AN IMPORTANT CORK MODEL OF THE GREEK TEMPLE OF NEPTUNE at Paestum attributed to Domenico Padiglione, with exceptionally fine detail including fallen masonry around the perimeter, on an ebonised plinth, 26" x 11.75" x 7.5" high, on an oak plinth with a glazed case, 30.5" wide x 15.75" high overall. See illustration Provenance: This exceptional cork model was probably acquired by the Great Great Grandfather of the vendor, Edward Dawson (1802-1859) of Launde Abbey, Leicestershire. It is believed that Dawson acquired the model on the Grand Tour during the 1820's. Although the creator cannot be identified with certainty, there is a hint in the diary of another person who made the Grand Tour at about the same time, Richard Grenville, the First Duke of Buckingham and Chandos. In his diary, the Duke recalls dining in the ruins of the Temple of Neptune at Paestum on 13th May 1828 and meeting the local priest, whom he describes as "the real Cicerone of the place" and "a well-informed man". The diary continues: "He makes models in cork of the buildings, of singular beauty and correctness". (The private diary of Richard, Duke of Buckingham and Chandos, vol. II, published by Hurst & Blackett, 1862). This episode is referred to and the model is illustrated in a recent book about the Duke's voyage ("No Ordinary Tourist" by Jonathon Roberts and Gerard Morgan-Grenville, Milton Mill Publishing, 2006, pg. 139). A comparable model of the Temple of Neptune at Paestum by Domenico Padiglione is in Sir John Soane's Museum, Lincoln's Inn Fields, London. Padiglione made models of all three temples in Paestum for the Naples Museum around 1805. These post-date the excavations and restorations of the temples which began in 1802, during which large quantities of accumulated fragments were removed from within the temples. His models remained on view at the Naples Museum until the 1840's. He made numerous copies for private sale, despite the fact that his contract with the Museum forbade him from doing so. The three models in Sir John Soane's collection were probably made in the 1820's. The original inventories of the Soane Museum collection state that they were acquired from his pupil, John Sanders, circa 1826.

The Bristol Airport Lost Teddy Bear, a German golden mohair Teddy Bear, circa 1910, probably Strunz with black boot button eye, pronounced muzzle, black stitched nose and five claws, swivel head, jointed limbs and hump –21in. (53.5cm.) high (general wear and thinning, muzzle and limbs lacking stuffing, ears attached incorrectly, missing eye and pads recovered); and a postcard - type original photograph of the original owner with this bear inscribed on back. Notes: Staff at Bristol Airport found the antique bear, which has one eye and a floppy ear, in a bag with a frayed black and white photo, dated March 1918, of him being cuddled by two little children. Unlike Paddington Bear, the toy had no name tag but a message in faded ink on the back of the picture read: “With dearest love and kisses to our darling Daddie from your loving little daughters Dora and Glyn.” A public appeal was issued to try and trace the owner earlier this year but the team at Bristol Airport were unable to find any living relatives. The bear was found in 2012 and staff spent 14 months trawling flight records to see if they could find any two passengers with the same names as those mentioned on the back of the picture. When they could not they appealed for help from the public and a number of experts stepped forward to help with the search. They were able to trace the date of the picture after they discovered a second message on the picture, which said: “taken on Baby’s birthday March 4th 1918, one year and five - months - old.” But, despite tracing who the children were they were unable to find them. Robert Glyn Baker spotted his bear - nicknamed ‘Bristol’ by staff - after his former wife sent him a cutting of the Mature Times front page from January. The gobsmacked dad - of - one, who is still in Cyprus, was so shocked when he realised his bear was still out there he immediately rang the paper to try and get him back. “I thought it was lost forever, I was convinced it had been destroyed. I’m an only child and my auntie Dora didn’t have any children either so I am the only person that could have got the bear,” Robert said. “It’s the sentimental value really, my hands were so full with what I was