Report number 21100356, dated 11th November 2021.Accompanied by a report from SSEF stating that the sapphire is of Kashmir origin, with no indications of heating. Report number 100503, dated 6th June 2018.'In India my eyes have been dazzled by such jewels as never have been seen by the Western world.'Sapphires hailing from Kashmir display a vivid velvety blue hue that is unique to the region. They are among the most highly-prized gems due to their rarity and their scarcity; while there are still superfine sapphires to be found in Burma and Sri Lanka, no mining activity has taken place in Kashmir for many decades and the mine that yielded the finest specimens was largely exhausted by 1887, after only six years of production. Kashmir sapphires were first discovered in the late 1870s/early1880s high up in the snow-clad Great Himalayas of north-western India where a landslide revealed hitherto unknown deposits in a rock valley 4500m above sea level. By 1882 the Maharaja of Kashmir had taken control of the mine that could only be worked from July-September each year due to the high altitude and near perpetual heavy snowfall. Because of its remote location mining techniques were always primitive. This first mine, known as the Old Mine, was really just a series of shallow pits sunk into the rock. Apparently, the first specimens were so huge and abundant, they were studded in places as thick as 'plums in a pudding' and could be plucked from the rock. By 1887 the Old Mine was nearly exhausted and a New Mine, on the valley floor 250m below, gave up some fine sapphires but they were generally of lesser quality, size and quantity. The area was worked sporadically until the late 1920s/early 1930s but the glory years of the 1880s were never repeated. Legend tells that the finest stones from this 30-40 year period were all acquired by the Maharaja and jealously guarded in the chambers of the Kashmir State Treasury. British geologist, Charles Stewart Middlemiss, Superintendent of the Mineral Survey of Jammu and Kashmir State from 1917 until 1930, recorded seeing some of this fabled hoard, describing the sacks of rough and cut gems as a 'king's ransom', with some sapphires the size of polo balls.Today, Kashmir sapphires set the standard against which all other sapphires are measured and are avidly sought by collectors who are prepared to pay princely sums for top-quality specimens from this extraordinary period in the history of gemmology. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: ** VAT on imported items at a preferential rate of 5% on Hammer Price and the prevailing rate on Buyer's Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

English Provincial School, 1612, Portrait of Mrs Smyth and her young son, Inscribed and dated 1612, Oil on panel, 66 x 53 cm.The portrait almost certainly depicts the wife and son of John Smyth (1567-1641), historian and author of The Berkeley Manuscript. The work was published under the title The Berkeley Manuscripts: The Lives Of The Berkeleys, Lords Of The Honour, Castle And Manor Of Berkeley, In The County Of Gloucester, From 1066 To 1618, With A Description Of The Hundred Of Berkeley And Of Its Inhabitants.Smyth wrote the manuscripts for the Berkeley family who retain their seat at Berkeley Castle to this day, in an unbroken line of more than 850 years. The Manuscript details the lives of people that Smyth himself would have known and is credited with providing an extraordinary insight to the lives and times of the 1500s and 1600s.Smyth also completed two other important works: The Lives of the Berkeleys and Men and Armour for Gloucestershire in 1608.The child in this portrait is John Smyth the Younger (1611-92), who followed his father as steward of the Gloucestershire lands of Lord Berkeley and continued his practice of writing and archiving papers. The inscription above the childs head in the portrait notes that he is pictured in his first year, which tallies with the 1612 date inscribed opposite. For the practical purpose of toilet training, from the mid 16th to late 19th century, it was the custom of well-to-do families to dress all young children in gowns like this until the age of six or seven when they were breeched or first put in trousers.Smyth the Youngers writing shed light on how families were reluctant to take sides in the Civil War.J.H. Cooke, referred to on the auction catalogue cutting pasted to the verso, was James Herbert Cooke, Land Steward to the Right Honourable Lord Fitzhardinge, the illegitimate grandson of the 5th Earl of Berkeley. Cooke was also the Local Secretary of the Bristol and Gloucestershire Archaeological Society, founded in 1876, and a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries. In 