of Ormonde, three quarter length in Garter, oil on canvas, 133.5cms x 107cmsProvenance: Lot 49 in The Thynne Heirloom auction at Christies on the 1st of May 1911 where it fetched £42.00 and was sold to Robson. The painting bears a plaque inscribed Thynne Heirloom. Catalogue Note: James Butler, first Duke of Ormonde, Lord Lieutenant of Ireland, was born at Clerkenwell, Middlesex to Thomas Butler, Viscount Thurles (c. 1596–1619), son and heir of Walter Butler, eleventh Earl of Ormond, and Elizabeth Poyntz (c. 1588–1673) from Iron Acton, Gloucestershire. The Butlers were one of the principal families of Anglo-Norman settlers to survive in Ireland from the middle ages, but the first Duke of Ormonde broke with the Catholicism of his forebears to become one of the most significant statesmen and soldiers in the service of King Charles I in his campaign against the Irish uprising that preceded the English Civil War. Ormonde remained loyal to the Stuarts throughout his life despite falling in and out of favour. Following the execution of Charles I, he lived in exile from 1647–60, upon his return he received the English earldom of Brecknock, meaning he could sit in the English House of Lords, as well as the subsidiary title of Baron Butler of Llanthony. More momentous, however, was his elevation to the Irish dukedom of Ormonde in 1661. A unique distinction, it confirmed his standing as Charles's foremost subject in that kingdom. Until his death in 1688, the Duke of Ormonde held various different senior offices in the court of Charles II, was often consulted on Irish matters and ultimately gained a reputation for being loyal, uncompromising and highly principled.

SWAROVSKI. Austria, late 20th century."Flamingo" and "Grey Heron".Two figures in faceted Swarovski crystal in various shades.Signed on the reverse of the base.Provenance: Private collection, Spain between 1970-1990.Measurements: 15.5 x 5 x 9 cm (flamingo); 15 x 4.5 x 7 cm (heron). The Austrian firm Swarovski is dedicated to the creation of products made from crystal, a wide range that includes sculptures, crystal miniatures for jewellery and haute couture, interior decoration, candlesticks and 'rhinestones' (a type of diamond-like stone) for manufacturers and artists. The company was founded by Daniel Swarovski (1862-1956), who in 1892 invented a revolutionary machine that allowed crystal to be cut with greater precision than that obtained by hand-cutting. Three years later he set up his own factory in Wattens (Tyrol), and in 1931 he launched the first line of bows with small cut crystals sewn into them, thus entering the fashion accessories market. In 1956, shortly before his death, Swarovski, together with Christian Dior, developed the "Aurora Borealis" effect, a shimmering finish that enhances the brilliance of the cut crystal.
Icon. Russia, first half of the 19th century."Pantocrator".Tempera on panel, silver, gilt silver, precious stones and velvet.Deterioration on the velvet. The Oklad is attached to the wooden base.Measurements: 37 x 27 cm.Ancient icon "of Christ Pantocrator", which represents Jesus half-length, in the frontal and hieratic face with expressive intensity. Christ in his left hand should be holding the open book of the Gospel, as the hand indicates, facing the congregation, and with his right hand, according to the orthodox / Byzantine rite, blessing with the open palm and the articulation of the thumb and ring finger. This type of icon expresses the ineffable reality of God made Man.The interest of this icon lies largely in the oklad, the gilded silver plate with precious stones that covers part of its surface. The tradition of decorating icons with oklad appears after the mandate of the Most Holy Ruling Synod of 1722, when it was forbidden to hang metal crosses on icons and to leave offerings in the form of coins, as this tradition had pagan roots.
JEAN BAPTISTE FROMAGEAU (France, 1743-1793).Louis XV commode, third quarter of the 18th century.Rosewood and marquetry of bois de violette. Bronze handles and ornaments. Grey Sainte Anne marble top.Stamped on the two corners (under the envelope).Measurements: 88 x 126 x 63 cm.French Louis XV tumbeau commode made by the popular cabinetmaker Jean Baptiste Fromageau, active in Paris between 1755 and 1777. This piece of furniture dates from the last quarter of the 18th century and is almost entirely rococo, although the geometric veneering, appropriate to the structure, indicates a move towards the neoclassical language. The structure, with its bulging elevation, undulating profiles and sinuously cut chamfered corners, is still clearly rococo, as are the applied bronzes. These are mainly soft vegetal forms, clearly rococo, which even maintain the asymmetry typical of the first stage of this language, as can be seen in the front skirt or in the keyhole escutcheons. However, the tendency towards symmetry that marks the advance towards neoclassicism can already be seen in the handles, still worked with the naturalism of rococo, and the bronzes of the corners. The piece is made of bois de violette, an exotic wood used for veneering and marquetry, which was very popular in the 18th century. This wood, which belongs to the rosewood family, is mottled with purple and white highlights. It is a chest of drawers with three drawers, with two drawers in the lower ones and two in the upper one, although the decoration simulates the same structure as in the lower two drawers. Thus, we can see a false coat-of-arms in the centre, given that the real ones are the ones behind the handles of the two drawers. This symmetry, together with the geometric compartmentalisation, are clearly neoclassical elements. The son of a master carpenter, Jean Baptiste Fromageau set up his workshop in the rue Traversière before moving to the rue du Faubourg Saint-Antoine, where he made his workshop one of the most important in Paris. His abundant production was very varied, and he specialised in luxury cabinetmaking and simple carpentry. He ceased his activity in 1777. He then retired for a time to Versailles before returning to Paris where, in 1781, he directed the Hôtel de Russie. Today Fromageau's works can be found in international museums, such as the Museum für Kunsthandwerk in Frankfurt.
