In what Reynaud called the race against time in Scandinavia, the French and British had let the enemy get away first.....On 3rd May Reynaud received a fresh letter from Colonel de Gaulle, urging him once more to carry out the reorganisation of the military system at last" (from De Gaulle: The Rebel 1890-1944, by Jean Lacouture).

DICKENS CHARLES: (1812-1870) English novelist. An interesting, early A.L.S., Charles Dickens (a good example with paraph), four pages, 8vo, Doughty Street (King´s Cross, London), n.d., (´Wednesday morning´, 1838), to William John Bellew Archer (´Sir´). Dickens states that he has read his correspondent´s paper with great attention ´and have been very much pleased and greatly struck by it´, and returns it to Archer with a few suggestions that he hopes Archer will not object to complying with (´If so, I shall be happy to receive it again at your convenience´). Dickens continues to offer his advice, ´I would condense - greatly condense - the opening scene with the priest, so that the reader might come to the story. I would materially shorten the commencement of the story itself, and I would describe a little more forcibly the hero´s boldness when he sees the shade and rushes after it, and his fear when he finds it gone - it is a very natural idea, and would bear a few lines more´, further remarking ´I reserve my final suggestion for a fresh paragraph, because it is a sweeping one. I beg you to understand that I leave it entirely to yourself, and if you prefer the paper in its present shape, do not make the alteration an indispensable condition of its appearance in the magazine. But to my mind you would make the tale a much better one if you wholly omitted the visit of the priest.....to the castle.....adding a few words to the effect that our spirits commonly hold intercourse with those of the beloved dead in waking thoughts and dreams in which we see them (knowing them to be no longer of this world) without fear or pain, and that if there be any case in which strong and blameless sympathy could be supposed to bring the dead and living together, it would be such a case as you describe´. Dickens concludes his letter stating ´I have thrown out these crude remarks very hastily, and trust you will not consider them hypercritical or impertinent´. A letter of fine content for the literary advice Dickens offers to his correspondent, as well as his thoughts on communicating with the dead. Some light signs of age toning and former mounting to some edges of the pages, evidently a result of previous framing, otherwise about VGWilliam John Bellew Archer (1806-1872) English clergyman, Perpetual Curate of Churchill, Somerset 1840-69, British Chaplain at Worms 1851-59, and Vicar of Churchill 1870-72. The story which Archer had written was evidently submitted for consideration as a contribution to the literary magazine Bentley´s Miscellany of which Dickens was the first editor (1836-39).Charles Dickens lived with his wife, Catherine, at 48 Doughty Street (today the Charles Dickens Museum) from March 1837 until December 1839. They were joined there by Catherine´s sister, Mary Scott Hogarth, who assisted with household chores. Mary died suddenly, at the young age of 17, in May 1837 and her death had a deep effect on Dickens. The novelist considered Mary ´a close friend, an exceptional sister, a companion at home´ and greatly valued her input and feedback.Written in the year following Mary´s death, the present letter is of particular interest for the remarks Dickens makes on communicating with the dead. The novelist dreamt of his sister-in-law every night for months after her death and, in a letter of 1843, confided that Mary appeared to him day and night, ‘sometimes like a ghost, sometimes in the flesh, without bitterness, without regret, and always with the same air of quiet happiness´ - his words echoing those in the present letter, written some years earlier.

Rare in this form. Some very light, extremely minor age wear and two very small areas of paper loss to two corners, not affecting the chart, text or signature. About VG In the first half of 1799, at the time of preparing the present chart, Humboldt (accompanied by the botanist and physician Aime Bonpland) found himself in Madrid where he sought authorisation to travel to Spain's realms in the Americas. Receiving a positive response to his proposal, Humboldt was presented to King Charles IV and subsequently granted access to crown officials and written documentation on Spain's empire. Armed with authorisation from the King, Humboldt and Bonpland set sail on 5th June 1799 on their Spanish American expedition which would last until 1804. Humboldt's historic expedition is now regarded as having laid the foundation of the sciences of physical geography, plant geography and meteorology. On a personal level, the geographer's decades' long endeavour to publish the results of the expedition resulted not only in multiple volumes, but also drew him to the attention of the reading public with popular densely illustrated, condensed versions of his work in multiple languages. Importantly it also secured Humboldt's international reputation in scientific circles.

