Lot 5306

A Late 18th Century or Early 19th Century Coin Purse, designed as a small grey mesh sack with larger loops at the top to hold the draw chain, this being fitted with small open bobbles resembling cages. Together with Three 19th Century Coin Purses, the largest fitted with a chatelaine hook designed as an iris, attached to the handle chain. The purse is formed with a taupe suede/leather, tan inside, fitted snugly into a shaped metal frame, embossed both sides with flowers. Thirdly, a silver metal mesh purse, looking similar to a miser's purse but without the central opening, but fitted with a gold metal slider. Each end has a slender metal opening frame, one in gold one in silver. Finally, a delicate black net purse with gold metal frame, classically embossed, embroidered with silver and gold cut steel beads in the same design but different colours back and front. Finished with a shaped gold metal tassel in bell flower form, to each bottom corner (4). First purse, a few of the larger loops holding the chair along the draw section. The second purse bag fabric is drab but appears unworn. The final bag has slight damage to the net just under the centre front of the frame.

Lot 5310

Two European Alphabet Samplers of the type worked in Germany in the 1850's to 1890's. Usually on fine white cotton, and worked in red and white silk thread, these examples also have scalloped outer edges. The first example is finished, and as well as alphabet and numbers, the embroidery included floral sprays to each of the top corners, and very fine central detail that includes the initials ''AM'' surrounded by bell shaped flowers. The bottom two corners feature eyelet work, to the left with a heart, to the right with flowers and leaves. Approx. 12 inches or 30.5cm. Example two is unusual to find, as it is headed up ''Lehrgang im Weifssticken'' which roughly translates as Embroidery Instruction or Educational Aide. The white cotton is embroidered with various forms for the alphabet letters, with a mix of techniques and colours, for use as an aide memoire for the embroiderer, working from simple to more complex. Top to bottom. The Company producing it is a Viennese Publisher and printer founded in 1793, A. Pichler's Witwe & Sohn is in Vienna, in Margarethenplatz 2 and1, Johannesgasse 29. Finally, The Upper Section of a Band Sampler, embroidered in silk with bands of different designs, and four sets of the alphabet, in different colours, styles and sizes. Selvedges to the sides, hemmed to the top, probably English. (3). Seemingly unused. Clean. The band sampler is incomplete with a raw lower edge.

Lot 5313

Two Fine Tortoiseshell Étuis, of oval form, the first lined in ruby velvet and fitted to contain a miniature pair of embossed, silver metal scissors and a silver metal thimble decorated with linked hearts and crosses. Approx. 3 inches or 7.5cm in diameter and 2 inches or 5cm front to back. The second sewing set, larger, has a gold metal panel inset underneath, engraved with initials. The interior has been formed so that the tools are encased top and bottom within their places, thus holding a pair of small scissors, a thimble, a stiletto, needle and a needle case. . Item I has a nibble to the tortoiseshell each side of the front panels near the fastener, and a tiny chip plus a surface crack to the lower section. Clasp and hinge sound.

Lot 5323

Two Deeply and Intricately Carved Chinese Ivory Screw-Topped Cases, the largest measuring 3.75 inches or 9.5cm, the second 3.5 inches or 9cm. Together with A Ruby Velvet Topped Chinese Carved Ivory Pincushion, the base carved in pedestal style (3). The first case has a split across the bottom end.

A Victorian Brown Leather Sewing Companion lined in mauve silk and fitted in the lid for various ivory tools, the base compartment empty for the storage of work in progress (a few odd items inside); A Small Domed Leather Case fitted for tools, but empty, bone motif on the exterior; A Decorative, Shaped Case in pale mauve leather, the lid decorated with mother-of-pearl, the inside fitted with various sewing tools and a silver metal thimble, and A Red Leather Shoe with fittings inside (4). All used, first item catch difficult, no major issues to report.

Three 19th Century Leather Covered Sewing Sets, the first of handbag form with rigid handle, the interior unfolding to reveal a plum silk lining, fitted with leather holders and a compartment at the top. Inside, seven ivory items, including a bodkin, needle case, large shuttle, buttonhook and nine metal items to include silver metal scissors with gold decoration. An oval mirror completes the set. Together with a smaller leather case in suitcase form, a central decoration possibly of a bird landing on a nest, side decoration in gold colour and steel, decorative gold clasp, the inside lid lined in ruby moiré silk and fitted with a small ivory bobbin and thread winder, the other half lined in ruby velvet and holding four/five ivory tools (the needle case might be bone), and finally a larger rectangular box with gold decoration to the lid, the inside lined with gold patterned paper, and firstly a red leather lift-out tray currently holding three ivory tools, the underneath fitted section lined in cream paper with gold decoration and holding a glass bottle with silver metal top for liquid/perfume, four thread holders, a place for a small thimble and a small ''book'' that lifts out with pins inside.. Item 1, some wear to the exterior of the silk at the sides of the bag. Item 3 lacks some items and all 4 thread holders have chipped ends.

