(PMM).

Evolution.- Quetelet (Lambert Adolphe Jacques) A Treatise on Man and the development of his faculties, translated by Robert Knox, first edition in English, double column, 7 lithographed plates at end, ex-library copy with stamps, translator's name added in ink to title, small chip to lower corner of title, lightly browned throughout, library cloth, spine gilt, 8vo, Edinburgh, William and Robert Chambers, 1842.⁂ Rare copy of this important work. This edition contains a new preface by the author to defend his work from objections brought against it subsequent to the publication of the Paris edition. The publisher was the anonymous author of Vestiges of the Natural History of Creation, 1844. Quetelet was a Belgian astronomer, mathematician and sociologist, who founded and directed the Brussels Observatory. He developed what we today call the Body Mass Index (BMI), which was originally named the Quetelet Index.

Breitkopf for G.D. Walther, 1746.⁂ Rare copy of this first complete work on analytical trigonometry. Despite his mathematical achievements Oppel is better known for his contributions to mining and metallurgy. Having held a number of senior positions in the mines of the Ore Mountains he went on to be a founder of the Bergakademie Freiburg, a specialist mining school. It was the first of its kind and remains the oldest surviving institution in this field. The core of the school's collections are made up from Oppel's own, and include minerals, books and mining models.

The pagination jumps from 16 to 33, but the text is seemingly complete. In 1875 he published a Russian-Chuvash dictionary.

The book is considered one of the earliest publications to reproduce works by a contemporary artist, and led to an enhanced profile for the artist.

A rare and large BMC teddy bear 1907, With cinnamon mohair, deep orange and black glass eyes, pronounced muzzle with clipped tip, black stitched nose, mouth and claws, swivel head, jointed elongated limbs with felt pads, large rounded hump, inoperative squeaker and remains of black and gold woven label on right foot pad —28in. (71cm.) high (very minimal thinning and label now glued to pad) - the Bruin Manufacturing Company based in New York only produced bears from 1907 to 1909, it is believed that is this the first time this bear has appeared in such a large size. A PAIR OF WESTERN EUROPEAN MITTEN GAUNTLETS, CIRCA 1500, PROBABLY SPANISH each consisting of a long obtusely-pointed cuff closed at the inside of the wrist by brazing and formed at its upper edge with an angular outward turn (that of the right showing a slight loss), three metacarpal-plates, a shaped knuckle plate, two finger-plates decorated with longitudinal flutes of V-shaped section and a thumb-defence of three scales (the thumb plates and the last metacarpal plate of each restored, the inside of the cuff of each pierced with a later mounting-hole, the knuckle and finger-plates possibly associated, the first metacarpal-plate of the right gauntlet with a small welded repair, and the whole lightly patinated overall) 30.5 cm; 12 in (2) Provenance Probably the armoury of the Duke of Osuna and Infantado, sold over three sales in 1880, 1890 and 1896. Bashford Dean, New York French & Co., Inc. The armoury of the Dukes of the Infantado was the second most important armoury in the Iberian Peninsula after the Royal Armoury in Madrid. At one time it had no less than one hundred and sixty-two full armours many of which had been made for distinguished Royal and noble patrons. This collection was matched by an equally impressive array of edged weapons, firearms and also rarities such as a shield made from an elephant~s ear with a silver brim and another from a tortoiseshell. It also housed historic artefacts including the central gangplank from the Turkish flagship at the Battle of Lepanto presented by Don Juan of Austria to the 5th Duke. Despite a fire in 1702 much of the armoury survived into the late 19th century when it was dispersed. See Ramos 2013, pp. 1-16.
