This charming Series III Cob was originally supplied by Blue Star Garages Ltd, Axminster, Devon to its first owner a Mr W Newbury, a farmer from Colyton, Devon. The original order form is on file stating that Mr Newbury paid £452.8.2 plus an allowance of £20 for a part exchange. Thomas Ivester-Lloyd (British, 1873-1942) A Sketch book with nude studies, the Charleston, girl in a swimsuit on a beach, horses, foxhounds, riders pencil, within an album 23 x 16cm (9 x 6in) Other Notes: Thomas Ivester-Lloyd was born in Liverpool in 1873. He saw service in France in the First World War in 1914 with the Remount Service, and was later commissioned into the British Artillery. The War Office British Empire Exhibition in Wembley contained thirty dioramas of battles in British history painted by Thomas Ivester-Lloyd. The majority of his work was sporting, and he illustrated the British section of Sir John Buchanan Jardine’s "Hounds of the World". Thomas Ivester-Lloyd spent most of his life in and around Sherington, where he became Master of the Sherington Foot Beagles who hunted the country around Newport Pagnell in Bedfordshire and Northamptonshire.
Huybrecht Beuckelaer (Flemish, c. 1535/40-1605/1624) A fruit and vegetable, poultry and game seller with the Old Church of Delft beyond signed and dated lower left 'Huberius Beuckelaer 15(?8)5' oil on canvas 135 x 101cm (53 x 39in) Provenance: According to the present vendor, acquired by a member of their family, circa 1960, at a local auction, probably Pascal and Cann of Colchester Born in Antwerp and trained alongside his brother Joachim in the workshop of their uncle, Pieter Aertsen, Huybrecht Beuckelaer drew upon Aertsen's style and subject matter. He went on to join the successful workshop of his brother, Joachim, who established his reputation as a painter of kitchen and genre scenes. Due to the scarce documentation of Huybrecht's career, his works were previously attributed to his brother Joachim or Aertsen. Previously known as the anonymous "Monogrammist HB", it was not until 1997 that Huybrecht was definitively established as the author of a small number of works signed "HB". His identity and work was discussed by Dr Margreet Wolters in 'De Monogrammist HB geïdentificeerd: Huybrecht Beuckeleer', in: P. van den Brink, L.M. Helmus (red.), Album Discipulorum J.R.J. van Asperen de Boer, Zwolle 1997, 231-238. His earliest known work, The First Passover Feast, dated 1563, was only identified and sold as recently as 26th of May 2005 (lot 61) at Sotheby's in New York. Huybrecht is believed to have trained in Bronzino's workshop in Florence and worked as an assistant in the studio of Antonis de Mor. For a full discussion of his life and his coming to live in London, see both Josua Bruyn, "Hubert (Huybrecht) Beuckelaer, an Antwerp portrait painter, and his English patron, the Earl of Leicester", Juliette Roding and Eric Jan Sluijter, Dutch and Flemish artists in Britain 1550-1750, Leids Kunsthistorisch Jaarboek 13, 2003, pp. 85-112; and Elizabeth Goldring, Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester, and the World of Elizabethan Art: Painting and Patronage at the Court of Elizabeth I, Yale University Press, 2014, pp. 129-132, 163-164, 292. Unlike his better known brother, Huybrecht Beuckelaer is known to have travelled widely in France and probably was in Florence (see above). The last reference to him in Antwerp is in 1584 - an outstanding debt from his time in Bordeaux. It is likely that he had already left for England - though he may have come back briefly before he is definitely recorded in London in 1586 (see Bruyn, 2003, p. 92), where he probably (as a Protestant) went due to the political and religious turmoil in Antwerp at this precise time. He may well have been encouraged to go to London by the promise of - or hoped for - commissions from the Earl of Leicester (1532-1588). Leicester, who had been in the Spanish Netherlands accompanying Elizabeth I's failed suitor the Duke of Anjou when the latter was appointed Regent by Philip II, is known not only to have been painted along with his wife by Huybrecht Beuckelaer (see Bruyn, p. 91) but by 1583 market scenes with figures are recorded in the Inventory of Leicester House (see Goldring, p. 292). That the present painting is dated '15(?8)5' at the very moment that Huybrecht is probably already in London, means it has almost certainly remained ever since in this