J & E STEVENS PADDY & THE PIG MECHANICAL BANK. A classic bank depicting Paddy the inebriated Irishman and his pig. Typical of the time period, banks used stereotypes and exaggerated caricatures of various ethnicities. Paddy in a seated position is holding his pig. When the coin is placed on the pig`s snout and the lever pressed, the pig`s front hoof kicks the coin into Paddy`s mouth as he rolls his eyes heavenward. At first glance, the bank appears to be in very fine original condition, but upon closer examination, at some point many years ago, perhaps the father did some touch up and repainting to various areas of the bank. For the most part, black light inspection reveals this touch up was done prior to the 1960s and the paint is even crazed appropriately. However, the bank does have a fair amount of paint enhancement/touch up. SIZE: 7"" l x 8"" h. CONDITION: As stated above. 1-14264

Lot 3344

PAIR OF PRATT & LETCHWORTH HORSE DRAWN PLEASURE VEHICLES. The first toy is a hansom cab and as typical of Pratt & Letchworth, they paid great attention to detail in both the horse and cab. Circa 1880s-90s, the fine and delicate castings include such accoutrements as side lamps and a rear step to the seated driver. The second toy is a 2-seat open carriage. Also as typical of P&L, they employed a fine and delicate framework under the carriage body. Carriages are enameled in black with yellow pinstripe wheels and various colors highlighting other trim work. In both cases, a caramel colored horse with elaborately painted saddle and trappings further add to the appeal of these toys. Both toys have a seated driver with movable arms (older replacements). SIZE: 12"" & 15"" l, respectively. CONDITION: Overall good in both cases. Hansom cab has a replaced front directional wheel on horse`s front hoof and the horse appears to have some paint touch up to the caramel coloring. Second carriage rear seat is loose and missing pin that attaches it to the pressed steel body of the carriage. 1-14254

Lot 3346

LOT OF 2 WILKINS FIRE TOYS. The first toy is a 3-horse ladder wagon with integrally cast seated figures and the typical tin and iron back end. A latter Wilkins toy utilized an unusual method of attaching horses to the front end. Literally the mane of the horse has a hook at the rear and they virtually float on the yoke assembly so they give the impression of galloping. The second toy is an early style automotive hook & ladder wagon with an integrally cast seated fireman on the front end. A clockwork mechanism under the rear axle would allow the toy to propel forward. When the toy hit the wall or other obstacle, the ladders would spring up into action. I am sure Mom & Dad loved this toy when it would hit them in the leg. This method was a patented feature for the late Wilkins/early Kingsbury toys. SIZE: 20"" l and 18"" l, respectively. CONDITION: First toy show years of dust and soil that would be enhanced by a thorough cleaning. Missing fire buckets. Overall good to very good. Second toy is very fine original paint. Lacking one rubber covering to rear iron wheel. 1-14220

Lot 3365

KILGORE STUTZ ROADSTER. Commonly referred to as the Stutz, but this is actually believed to be a Pontiac roadster. A fabulous toy with a bevy of separate nickel plated components such as a fold-down windshield, cowl lights, separate rear bumpers, etc. This car is handsomely enameled in green with a creamy yellow chassis and nickel plated iron wheels including the spare tire. A large and visually attractive vehicle. Highly sought after by cast iron automotive collectors, this toy usually has missing trim pieces, but all pieces are present and appear to be original with this example. A great go-with for the TAT airplane, quite possibly this is the pilot`s car. SIZE: 10-1/2"" l. CONDITION: At first glance, toy appears to be all original in regards to paint. However, upon close examination, it was possibly dropped and sustained some damage to the undercarriage and was then professionally repaired and is virtually undetectable to the naked eye. 1-14000

Lot 3568

PHENOMENAL THREE-DIMENSIONAL LEADED GLASS SHOE STORE TRADE SIGN. On occasion a fabulous piece of any nature comes to the market, having been tucked away for perhaps 50, 80, or even 100 years. Oftentimes, there is no provenance or history attached to said item. But on rare occurrence, this information comes to light along with the extraordinary piece itself. Please read below the history of the shoe`s origins as well as view the accompanying photo showing the former location of the sign in the present day. Unfortunately we were unable to secure a photo of the shoe in use during the time period. Adolph Schauder emigrated to the United States from Germany in 1893. He settled in the northern Wisconsin town of Rhinelander. Adolph brought nothing with him other than leather so he could reestablish himself as a shoemaker and provide for his family. He was able to purchase a two story building in downtown Rhinelander on Brown Street. His shop was on street level and the family living quarters were directly above. Four generations continued this business until it was closed in 1989 having operated for 96 years. There were no heirs to inherit and continue the business. It is not exactly clear when Adolph had this incredible trade sign created, but we have been told by family members that it was created and put in place in the earliest part of the 20th century. At some point, the shoe was taken down from its outside display area and relegated to the basement. A family member recalls that often on the Fourth of July, the shoe would make an appearance in the town parade with family members strapping it to the roof of the car for all to see and remember. After the shoe store closed, the new owner of the building held an auction to dispose of various items left in the building. The consignor of this item attended the public auction at the shoe store`s location and was stunned to see this fabulous item that was never even mentioned in the auction flyer. Due to age and the wish to downsize, they have decided to liquidate and consolidate their various treasures. At first appearance, one thinks of this as a boot, but in reality, it was designed as a shoe and the white glass actually simulates a spat. The lettering ""S&S"" is done in burgundy glass and was perhaps meant to represent Schauder & Son. The heel of the shoe is actually a tin surround with an opening at the bottom. The top of the shoe has a covering and most likely at one point had an electrical fixture to light up the shoe. A hole on the underside of the shoe would allow for easy access to change the light bulb. Although the actual glass pieces have not been counted, it must easily be in excess of a few hundred pieces. As one would expect, there have probably been some aged repairs to some of the leading and glass tiles, but the piece is firm, solid and intact. The shoe itself utilized amber colored glass to simulate leather and as previously discussed, the spat is a creamy white with the burgundy S&S lettering. The toe area of the shoe employs a different style of glass being of a green color. Truly an amazing and most important folk art trade sign to come fresh to the market and undoubtedly a once in a lifetime opportunity to own a piece of this magnitude. SIZE: 25-1/2"" h x 36"" l x 12-1/2"" w. CONDITION: As stated above. 1-14108

Lot 3575

NONE SUCH"" MINCEMEAT LANTERN. Scarce, early 4-sided lantern with Halloween and patriotic themed polychrome reverse printed glass panels. The painted green tin lid is punched out with a moon and stars pattern and has a ring for hanging. An interior tin turbine mechanism is driven by the heat of a candle or lamp oil which would illuminate the side graphics and turn to produce rotating patterns on the ceiling through the top cut-outs. Side panels are captioned ""None Such Condensed Soup"", ""Our flag is First-Our Goods the Best"", ""None Such New England Mincemeat Like Mother Used to Make"", and ""None Such Prepared Pumpkin Condensed in Two Pie Packages"". The ""None Such"" brand was developed by Lewis Merrell and Oscar Soule who formed the ""Merrell-Soule Company"" in Syracuse, NY for the purpose of canning vegetables. They introduced the ""None Such"" mincemeat brand just before 1900 which also helps date this lantern that is stamped on the bottom ""Pat. August 31, 1897"". SIZE: 7"" l x 7"" w x 17"" h. CONDITION: Very good to excellent with some light paint loss to tin red body and green top, but one of the nicest examples cataloger has seen. 1-14201
