Fine 18th century violin by and labelled Carlo Antonio Testore Figlio Maggiore del fu Carlo Giuseppe in Contrada larga al segno Dell' Aquila, Milano 1757, also branded C.A.T. within a circle containing the double-eagle device to the inner back and on the button, the two piece back of very faint medium curl with similar wood to the sides and head, the table of a medium width grain widening to the flanks and the varnish of a reddish-brown colour on a golden ground, 14 1/16", 35.70cm, case Provenance; As part of the estate of Jazz violinist, the late composer and arranger Nina Trott there can be little doubt that this Testore has been touched by greatness. It was passed down to Nina by her first cousin (once removed) Hans Keller who later became head of classical music at the BBC and was renowned as one of the 20th century's most original thinkers on classical music. He was interned on the Isle of Man (The Hutchinson Camp) at the beginning of the second world war where he played in duets and string quartets with a group of legendary 20th century musicians including Oskar Adler, Otto Huttenbach, Norbert Brainin, Sigmund Nissell and Peter Schidof who went on to create the world famous Amadeus Quartet. Later in his role as music critic he became close friends and an informal accompanist with Igor

An extremely fine and important portrait (oil on canvas) of Count Matvey Ivanovitch Platoff (1751-1818) Chief of the Don Cossacks during the 1812 campaign of Napoleon I. This finely executed portrait, in three quarter length of Count Platoff wearing all his orders and medals was probably one of a number of leading Russian generals portraits which were commissioned by Tsar Alexander, from the English painter George Dawe (1781-1829) whom he appointed first painter to the Imperial Court. A fine work of outstanding historical value, in very fine condition 36” x 32” and bearing old label on the back which states “The Count Matvey Ivanovitch Platoff General Altman of the Don Cossacks 1751-1818. He distinguished himself during Napoleon’s Russian campaign fighting against the rearguard of Marshall Ney. Count Platoff entered Fontainbleau in 1814”, framed. Very Good Condition, canvas relined. An unusual all white metal powder flask, featuring 3 horse heads in ornamental oval on one side and scrolled panel on the other, top marked “G & J W Hawksley, Sheffield”, graduated nozzle 2½” to 3¼” Drams (similar to Riling No 1052), 8” overall. Good Condition Plate 61. Note: The three horse head flask is acknowledged to be a scarce pattern but this is the first time we have seen it in white metal.

The Honourable East India Company’s medal for Seringapatam, 1799, Soho Mint silver issue, diameter 48mm. Originally pierced and now fitted in a contemporary frame and lunettes below a swivel ring suspender. The frame engraved in script “Lieut. James Donald 94th S.B. Regt”, the riband with a 4 prong brooch. Good Extremely Fine, in a red leather covered presentation case commensurate with age (1 small area of lid damaged by sealing wax). Plate 2 Note: James Donald, born 12th July 1775, his first appointment into the services was at the age 19¾ on 16th April 1795 as Ensign 67th Foot. On 3rd June 1795 he was appointed Lieutenant Scots Brigade (94th Foot); Captain 6th February 1805; Paymaster Half Pay 25th December 1809. Wounded at the Battle of Argaum 29th November 1803.

A rare .73” first model Victoria cavalry carbine, 42” overall, twist barrel 26” with Tower proofs and ordnance inspector’s marks, standing rearsight, break off breech and swivel ramrod; back action lock engraved with crown over “VR/Tower 1838” (the first and possibly only year of production), and with traces of officially removed safety bolt; the heavily varnished walnut fullstock stamped on the left side of the butt with broad arrow over “WD” (post 1855), on the right side “I.C.R” (1st class reserve), and on the underside “J & W Field” (stockmakers), and with saddle bar and ring, the rear end of which screws directly into the stock; brass mounts include combined fore end plate and ramrod pipe, and trigger guard with scroll; every individual part, even the screw heads and the saddle ring, bearing the serial number “17”. A Brake First Observation Coach (Gladys Ella), 2x First Class Dining Cars (Dylys and Eagle) and 2x Third Class Dining Cars (Gyslen, Galleon) and a Brake Third Dining Car (Glenna). These detailed coaches have been converted from commercially produced G scale models and have been fitted with bogies to run on 32mm track. All the coaches have working lamps (powered by 5x rechargeable battery packs and one 9v battery. VGC.

An historic scratch built gauge 3 (2.5" gauge) live steam Atlantic type 4-4-2 tender locomotive ‘Charles Rous-Marten’, 214. Designed and built by William Briggs, with valve gear designed and built by LBSC (Lillian ‘Curly’ Lawrence). This well documented and historic spirit fired model is recorded as being the first 2.5" gauge locomotive to pull an adult passenger in 1922. The model features 2 inside cylinders, sprung suspension, sprung buffers, lubricators, hand water pump, steam whistle, pressure gauge etc, closed coupled with articulated 6-wheel tender. Finished in lined dark blue livery with maroon chassis and a miniature works plate which reads ‘Radford Works 1922’. Appears to be in reasonably good overall condition but does require restoration. Sold as a collector’s item only. Our estimate reflects this locomotive’s historic importance. £800-1200 Note: LBSC referred to her as ‘The Anticipator’ referring to the GNR locomotive built soon after with an articulated tender. She visited 121 Grange Road, Purley Oaks (Lawrence’s home) for a major overhaul in 1941. A photograph of model appears in the book “LBSC, His Life & Locomotives” by Brian Hollingsworth and reference to its historic importance is made in an article by LBSC in The Model Engineer, (11th December 1947, page 632).William Briggs was an engineer apprenticed at Brighton Works (L,B&SCR), before moving to the Daimler works in Radford, Coventry (which is where the reference to Radford Works originates from on the works plate) and then to the Napier factory in Manchester.