Ten Mother-of-Pearl Sewing Items, to include a slender needle holder carved with flowers, shaped lower end, and a dog perched at the top; a similar needle holder, larger, carved more classically, the top section as feathers; a small and pretty pair of steel scissors, the handles of pearl; a small box marked ''needles'', containing small black packets of needles; a bone spool with pearl top; two rectangular thread winders or Chinese gaming counters, both carved, with a pair of love birds to one side and entwined initials to the other, plus three circular counters, also with birds, fruits and initials.. A chip inside the first item; the larger needle case has, for no apparent reason, the interior hole blocked up. The box has three chips to the lid and a crack to the bottom front right.

Lot 5337

Animals: Three Needlework Items to include a screw-top bone needle case topped with a squirrel eating a nut; another such item topped with a pair of deer next to a tree, the case section formed as a hoof with real skin and hair; and a bone case containing a Stanhope/stiletto, carved as a fish.. First item has some green stain to the honeycomb top section. For the second item, the animal fur is thin in places and the horns/antlers have slight chips to the tips; item three, the stiletto is reluctant to come out of the fish's mouth and the mouth is very slightly chipped. The Stanhope is no longer clearly visible

Antique Lace, all 19th century: A Brussels Point de Gaze needle lace long, shaped collar, roses with tiered petals all along the length. Together with a good, crisp, Point de Gaze lappet designed with flowers; a fragment of Brussels bobbin appliqué with a design of flowers and bows; a Belgian needle lace lappet with geometric design to each end; a fine black Chantilly lace lappet with a large flower head to each end; and a wider black Chantilly lace lappet (6). Here and there a small break in the net, item 4 having slightly more damage. However, the collar has been cut in half just off the half way point, and has been washed. The first lappet, original colour, has some very light foxing.

Four 19th Century Purses of different forms, comprising a reticule worked in ginger with pale orange embroidery, mixed silk tassel at the bottom, the purse formed in a fashion reminiscent of the circa 1830's bags with a lower panel clearly formed with a rigid top. This purse appears to have a wire loop at the very top and at the lower position. No handle or fastening. Overall length approx. 9 inches or 23cm. Together with a good fine mid to late 19t century miser's purse in autumn colours, incorporating paisley designs against a black background at each end, a single, embroidered slider, a double tassel to the rounded end and three tassels embroidered in flame stitch; a royal blue and mustard silk draw fastening bag, one gold bobble to the draw thread, finished with a mustard and blue silk tassel. Cream kid lining; Finally, a brown crochet purse fitted with a very decorative gold embossed metal frame, and particularly ornate tassel.. The first item has a small repair in the upper section. The miser's purse has some colour shading mainly where gathered under the slider. The third item has another gold bobble loose inside the bag, the draw thread being damaged.

Lot 5371

Three Fine and Delicate Late 18th/Early 19th Century Coin Purses, the first with a look of Bebilla, the minute needlework in beige tinged with yellow in two distinct areas. The upper border is shaded from cream to dark green. The body appears to be worked in overlapping bands, some of which are no longer attached. Unlined. Metal thread tassel. Draw thread top; an unusual purse worked in pale blue and lemon to the top layer and yellow to the inside, side seam, open work to the top layer in the blue areas. Tassel and draw thread; and the third purse, also with draw thread, worked in fine gold and silver metal threads, in design bands, with raised flower heads and a scalloped-edge frill at the lower section, plus simple tassel.. Item 1 bears an old price label of £145. Green silk placed inside for better image visibility.

Lot 5372

Three Good 19th Century Coin Purses with gold metal frames, the first with a heavily embossed frame and tiny gold metal chain, two decorative gold metal bobbles at the bottom. Worked in a mix of silk and metal threads, the purse is designed in bands in coral, black, white, with designs incorporating those colours plus a hint of yellow. Unlined, and very firm. Next, a woven beaded example, the frame distinctive with an entwined serpent at each side, the slender top panel lightly embossed. The glass and gold metal beads are designed as flowers and trees. Lined in teal silk; finally, an early coin purse with a curved gold metal frame, a mythical winged beast to each side panel. One section is inlaid with white mother-of-pearl. The body of the bag, worked in green silks and gold metal thread, resembles spider's webs. Coiled metal thread tassel.. The first purse feels crisp, as new. Purse three is missing the panel of MOP to the second side of the frame. Tassel tarnished. Old price label for 375€. No marks noted for gold.