country, or, if it was painted in Antwerp on his brief return to that city, then he could well have brought it back with him to England. Huybrecht Beuckelaer is presumed to have remained and died in England, as the 'Daniell Buckler' recorded in the Parish of St Giles in the Fields, London, in 1625, is almost certainly his son by his first wife, born in Antwerp in the 1560s (see Goldring, p. 129). We are grateful to Dr Elizabeth Goldring for her assistance with this catalogue entry and to Dr Margreet Wolters for her thoughts on the form of the signature and the attribution to Huybrecht. Oil on canvas which has an early lining but the original tacking edges appear to have been retained. The tacking margins are very slight and have come detached from the stretcher in some areas. This has contributed to the poor tension of the canvas which in turn is causing undulations to the painting, notably at the bottom edge where the painting sags and at the top left corner. At the lower left corner is a tear with associated paint loss. There is an old tear in the canvas and lining to the left of the man's head which has been repaired from the reverse and crudely retouched. The paint layer is raised along the lines of the age cracks in many areas and there are scattered areas of loss across the painting, notably in the lower left corner. In thinner paint passages there is wear and abrasion. There are areas of retouching on the painting which have darkened over time, for example on the lady's right arm and the gourd at the lower left. The varnish is old and no longer adequately saturating the varnish, combined with the uneven surface texture some areas of the composition are difficult to read. There are scuffs and scratches to the surface of the varnish and a layer of dust. The black painted finish to the frame has numerous small losses and scratches.
Duke of Manchester's Light Horse, a collection of Regimental militaria relating to Sergeant Smith H. Rowley of Histon, Cambridgeshire, including mahogany boxed presentation inscription sword, maker R S Garden, London, no.644, from Captain Towgood '... for Proficiency in Sword Exercise July 4th 1865'; four silver cup trophies presented to Rowley; a silver model equestrian statuette 1871 with plaque below; Rowley's regimental cap; red tunic; Cambridgeshire Yeomanry plumed helmet with badge and chin strap; various papers and photographs; also a First World War medal group to Captain Sidney Smith Rowley, with miniatures; and a few other associated items including Masonic regalia (qty) Provenance: By family descent Offered with a newspaper dated 1930 with Rowley's obituary, describing him as the last of the 'D Troop' (Cambs) Duke of Manchester's Light Horse Volunteers. Other Notes: The Duke of Manchester's Light Horse, a famous cavalry regiment, was raised in Bedfordshire and Cambridgeshire by the Duke of Manchester at Kimbolton Castle. The Duke was inspired by his friend the Earl of Sandwich's formation of the 1st Huntingdonshire Rifles Volunteer Corps in the 1850s. The Manchesters wore instantly recognizable bright red tunics, perhaps as a gesture of oneupmanship towards Sandwich, whose troops were clad in drab dark green. By 1865 when the then Prince of Wales became Colonel of the regiment, it consisted of four troops at Bedford, Sharnbrook, Kimbolton and Cambridge. Officers were drawn from local county and farming families and each recruit had to be an excellent horseman and had to provide two horses. Every member paid handsomely for the privilege and pleasure of belonging to it, with each paying an annual subscription, as well as for his uniform, he also supplied his own horse and harness and took his batman with him in the periodical training. Most of the farmers broke their own horses - there was a requirement to be dashing in appearance but also to uphold the highest cavalry standards. The Regiment took part in many ceremonial parades, most notably as escort to HRH Princess Alexandra at her wedding in 1863 to HRH The Prince of Wales. Their Regimental balls were held at Kimbolton Castle, several of which were graced by the Prince of Wales. At the Castle hangs the great painting by Dessanges of the Duke of Manchester in his uniform as Colonel of the Light Horse, standing by his favourite charger. The Regiment was disbanded in 1882. The four silver cups in this lot were mainly presented for sword proficiency and date between 1865 and 1878.

