* Gloster E28/39 prototype W4041/G. A unique and important static presentation model of this first British jet-powered aircraft to fly, built of wood with wartime camouflage upper surfaces, yellow under-wing, national markings, the cockpit hood of black lined silver, on stand and shaped base, black painted with plaque inscribed The Gloster Whittle. The First Jet Propelled Aircraft in the world to fly successfully - May 15th 1941 - Pilot P.E.G. Sayer, O.B.E., 14 in (37 cm) wingspan Constructed under great secrecy, the two prototypes of the E28/39 - W4041 and W4046 were being built at Glosters factory at Hucclecote, the threat of evening action led to the decision to transfer the assembly W4041 to the premises of Regent Motors in Cheltenham. On 7th April 1941 W4041 was removed by road to Hucclecote for initial taxiing trials by P.E.G. Sayer, then Glosters chief test pilot. Sayer made a few hops and Frank Whittle also taxiied W4041. After the initial text, W4041 was taken to Crabtrees garage in Cheltenham for final completion, before being dismantled and re-assembled at R.A.F. Cranwell prior to the first flight preparations. On 15 May 1941 Sayer successfully lifted W4041 off for its momentous first flight which lasted 17 minutes, a day of celebration for Whittle, George Carter (chief designer) and Sayer. W4041 went on to contribute much to jet aircraft design and development and can now been seen in the Science Museum in London. -1

An important period (c. 1937), manufacturers static display model of the Istres-Damascus-Paris race aircraft, serial 1-11, powered by three Alfa-Romeo 126 engines, the wood model with three-blade aluminium propellers, painted in overall red with silver and black, company logo, Italian national markings on the rudder, the fuselage sides decorated with I Sorci Verdi - (The Three Green Mice) logo used for the race, on tricolour stand with Marchetti base, the mainplanes inscribed with presentation inscription, A Dino Gordini Omaggio dell autone cordialimente **** Marchetti 1938 XVI, 28 in (71 cm) wingspan Born during the Golden Age of Italian aviation, the S.79 was one of the most successful Italian aircraft of the period. I-II took part in the Istres-Damascus-Paris race departing Istres on 20 August 1937, the first to reach Damascus was Jan-13 flown by Fiori and Lucchini at an average speed of 424 km/h, over the distance of 6.19 kms, however on the return flight Cupini and Paradisi flying 01-Nov snatched first place at an average speed of 352.76 km/h, second was Fiori and Lucchini in 01-May and with a change of crew Bruno Mussolini and Biseo came third in 1-136. -1

* Siaia Savoia-Marchetti S.55X. An historic aeronautical trophy, formerly presented to a crew member, unknown of one of the aircraft taking part in the Rome-Chicago-New York-Rome long-distance navigation flight, led by Air Minister Italo Balbo in 1933, these trophies comprise a gilded sphere with winged fin depicting in plan form the twenty-four aircraft taking part with plaque on cube base, 5 in (13.3 cm) high, together with the companion copper model of an S.55X mounted on a sphere with chromium-plated cube-base 4 3/8th in (11.2 cm) high, overall, defective During the night of 30 June/1st July 1933, under the command of Italo Balbo, the Italian Air Force departed on an ambitious project. With twenty-four and one reser highly trained crews Squadriglias Nos. 01-Aug were tasked with the daunting long-distance navigation flight from Rome to New York and return via Chicago. For the first time in aviation history a complete Storno flying in formation flew to New York to a tumultuous welcome. Despite bad weather and some unservicabilitiy the Storno arrived back at the Rome Lido, via Lisbon, after a total flight of approximately 19000 kms on 12 August. -2