A Good 19th Century Coin Purse with substantial gold metal frame, the woven bead design one of a peacock with tail feathers fanned out, the bird meandering through a colourful flower garden, this garden being expanded on the back panel to include a garland of roses. The rounded bottom panel is worked in contrasting colours. Simple gold thread strap, lined in old silk; Together with Three More 19th Century Coin Purses, the first an unstructured bead sack woven with paisley boteh and spring flowers. Next, a plain knitted ruby silk bag, unusual with a divider inside, topped with a floral embossed gold metal frame. Finally, a navy-blue bag with tiny gold beads incorporated into the body and designed as a star to the bottom. Good gold metal frame formed as bunches of grapes, and very decorative tassel (4). Item 1, the frame is crudely attached. The beadwork bag is crisp and firm. Item 2 has one repair mid body and the tassels are worn.

Five Miscellaneous Quality 19th Century Accessory Items, the first featuring a complex design for a miser's purse, three bands containing various motifs in yellow, black, raspberry, the ends and centre panel in raspberry, one end with a silk fringe, and fitted with two sliders in silver metal. Next, an extremely fine miser's purse, with three panels of a geometric pattern, almost like Tumbling Block, and two more open in rows, all incorporating the same colours of silk thread. Fitted with two small bone sliders and silk fringing to each end.; a small embroidered circular panel, possibly the centre for a hat, almost with an Asian feel, formed with dense silver metal meandering foliage, leaves of coloured metal beads, two acorns, tiny gold sequins and an oval red glass stone. Edged and backed with purple crepe; a small coin purse with embossed gold metal frame, push-button opening, the top resembling a flower, below which is attached a small bag in teal and worked with tiny gold beads, the underside in a design matching that of the metal top. Finally, an expanding embossed gold metal frame for a reticule, fitted with a substantial gold chain handle, the expanding section firmly contained within the lid but opening to a useful circumference.. Slight wear to the opening section, item 1 and one tassel absent. Item 2 appears crisp and perhaps unused. The circular panel lacks the odd gold sequin and the metal thread areas are tarnished.

Three Small, But Delicately Formed Miser's Purses, the first with a hint of India, the ground a strong green incorporating motifs in gold metal beads, each motif with four segments, their interiors in colour. Fitted most unusually with two gold metal sliders shaped with flowers and leaves, these details being enamelled in black or white. At each end, a shaped bobble also similarly decorated. Additional beadwork around the access slit. Next, a small, fine miser's purse worked in muted colours in squares, some with designs within, all bordered with strong ruby. The two cream sliders, rounded, are decorated with two shades of gold. Finally, a small miser's purse in stripes of cream and raspberry, fitted with gold embossed metal sliders and a bobble at each end in the form of pendulous flowers with black centres.. All appear in good order.

Two Art Deco Azute or Assyut Shawls, from circa 1925: the first, in black cotton, with silver metal strip decoration is designed with large central diamonds containing varied geometric patterns and smaller motifs to each end. Approx. 23 inches or 59cm by 94 inches or 238cm. Together with a cream Azute, similar, the body of the shawl filled with three diamonds, the central one marginally bigger, small motifs filling remaining space. Approx. 31 inches or 79cm or 81 inches by 209cm (2). Both in good used condition, the cream shawl with a 0.5cm hole to one end just before the rolled hem.

Two Cream Art Deco Azute or Assyut Shawls, from circa 1925: the first designed with three central diamonds of equal size, filled with geometric diagonal lines, the two to the outside being similar, the central diamond with extra work. Approx. 28 inches or 71cm by 80 inches or 203cm. Together with a shawl with regular band design, four differing patterns, repeated, facing towards the centre. Approx. 23 inches or 59cm by 93 inches or 238cm.. Both shawls clean and in good used condition. Shawl 2 slightly heavier.

