Lot 31

A rare Dutch East India Company bronze howitzer, circa 1725, the cylindrical two stage barrel with flat cascabel and broad first reinforce cast with lifting loop and large diameter trunnions, the astragal moulded muzzle with 10 inch bore, 90cm long, maximum diameter 48cm. Provenance: The property of a private collector. Recovered from the wreck of an early 19th century Dutch East Indiaman off the west coast of Africa which was lost on a return trip from Batavia with a cargo including redundant cannon for smelting. Purchased directly from the salvers in 1980. The current lot is a rare model which can be described as being halfway between a mortar and a standard cannon. The short barrel allows relatively large projectiles to be fired (at the expense of accuracy and range) whilst retaining a degree of portability and maneuverability in the field. Projectiles could either be solid, hollow (explosive) or grapeshot making this a useful weapon perhaps well suited to amphibious campaigns.

Lot 32

A Dutch East India Company bronze mortar cannon, 18th century, the domed cascabel cast with trunnions, the breech with scallop shell vent guard and struck JANVER.. at the first reinforce, the large-bore bell-shaped barrel with lifting loop at the second reinforce and astragal moulded muzzle revealing 15 inch bore, 90cm long, maximum diameter 53cm. Provenance: The property of a private collector. Recovered from the wreck of an early 19th century Dutch East Indiaman off the west coast of Africa which was lost on a return trip from Batavia with a cargo including redundant cannon for smelting. Purchased directly from the salvers circa 1980. Mortar cannon were designed to lob hollow explosive-filled projectiles over obstacles such as the wall of a fortress. The maritime application mortar cannon was first capitalised by the French in the late 17th century who developed `bomb vessels` so that mortars can be fired from an offshore location. The earliest bomb vessels were usually adapted from other small craft suitably strengthened and often with the foremast removed to make room for the mortar to be placed amidships. During the 18th century the British developed a specific vessel for this role the `bomb ketch`. Such vessels were almost exclusively used to attack land based targets often deployed to disable enemy coastal forts or to assist in amphibious operations. Offshore mortars were employed to bomb the city during the battle of Copenhagen in 1801, with the bomb vessels placed the seaward side of the attacking British fleet. Maritime mortars tended to be designed with slightly longer barrels than their land-base counterparts mainly in an attempt to improve accuracy but also to reduce the chance of setting fire to the bomb vessel by containing the spread of the blast from the muzzle. The current lot is similar to the French 1732 pattern mortar and was probably primarily designed to be used on land.

Provenance: Crookham House, Crookham, Newbury, Berkshire. In 1748 the neighbouring Chamberhouse estate was purchased by George Amyand, he later extended his landholdings in the area with the purchase of part of Crookham manor and by 1768 had built the first Crookham House on the site of the present one. The Chamberhouse manor and estates were sold to Henry Tull in 1798, his family were living in Crookham House by 1847. It was they who pulled it down in about 1850 and erected the first phase of the present house on the same site. It can be observed that the building in its present state shows much evidence of structure and detail pre dating 1850 despite statements of having been `pulled down`. In 1830, Crookham House was involved in the so-called `Captain Swing` riots when agricultural workers, concerned about their standard of living, roamed the countryside, breaking the agricultural machinery which they believed was keeping wages down. On the evening of 17 November 1830 a group of men arrived at Crookham House (the forerunner of the present building) intending to smash machines owned by the lord of the manor, Richard Tull. They were met by Tull himself, his own labourers and special constables, but the mob failed to disperse. Tull and his men seized the ringleaders and a dozen or so were taken to Reading gaol. Ironically, it was a relative of the squire of Crookham, Jethro Tull of Prosperous Farm near Hungerford, who had published his influential treatise on agricultural reform `Horse Hoeing Husbandry` a century before and invented the seed drill. Crookham House is in a simple neo-classical style and was built in three phases between 1850 and 1900. It was not destined to be a country residence for long: in 1939 the house, as well as a number of cottages and farms on the estate, was sold. Crookham House was bought by the Great Western Railway Company, and during the Second World War, their Chief Goods Manager had his offices there. For varying closely related designs of table and lion monopodia, see Thomas Hope, Household Furniture, 1807, and specifically as part of the design for The Picture Gallery, Duchess Street (also included in Magazine of Fine Arts, 1821).