Nuam Roumestan was named: Gambetta, Cazot, neither this nor that. I tried to summarize in a kind of man, twenty years of observation on southern natures, mobile, all on the surface, in voices and gestures, natures of tenors and lawyers. ‘When I don’t speak, I don’t think’ says my character naively. Short bursts, fragile convictions, an unconscious egoism that makes Roumestan never say when speaking of a friend `I love him!’, but instead "He adores me, he would throw himself into the fire for me". With that, the desire to please, to seduce, the madness of promising, an almost oriental disregard for women, and an aptitude for lying that comes from an overflowing imagination, an incontinence of speech much more than from a false soul… To highlight the personage even more, I made him a powerful one, first a deputy, then a minister; I married him to a woman from the north… The book is the debate of these two natures, a frivolous husband, a serious wife...") Further, Daudet continues referring to Numa Roumestan and describes in detail the other characters of his novel, making a real summary of his novel, with very interesting comments about it, and before concluding states `Pour résumer votre article vous pouvez citer ces mots de Roumestan, dans l´ivresse du triomphe quand il est nommé ministre : "Ah! Le midi monte, le midi monte... Paris est à nous. Nous tenons tout. Il faut en prendre votre parti, messieurs. Pour la seconde fois les latins ont conquis la Gaule" Et au diable si ce n´est pas vrai´ (Translation: "To sum up your article you can quote these words from Roumestan, in the intoxication of triumph when he was appointed minister: "Ah! The South is rising, the South is rising... Paris is ours. We hold everything. You must accept it, gentlemen. For the second time the Latins have conquered Gaul." And to hell with it if it is not true.") A letter of very interesting content. Accompanied by the original 12mo envelope addressed in Daudet´s hand. VGPhilippe Gille (1830-1901) French Journalist.

But it wasn't supposed to be, because unfortunately I got the message much too late. You had long since become a happy husband' and continues to wish his correspondent and their wife the best of luck and hopes that they have been blessed with good weather since the wedding in Switzerland, adding 'I think that after the wedding, when you have returned home, there will be a lot of love and warmth in your home. However, the winter in England is quite harsh and cold, you can get cold feet even if your heart is warm. In this case I recommend the Norwegian wolfskin, which I took the liberty of sending at the same time as this letter'. Grieg concludes by thanking his friend for some cheese, 'I take the opportunity to express my heartfelt thanks for the Stilton. It is indeed marvellous. The Amsterdam museum marble referred to in the letter, also known as Tête qui regarde, today remains in the collection of the Stedelijk Museum. 1956 was a productive year for Alberto Giacometti; a fortnight earlier, he had finished representing France at the Venice Biennale (1 June - 1 October 1956) and, as the present letter demonstrates, he was working to ‘come up with something new’. Giacometti was thus plunging into what would later be called the ‘Yanaihara Crisis’, a very important artistic phase in his life. Isaku Yanaihara, a professor of French philosophy at Osaka University, met Giacometti in 1956. Giacometti was fascinated by Yanaihara's face and began a long series of paintings and sculptures of his likeness. He first produced an oil painting in October 1956 and numerous other drawings, paintings and sculptures followed. Yanaihara posed for the artist every summer in 1957, 1959, 1960 and 1961.

RIBBENTROP JOACHIM VON: (1893-1946) German Reich Minister of Foreign Affairs 1938-45. Arrested in June 1945, Ribbentrop was tried at the Nuremberg Trials and found guilty on all four indictments, including war crimes and crimes against humanity, convicted for his role in starting World War II and enabling the Holocaust. On 16th October 1946 he became the first of those sentenced to death to be hanged. Rare D.S., J v Ribbentrop, in pencil, two pages, folio, n.p. (Nuremberg), 25th January 1946, in German. The mimeograph document, completed in typescript, is an official International Military Tribunal application form for a Defendant's Application for Summons for Witness, addressed to the General Secretary, and requesting that William Lang, Archbishop of Canterbury, is summoned by the Tribunal to give evidence on Ribbentrop's behalf as the politician 'repeatedly told to the witness that the establishment of friendly relations between Germany and England was absolutely necessary', continuing to explain that, as the Archbishop was a member of the high English Clergy, he had ‘the possibility to spread and promote in church circles the idea of the necessity to establish such relations in order to secure peace for the peoples'. Signed by Ribbentrop at the conclusion of the first page and countersigned by Dr. Martin Horn, the defendant's counsel. Accompanied by an original unsigned English translation of the document. A document of extraordinary content. Both of the documents have been professionally restored, causing some very minor defects, the second page of the German text document silked, resulting in slightly less bold (although perfectly legible) text. File holes and small tears to the upper edges, not affecting the text or signatures, G, 2 William Cosmo Lang (1864-1945) Archbishop of Canterbury 1928-42. The Scottish Anglican Prelate, a strong supporter of appeasement, had in fact died suddenly on 5th December 1945, apparently unbeknown to Ribbentrop, who signed the present document over a month later. Provenance: The present document originates from the personal archives of Hans Werner, who in 1945, as the Director of Printing at the International Military Tribunal, was responsible for overseeing the printing of the Record of the Trial of Major War Criminals for the Nuremberg Trials. Published in 42 volumes in three different languages (English, French & German), the record of the trials was finally distributed in November 1949. Werner was the last member of over 100 editors and translators to stay with the IMT before finally returning the United States. The present documents were professionally restored in the early 1980s, the work being carried out under the supervision of the India Office in London.