Two Attractive 19th Century Coin Purses, both with compartments inside, covered in pink Mother of Pearl. The first, looking rather like a visiting card case from the outside, is formed in diamond-shaped panels. The interior, covered in royal blue moiré silk, opens in concertina fashion with the catch on the longer sides. The smaller coin purse opens with a handbag style metal catch and is fitted with red glazed cotton interior. Accompanied by a modern white mother-of-pearl fan-shaped pendant and a plastic hair comb fitted with a curved fan at the top. Together with a spectacle case decorated with thin mother-of-pearl paillettes and pearls and seven hat pins, three with turquoise glass bead tops and four with similar in black, and a black machine lace and fabric fan, embellished with gold sequins, the leaf mounted on serpentine sticks. Single fold line, clean condition with bright colours. Has small amount of paper loss lower left corner, tape stuck on top right coroner and tape residue in other corners. Also has snipe over 007 in white credits. Some light creasing a small tape lift on lower central border. Few other light marks but one of the best original condition posters for this movie we have seen!

WW1 British Royal Naval Air Service Pilots Flying Log books to Sub Lt, later Wing Commander Harry Laurence Nunn, DFC, DSC. This lot comprises of two log books and two 18ct Gold Medallions. The first log book is the RNAS version and begins in May 1916 and ends on Nov 1st 1918. The book is completely filled with entries. Over 20 aircraft types flown. July 1917 posted to Milan, Italy, with No 6 Wing, No 2 Squadron Airplane Flight. Flying Italian Caproni Triplanes. Jan 1918 posted to Malta Sea Plane Base. Anti Submarine patrols. Feb 8th 1918 awarded DSC for sinking a U Boat. April 1918 on duty with 67 Wing RAF Southern Italy. July 26th 1918 another U Boat sunk by his aircraft. Italian Press cutting with translation text pasted to rear of book about being decorated. Also photo press cutting about his aircraft hitting Felixstowe Pier. He was awarded two 750 Gold (18ct Gold) medallions (Combined weight 13 grams.) by the Giovanni Battista Caproni, 1st Count of Taliedo. "Gianni" Caproni, was an Italian aeronautical engineer, civil engineer, electrical engineer, and aircraft designer who founded the Caproni aircraft-manufacturing company.  Both show the company Mountain Goat symbol and the aircraft factory located in Milan. Signed by the artist. One has a plain reverse, while the other has a Triplane on the reverse. The RAF Log book says 3rd log book, flying times brought forward 1325 hours. Starts Jan 1919. Numerous aircraft types listed. 1920's 1930's lists civilian flights. Called up for regular RAF service 26th August 1939. Final entry is 9/7/43. Rare WW2 Luftwaffe Ace Major Walter Nowotny (7th December 1920 KIA 8th November 1944), Knights Cross of the Iron Cross with Oak leaves, Swords and Diamonds. Nowotny is credited with 258 confirmed air victories achieved in 442 combat missions, 255 of his victories were on the Eastern Front with JG54 while 3 were achieved while flying the Messerschmitt Me 262 jet fighter during the Defence of the Reich in 1944. He scored most of his victories flying the Focke Wulf Fw190 and scored approximately 50 in the Messerschmitt Bf109. He was the first pilot to achieve 250 victories, awarded the Knights Cross of the Iron Cross with Oak leaves, Swords and Diamonds on 19th October 1943 and ordered to stoPOperational flying. He embarked on a propaganda tour but was reinstated to front line service in September 1944 to test and develop tactics for the new Me 262 jet fighter and was credited with 3 aerial victories in the Me 262 before being killed at Epe (1. 6 miles west of Hesepe) following combat with USAAF fighters on 8th November 1944. Nowotny was given a full state funeral and the first German operational jet fighter wing, Jagdgeschwader 7 Nowotny was named in his honour. A rare, signed Hoffman card approx 14 cm x 9cm bearing Nowotnys original wartime signature supplied with a Certificate of Authenticity. Good Condition. WW2 Navy Tadeusz Lesisz signed Polish cover date stamp Warsaw 25th September 1970. Tadeusz Lesisz was one of the worlds last surviving veterans to have served as an officer from the first day of the Second World War until its end. As gunnery officer he sailed on Polish vessels under the command of the Royal Navy, participating in the Battle of the Atlantic, the Arctic Convoys, Operation Torch and at D Day. He was in command of the anti-aircraft guns on a Polish destroyer berthed in Cowes on the night of 4 May 1942; the ships formidable barrage prevented more widespread destruction of the Isle of Wight port during a German air raid. Robert Bailey Smiths Defiance Artist Proof Edition, signed by Ian Smith, GCLM, ID, the print shows Lt. Ian Smith of 237 (Rhodesia) Squadron RAF attacking a rail yard in the Italian Po Valley in July 1944. Lt Smith went on to become the Prime Minister of Rhodesia, Africa (now Zimbabwe) in April 1964, on November 11th, 1965 he declared Rhodesias independence from Britain, the first Commonwealth Prime Minister to do so.
