Written whilst imprisoned in the Tower of London, Sir William Davenant (1606-1668, godson of William Shakespeare) dedicated the preface to Thomas Hobbes, with the `Answer` to the preface by Hobbes espousing a general theory of poetry, although he admits up front that he is hindered in two ways: he is incompetent in poetry and flattered by Davenant`s praise. The first issue has the Tho. Newcomb for John Holden imprint; the second issue has the same imprint but is 4to. Wing D326. (1)

The University of Kansas have three autograph letters signed from Florence Nightingale to Alice Hepworth dated 8th January 1886, 9th March 1886 and 1st January 1887. In the first Florence Nightingale commends Miss Hepworth for bringing `the infants on so satisfactorily at Lea [infants school, possibly in Slough, Berkshire]. She also gives directions concerning two parcels of books to be delivered by Miss Hepworth. In the second letter Florence Nightingale discusses instruction of students in geography and religion and relates a case study of a young boy bought into St. Thomas hospital who after a year of care had the `real thing in his heart, the true religion`. In the second letter she begins `Please accept the (Revised) Bible which has been waiting for you so long` and presumably refers to the Bible here sold. In the third letter Miss Nightingale responds to Miss Hepworth`s decision to leave Lea and offers her best wishes. (1)