Arthur James Wetherall Burgess, ROI, VPSMA (Australian, 1879-1957) SS Gretafield; and Charles Ernest Butler (British, 1864-1933), SS Oilfield, the first signed lower right "Arthur Burgess" and the second signed lower left "C E Butler '24" oil on canvas (a pair) 65 x 105cm (25 x 41in) SS Oilfield was a tank steamship launched by the Tyne Iron Shipbuilding Co. Ltd in Newcastle in 1923. It had several owners; including the Mid-Atlantic Shipping Co. Ltd and the Spanish government, which salvaged it in 1941 after being damaged during the Spanish Civil War in an air attack. Only in 1967, did it get demolished at Castellon. SS Gretafield was a tank steamship that was launched by Cammell Laird & Co. Ltd, Birkenhead for the Northern Petroleum Tank Steam Ship Company in 1928. The steamship was active in the Second World War and sadly in 1940, whilst on Admiralty service, it was torpedoed by a German submarine, causing the death of eleven people on board. The wreckage was washed up at Dunbeath, near Wick, and was abandoned as a total loss. SS Gretafield Oil on canvas which in unlined. The canvas tension is slack with slight undulations across the surface. There is retouching in the sky which appears to cover old areas of loss and abrasion. Overall the paint layer is stable. There is an uneven varnish layer which is yellowed with drip marks. The frame is in a good condition although the gilding on the name plaque is worn. SS Oldfield Oil on canvas which is unlined. The canvas is in plane with good tension. There is a small patch on the reverse covering a damage in the lower left hand corner. There is also a slight concave undulation near the top of the canvas, left if centre, which has been filled and retouched. Overall the paint layer is in a good, stable condition and is unvarnished.

Henry Hindley (1701-1771), a fine and ingenious clockmaker, also created the world’s first telescope powered by a precision clock movement, enabling the telescope to remain fixed on its subject without constant adjustment because of the earth’s rotation (Collection Science Museum, London).ConditionReluctant to keep ticking. English School, 18th Century Portrait of a gentleman, traditionally identified as Thomas Chatterton (1752-1770), half-length, in a brown coat and white stock, seated at a table, holding papers bears inscription "Chatterton. Poet." upper left oil on canvas 62 x 75cm (24 x 29in) Provenance: With J. Harris, Berkeley St., London. Christie's London, 18 December 1953, lot 118, as 'Thomas Gainsborough: Portrait of Thomas Chatterton, the poet' (£52.10.0 to Rudebeek). with M. Bernard, Ryder St., London. Christie's, London, 4 February 1955, lot 65, The Property of the Earl of Jersey, as 'Thomas Gainsborough: Portrait of Thomas Chatterton, the poet' (£27.6.0 to Fennil or Fenouil (£27.6s) The Long Gallery, Strawberry Hill, Twickenham; Christie's, London, 17 Feb 2008, lot 66, as 'English School, 18th Century'; where acquired by the vendor Other Notes: The tradition that Gainsborough painted Chatterton was first proposed by George Williams Fulcher in his 1856 biography of the artist. He described the portrait as a masterpiece 'with his long flowing hair and child-like face' (2nd edition, 1856, p. 89). Sir Walter Armstrong (Gainsborough and his place in British art, 1898, pp. 110, 193 and 1904, p. 261) doubted the identification and linked Fulcher's description with a picture that once belonged to E. Naylor, describing it as 'half length. Green coat; hair falling much over the forehead and reaching to the shoulders; the face almost in profile.' It measured 22 by 18 inches. It seems unlikely that Chatterton ever sat to Gainsborough. We are grateful to Hugh Belsey for his assistance with the catalogue entry. Oil on canvas which has been lined and extended at the right hand side. The canvas is in plane with good tension. The paint layer has suffered from damage and loss in the past, the texture is slightly uneven with wrinkling in the background. The painting has been heavily reworked. More recent retouchings in the background appear very matte. The varnish is clear, even and semi-glossy. There are small chips and losses to the gilding on the frame.