A short diary acount by Dr E Ashton 1603 of 87th Field Ambulance, 29th Division, April 1915, in which Ashton arrives in the Dardanelles on the day of the Gallipoli Landing by Australian and New Zealand Troops, Anzac Day, 25th April 1915, Arrived onb 25th Ap at Dardanelles under heavy fire from our fleet and watched from our boat the landing of troops under terrible conditions, showers of bullets and shells were hurled at the troops who however made a splendid stand and on the following Wednesday the Turks were driven back to the village of Krithia a distance of about four and a half miles... (p. 2), Turkish and German troops constantly sheeling our beach, the first days shellign killing no less than 100 horses, the second day 50 horses. After several bombardments the Turkish were forced to retire fromt he redoubts in which many mahcine guns and plenty of ammunition were captured, these places proved to be death traps to our troops. About the end of May HMS Triumph and Majestic were both torpedoed... * Curtis (Alan H., 1897-1983). Wings. A Scrap-Book Portraying Incidents in the Life of a Pilot, c. 1914-1939, a fascinating set of four scrap albums compiled by Alan Curtis (started in 1932 and re-assembled in 1977), detailing his flying experiences from the beginning of the First World War to the early days of World War II, comprising numerous photos. of aircraft and pilots (both vintage and later), official documents, newspaper and magazine cuttings and other related paper souvenirs, including several signed menus, plus typescript reminiscences and manuscript notes by Curtis, incl. extracts from log books and diaries, etc., all carefully compiled in chronological order in four modern plastic ring binders, 4to Alan Harper Curtis, RNAS, RFC, RAF & S/Ldr, RAFVR. First flew at Hendon on 13th July 1914, with Edouard Baumann at the controls of a Wright biplane; joined the Royal Naval Air Service on 18th September 1915 and qualified for his pilots certificate on 7th November 1915 Enlisted in the Royal Flying Corps on 2nd March 1916 and gained his wings on 3rd August 1917 Served with No. 49 Squadron in France 19th October 1917 - 11th June 1918, carrying out bombing raids on French towns and engaging in numerous aerial scraps with the enemy (an extended handwritten account of an encounter that Curtis had on 7 June 1918 with von Richthofens Travelling Circus appears on p. 110 in volume 2). A Summary of Successful War Flights appears on pp. 145-6 in volume 2, including 2 Huns brought down out of control. 137 bombs dropped.

A typescript copy of a letter from the Wright Brothers to the editor, Aero Club of America Bulletin, dated March 30, 1912, two sheets, the first with embossed heading Wright Brothers Dayton, Ohio, typewritten to recto only A copy of an important letter to the Aero Club of America Bulletin, concerning the validity of the Wright Brothers 1903 patent for their flying machine, which the German Patent Office had pronounced void. The letter provides some particulars of the basis upon which the decision had been made, and states that the Wright Brothers will appeal against the decision. -1

Description of a Mystic Play as Performed in Ladak, Zaskar &c., Contained in [Journal of the Asiatic Society of Bengal, part 1, no. 2], Calcutta , 1865, ten mounted arched top albumen prints of Ladakh ghost dancers, mounted two to a page, pin-hole worming to images 2, 4 & 6 and worm tracing in upper part of images 8 & 10, some spotting & soiling throughout, paper damage to first two leaves and litho. plt. (of an unrelated article), one further folding plt. and lower wrapper, stitching broken and several leaves detached, slim 8vo Possibly the first photographs to be taken in this region. (1)

Dorsetshire Photographically Illustrated, the Detail and Touch of Nature Faithfully Reproduced by a new Process on Stone, by which Views are Rendered, Truthful, Artistic, and Durable, 4 vols. in two, n.d., c. 1850s, uncol. litho. title and seventy-four (of 76) photo litho. plts. of views in Dorset (inc. one double-page), with accompanying letterpress, a few pages loose, some minor spotting, contemp. cloth, rubbed, oblong folio 'The first book in which photographs were actually transferred onto lithographic stones... Pouncy's important work was a transitional stage between drawing and unretouched photography in book illustration'. McLean, Victorian Book Design and Colour Printing. (1)

Panorama of Calcutta, taken from the Ochterlony Monument on the Maidan, Calcutta, c. 1865, seven-section albumen print panorama mounted on linen, a few marks and a little edge-wear, a vertical crease to first section, overall approx. 21 x 205 cm, orig. printed label with title captions for each section to rear pastedown, orig. cloth, upper cover lettered in gilt, soiled and some wear, oblong folio Sache formed his partnership with Westfield in Calcutta in 1865. This photographic panorama is near-identical to one taken by Samuel Bourne in 1865, the livestock and figures in the foreground being the only obvious differences. (1)

Whitby Harbour [and] Goathland Moors, c. 1890, two albumen prints, the first showing boats in a night-lit harbour, the second showing the backs of two children and a donkey at a crossroads on the Moors, both initialled in the negatives and the latter numbered 374, both with some spotting and the first with minor creasing, 185 x 145 mm and 150 x 200 mm respectively (2)