1873 he published the book A Sketch of the History of Berkeley, and was author of other books too.He is credited with writing a number of articles for the society, including On the Great Berkeley Law-Suit of the 15th and 16th Centuries, A Chapter of Gloucestershie History (1878-79), and Wanswell Court, and its Occupants for Seven Centuries (1881). A MAHOGANY BOOKCASE'PEPYSIAN' TYPE, SECOND QUARTER 18TH CENTURY233cm high, 130cm wide, 45cm deepAn unusual feature of this bookcase is that the profile of the glazing bars of the upper section has also been used to bisect the panels of the lower section. The profile of the thick glazing bars also suggests dating the bookcase to the second quarter of the 18th century. The same profile of glazing bars is present to the windows of several Spitalfields houses of the period. In addition the use of mahogany is evident in the construction of the documented staircase at 4-6 Fournier Street, Spitalfields. Mahogany was also known to have been used at Houghton Hall and various churches at this early period. For further discussion and evidence of the early mahogany trade and use of the timber, See Adam Bowett, The English mahogany trade 1700-1793, thesis, 1996. This bookcase is similar in form to the 'Pepys Bookcase' first made by the Master Joiner Thomas Simpson (alias Sympson the Joiner) for the naval administrator and diarist Samuel Pepys to house his vast collection of books at his residence at Seething Lane, London. It is possible that Pepys himself had a hand in the design of the original bookcase. For a related example of bookcase, see Adam Bowet, Early Georgian Furniture 1715-1740, Antiques Collectors Club, 2009, page 133, plate 3:75.  Condition Report: Marks, knocks, scratches and abrasions commensurate with age and use. Old splits and chips. Various losses to the putty securing the glazed panels. Locks and catches appear original. Key present and operates both locks. Escutcheons are period replacement. Some small filled holes are visible from previous escutcheons. Two escutcheons are lacking some of their securing pins but remain firmly in position. Hinges are old replacements. Small fillets of timber have been applied adjacent to them to fill the gap from the previously larger hinges. The screws securing the hinges have been 'overdriven' in places resulting in the tips of the screws poking out of the sides of the bookcase. Some small filled holes are also visible to the front of the doors adjacent to the hinges. Some old vertical splits and cracks to backboards. Evidence of old worm. Later securing blocks to backs or feet are detached, three are present. One rear foot with detached rear facet. Please refer to additional images for visual reference to condition.           Condition Report Disclaimer

A GEORGE II YEW AND CHESTNUT 'GOTHIK' WINDSOR ARMCHAIRTHAMES VALLEY, MID 18TH CENTURY106.5cm high, 64cm wide, 55cm deep overallA remarkably similar chair is held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York (Accession Number: 2016.234). Eighteenth century chairs with Gothic shaped backs and pierced splats are considered to represent the pinnacle of Windsor chair design, as fashionable items of furniture made in the first half of the 18th century and into the second half. Although now very rare, they were regularly made and listed in invoices by makers in St Paul's Churchyard from the second quarter of the 18th century. In 1734, for example, one invoice records 'Paid John Willis rect in Paul's Churchyard for 1 Windsor Settee with 4 seats, Two ditto with 3 seats each, and 8 single chairs at 6 ye seat £5.8.0. Pd' [Ref. George Bowes, London accounts 1733-34. Durham Record Office. D/Strathmore/V1390].Chairs of this type owe much to the Gothic revival in architecture and furniture which took place in the second quarter of the 18th century. This style was famously reflected in the home of Horace Walpole (1717 - 1797), who purchased a house at Strawberry Hill, London, and converted it into a cottage with Gothic tracery windows, which has become synonymous with this style of seating.   Condition Report: There are some marks, scratches, chips, splits, abrasions consistent with age and use. This chair has typical running repairs including some peg/dowel fixings to the back rails joining the pierced splats. The back of the seat has a section of timber set into it. The arched crest rail has an opened joint to the tip and two cracks to the moulding at the most extreme point in the bend of the timber. The shaped end of one arm chipped, the shaped section of the arm end cracked and repaired. There are some cracks to the legs. Please refer to the additional images for a visual reference of condition. Condition Report Disclaimer