Pair of vases; Napoleon III period, last third of the 19th century.Gilt bronze and onyx d'Algérie.Measuremets: 66 x 28 x 28 cm.Pair of urns that presents an ovoid recipient made of white onyx, which has some brownish streaks that give a totally expressive character to the piece. The rest of the ornamental elements that make up both vessels are made of gilded bronze, cast in relief and with cold-chiselled details. They consist of a typically Empire base, prismatic, sharp-edged and smooth, on which the foot is placed directly, consisting of a bronze base with decorative vegetal elements, worked in the synthetic and refined style typical of the period. The bronze ornamentation is particularly notable for the quality of the chiselling, which reproduces the aesthetics of filigree work with great expressiveness. The ovoid shape of the body is surmounted by a long neck that forms the junction with the vessel, which is ovoid in the orientalist style. The side knockers next to the mouth are also noteworthy, as they take the anthropomorphic form of a dragon's head.Orientalism was born in the 19th century as a consequence of the romantic spirit of flight in time and space. The first Orientalists sought to reflect the lost, the unattainable, in a dramatic journey destined from the outset to fail, and for this reason they adopted aesthetic forms based on an idealised vision of Orientalist culture.
SUSY GÓMEZ (Pollença, Mallorca, 1965)."The world for an instant...".CAM publisher, 2004.Bronze sculpture.Signed with initials.Size: 6 x 40 x 10 cm.Susy Gómez studied at the Faculty of Fine Arts in Barcelona and, after completing her training, held her first solo exhibition at the Norai gallery in her home town in 1987. Six years later, in 1993, her solo exhibition at the Miró Foundation in Barcelona caused great expectation. His work is characterised by great technical versatility, encompassing painting, photography, sculpture, drawing, video and installation. In 1995 she took part in the ARCO fair, achieving a success that led her to be included in important national and international group exhibitions, such as the Salón de los 16 of the same year. Since then she has held numerous personal exhibitions, both in Spanish cities and in Turin, Athens and Nice, where she showed her work at the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art. In 1999 he was awarded the Endesa Scholarship, and the following year the IVAM's Centre del Carmen dedicated its first retrospective to him. In his work we can find various proposals, which continue the tradition of post-minimalism, and which at the same time are linked to the most current aesthetics.
RENÉ LALIQUE (Ay, France, 1860- Paris, 1945)."Vase no. 3. France, ca. 1925.Art Deco tabletop centrepiece of circular form in acid-etched moulded glass with vegetal decorations and borders.Signed R. Lalique in the central area.Work reproduced in "Le Catalogue Raisonné del L'Ouvre en Verre de R. Lalique", by Felix Marcilhac, Les Editions de l'Amateur , Pag. 702, nº. 3020 with photo.Procedure: Private Collection, Spain between 1970-1990.Measurements: 2.5 cm (height); 23.5 cm (diameter). The firm Lalique was originally founded by René Jules Lalique (1860 - 1945), one of the most prominent glassmakers of the time, and one of the first to sculpt glass for large monumental works, such as the fountains on the Champs Elysées. He enjoyed great renown for his original creations of jewellery, perfume bottles, glasses, plates, etc., in the Art Nouveau and Art Deco styles. He trained with the Parisian jeweller Louis Aucoq, and then continued his studies at Sudenham Art College in London. The excellence of his creations and the taste he applied to his work earned him important commissions for the interior decoration of ships, trains such as the Orient Express, churches such as Saint-Nicasius in Reims, and numerous religious and civil goldsmiths' works. Lalique was not content with simply designing his models, but also founded a factory to produce them in large quantities, patenting several innovative glass manufacturing processes, and various technical effects such as "Lalique satin" or opalescent glass. Pieces by Lalique are preserved in prominent museums such as the Corning Museum of Glass and the Metropolitan Museum of Glass in New York, the Louvre and the Orsay Museum in Paris, among many others.
RUDOLF MARCUSE (Berlin, 1878 - London, 1929)."Junge Griechin, (1905).Sculpture in alabaster.Signed on the base.Size: 25 x 13 x 15 cm, 28 x 10 x 13 x 13 cm (with base).Rudolf Marcuse was a German sculptor of Jewish descent. In 1909, he created one of his few major works, a monument to the philosopher Moses Mendelssohn at the Jewish Boys' School. It was destroyed in 1941 by members of the Sturmabteilung. In 1910, he received the "Prix de Rome" (inspired by the French Prix de Rome) from the Prussian Academy of Arts, which allowed him to stay at the Villa Strohl-Fern. In the same year, he won a gold medal at the Brussels International. During this period, he designed numerous statuettes in the Art Nouveau and Art Deco styles, which were produced by the bronze caster, Hermann Gladenbeck. He also designed porcelain figurines for the Schwarzburg Porcelain Workshops, the Royal Porcelain Factory in Berlin and the Rosenthal Manufactory.During the First World War, he visited several prisoner-of-war camps, where he created thirty-seven sculptures depicting the various ethnic types and nationalities among the prisoners. These were intended to be placed in a proposed "Reichskriegsmuseum" (National War Museum), which was never completed. As late as 1930, it was receiving monetary awards from the Prussian Ministry of Culture. This ended abruptly in 1933, when the National Socialist Party came to power and began rejecting his applications because of his 'non-Aryan race'. In 1936, thanks to his status as a "War Artist", he was allowed to emigrate to England. He died at his home in London, aged sixty-two.