carrying I thought I had left it in the toilet. I had so much with me, but like a fool I left it in the airport. Robert Baker is the son of Glyn Baker, born in 1916, who is pictured with his sister in a photograph found with the bear. Glyn married Elsie Evelyn Norman, who was born in 1917, and who died only recently. Glyn died a number of years ago. His older sister Dora, lived in Plymouth for much of her life after marrying a naval officer, and was once a secretary to MP Michael Foot. She did not have any children and ended her days in a Welsh nursing home aged 80.The card, which was found with the teddy, was written by Dora and Glyn to their father, and Robert’s grandfather, Nicholas Glyn Baker. He was a baker by trade, but was stationed in Baghdad during the First World War, where he later died from Malaria in 1917. It is thought the bear was originally bought by Glyn’s uncle in Glenover, Wales, where he grew up. The bear was actually bought originally for another baby, Kenneth Baker, who was born on 20th May 1910; sadly he died shortly afterwards and the bear was then passed on to Glyn Baker. Robert, a retired policeman with Gwent Police, is the only child of Glyn and Elsie, and was the only person the bear could go to. Thank you to Jacqui Mills, Public Relations Manager, Bristol Airport who spent so long researching the bears history, tracking down the owner and writing most of this description. Bob has recently been unwell and feels now is the time to find Bristol a new home

A gold mounted Steinkabinett circular bonbonniere set with a micromosaic plaque A gold mounted Steinkabinett circular bonbonniere set with a micromosaic plaque, unmarked, by Johann Christian Neuber, Dresden, the micromosaic, workshop of Giacomo Raffaelli, Rome, circa 1790, set à jour with fifty seven specimens of Saxon hardstones, each numbered on the chased gold mounts, the lid mounted with a micromosaic plaque of a goldfinch perched on a branch against a white background within a millefiori border , 8.2cm diameter Provenance: sale, Ball & Graupe. Berlin, 17 December 1927, lot 132 (1400 Reichs-M.); private collection Provenance: purchased pieces in Germany in the 1920s, and later in New York in the 1940s Literature: Walter Holzhausen, Johann Christian Neuber, Dresden, 1935, no. 52, illust.; Alexis Kugel (Ed.), Gold, Jasper and Carnelian; Johann Christian Neuber at the Saxon Court, London, 2012, p. 368, no. 182, illust. By mounting the specimens à jour , Neuber makes a feature of the varying degrees of translucency of the hardstones; it is noteworthy how those on the lid tone with the colours of the micromosaic. A similar hardstone specimen bonbonnière by Neuber, the lid inset with an associated micromosaic plaque of birds drinking from a cup, is in a private collection, see Kugel, op. cit. , p. 368, no. 180. Johann Christian Neuber (1736-1808) served his apprenticeship under Johann Friedrich Tectaon; in 1762 he submitted his masterpiece, its favourable reception allowing him to join the goldsmith s guild in Dresden and to register as a burgher of the city. By 1768 he was recorded as artisan maker of galanteries to the Court , an indication of how rapidly his skills were recognised. In 1775, wishing to ensure a good supply of hardstone for his work, Neuber obtained a concession to mine amethyst and jasper near Schlottwitz, south of Dresden. His career and workshop continued to flourish until the late 1780s, when he began to suffer financial setbacks; retiring in 1805, he died three years later in reduced circumstances. Giacomo Raffaelli (1753-1836) came from a family who worked for the Studio del Mosaico della Fabbrica della Basilica di S. Pietro in Rome. He is credited with many of the innovations in mosaici in piccolo , although it is probable some had been developed a little earlier. In 1775 Raffaelli held the first recorded exhibition of micromosaics at his private studio in the Piazza di Spagna. His subject matter was varied, from birds, flowers and animals, to views of the monuments of Rome, all of which were popular with Grand Tourists. A micromosaic plaque attributed to Giacomo Raffaelli, showing the same bird in reverse and perched on a fruiting branch, is in the Gilbert Collection, inv. no. 1996.623 (MM237). ** This lot is subject to 5% Temporary Import Duty and the buyer must pay Temporary Import Duty on both the hammer and the buyer's premium at a rate of 5%.
