An attractive usage of this rare handstamp on the first recorded date of use. Photo Note: The Second Contingent embarked on the S.S. "Laurentian" which sailed from Halifax on 20 January 1900 and made a planned stop at St. Vincent, Cape Verde Islands on 31 January. On the day before the ship arrived at St. Vincent , mail to be landed was cancelled by an impression of the "En Route" handstamp by the four postal workers on board. A silver gilt and enamel egg, by Anthony Elson, London 1979,the silver gilt pedestal egg cup with a cover naturalistically modelled and enamelled as an egg, revealing a `surprise` spring loaded, parcel gilt basket of eggs inside, numbered 56/200, 1.5cm high Anthony Elson (b.1935) trained at Brighton College of Art, before moving on to the Royal College of Art. His first job subsequently was at William Comyns Ltd. Then, in 1966, he took over a company that had produced traditional ecclesiastical designs. There he proceeded to start developing his contemporary designs. Examples of his work are in Salters` Hall, the Inner Temple London and Lincoln Cathedral.
A 18ct gold Longines open faced pocket watch, on 9ct gold Albert with original presentation box, the engine turned back inscribed `RMS Hilary 1911` Case and movement No. 2354752 Accompanying this watch is a letter dated `Havre April 11th 1911`, from Commander and officers of RMS Hilary, inscribed `to Mr Dalrimple as an appreciation of the brave deed performed by you this afternoon in saving the life of the boy William Angus, a member of our crew, who fell overboard, we wish to offer this slight token, we are sincerely H. Forbes Commander, G. Fairweather First Officer, Francis E. Barlow Second Officer, H. Maiden Third Officer, and A. Allan Forth Officer`.`A further note of appreciation dated April 16th 1911, presented to Mr Dalrimple by the passengers of the RMS Hilary as a slight recognition of a gallant act done at Havre in saving a sailor from drowning on Tuesday April 11th, with their best wishes. A sealed onion bottle dated 1699, the squat body of a mid green tone, with a short tapering neck and string rim, bearing a seal of a King`s head facing right with the initials W R E and date 1699, some damages to the neck, 16cm. The engraving can be attributed to the King`s Head tavern in the High Street, Oxford, the initials relating to Richard and Elizabeth Walker who kept the tavern between 1694 and 1704. 1699 is the first year since 1688 that R W included the initials of his wife on the seal. A small theatrical Toby jug c.1825-30, of John Liston in his role as Paul Pry, wearing a large black top hat and seated on a grassy mound, his famed umbrella tucked under his left arm, 14.5cm. Provenance: from the Phil Medgett Collection of Toby Jugs. Paul Pry was John Liston`s most memorable comic role, first appearing onstage in September 1825 as part of John Poole`s three act farce. The play centred around this interfering busybody who was in the habit of leaving an umbrella behind at all times, in order to give him an excuse to return and eavesdrop.
A pair of Chamberlain`s armorial dishes from a dessert service c.1820, the wells painted with the arms of the Clifford-Constable family within gadrooned borders of three floral panels reserved on a claret ground, impressed and painted marks, 26.5cm. (2) The armorial on the dish is of Constable quartering Clifford, Martin, Blount and Aston; impaling Chichester quartering Raleigh and Pownell for the marriage of Sir Thomas Aston Clifford-Constable, 3rd baronet of North Ferriby, Yorkshire to his first cousin, Marianne Chichester of Calverleigh Court, Devon on 28th September 1827.
A Meissen oval salt c.1770, the deep well raised on a tripod stand applied with three female figureheads, painted with continuous foliate designs in blue and gilt, and a pair of 19th century Meissen oval salts decorated with a form of the Onion pattern, blue crossed swords marks, some damage to the first, 8.5cm max. A Worcester armorial saucer c.1758, printed in black with an elaborate scrolling and floral cartouche, the central shield painted with the arms of Wilson impaling Langton, 11.7cm. Cf. H Rissik-Marshall, Coloured Worcester Porcelain of the First Period, pl. 35, no. 754. A small number of these services were made by the factory using printed blanks and decorating the arms to order, possibly at external ateliers such as that of James Giles. However, the British Museum has a teapot stand from the same service and notes that the arms are incorrectly painted.
A group of four 19th Century black basalt teapots, the first slip-cast and applied with opposing vignettes of Classical figures and with pinned cover with figural knop, unmarked, but of Yorkshire or Staffordshire origin; the second in the manner of John and William Yates, slip-cast with palmettes beneath a beaded arcade, with a band of foliage above, unmarked; the third of plain squat form with tapering cylindrical spout and figural knop, unmarked; the fourth in miniature, unmarked.
