* JOHN GUTHRIE SPENCE SMITH R.S.A. (SCOTTISH 1880 - 1951) BUTLEY CROSS, SOMERSET oil on panel, signed 27cm x 18.5cm Framed Note: John Guthrie Spence Smith was a Perth born artist with a distinctive approach to the landscapes and streetscapes of Scotland; Spence Smith was born in Perth 1880 and died in Edinburgh 1951. A childhood illness caused John to lose his hearing and his speech, a condition which no doubt enhanced his visual senses. The artist first came to notice in 1904 when his design was selected in a public competition for the cover of the Syllabus of the 1904 Perth Arts and Crafts Exhibition, by 1906 John was attending the RSA Life Drawing Classes in Edinburgh where he studied under Charles Hodge Mackie and Robert Burns and in 1906 won several prizes there. Spence Smith was a co-founder and member of the so-called Edinburgh Group. His later works such as shown here have strong influences of the Scottish Colourist movement. In 1977 a solo exhibition of John's work was mounted at Perth Museum and Art Gallery, as part of the 1977 Perth Festival of the Arts. In 1983 nine works by the artist were included in the first exhibition devoted to the Edinburgh Group at the City Art Centre Edinburgh. In 1986 an exhibition of his work was held at Perth Museum and Art Gallery and an accompanying booklet was also published to commemorate the 35th anniversary of his death. John Guthrie Spence Smith's work is to be found in a number of public collections including Kelvingrove, Paisley, Dundee, Aberdeen, Kirkcaldy, Fleming Collection and City Art Centre Edinburgh

* COLIN W BURNS (BRITISH b 1944 - ), HUNTSMAN IN A LANDSCAPE oil on board, signed 62cm x 91cm (24.5 x 35.8 inches) Framed Note: Born in 1944, Colin Burns grew up in a Norfolk seaside town. From the age of seven, he began to paint landscapes and sunsets and, as a nine year old, started winning art prizes at school. At the age of twelve, his parents moved to live in the middle of the country in a marshland farmhouse and his former town life was replaced with beautiful surroundings and the local wildlife. Colin Burns claims that this change of lifestyle was the greatest artistic influence he has experienced. He became more and more involved in painting and began observing the wonders of nature. At the age of sixteen he left school and qualified as an accountant and went to work at 'Birds Eye' in Great Yarmouth, painting in his spare time and finding an enthusiastic market for his local landscapes. Colin's paintings caught the eye of a well known Art Dealer - Ivor Hook of 'The Little Gallery' in Elm Hill, Norwich - and, through an introduction in 1976 to the renowned 'Tryon' Gallery in London specialising in wildlife by leading artists, Colin held his first exhibition in 1977. Having left 'Birds Eye' in 1978 to become a professional artist, painting both in oil and watercolour, concentrating on the East Anglian countryside and the birds that inhabit it, Colin Burns has now become one of the most ·successful artists of the day. The Highlands of Scotland and its moors with its unique Scottish wildlife are also beautifully portrayed along with London scenes and even Central Park in New York, such is the versatility of Colin's talent with the brush. However it is the East Anglian countryside for which he is regarded as a leading wildlife artist. The international Auction House 'Christies' now almost exclusively handles the sales of his new work through sales in London, New York and Scotland. Many of his paintings have been reproduced as greetings cards and prints and his original oils and watercolours are keenly sought after and included in important collections in Europe and the USA

Lot 139

A 1957 Jaguar 3.4 Mk I automatic saloon, registration number 682 UYB, British Racing green. William Lyons new compact Jaguar would become available in 1955 with the 2.4 litre XK engine, and was conceived to fill the model range between the XK sports cars and the big imposing Mk VII. The public would have to wait until 1957 for the larger 3.4 litre version to become available, and with its 210 bhp engine it was a match for any sports saloon on British roads, with a top speed of 120 mph. This 3.4 litre automatic example was originally supplied by Brown's Garage, Bath, to its first lucky owner, a Mr Filpin. The Jaguar sports its originally supplied colour scheme of British Racing green with a Suede green leather interior as stated on the accompanying Jaguar Heritage Certificate. The Jaguar has the desirable option of all round disc brakes and sits on colour coded wire wheels. The well appointed interior has recently been fitted with a new headlining. Jaguar's Mk I has seen a resurgence in popularity recently, with Mk Is taking to the race track in ever increasing numbers and a black example starring in the new Endeavour ITV detective series, prices have risen accordingly. The Jaguar is offered for auction with an accompanying history file. V5C, MOT and tax exempt See illustrations

Lot 177

A 1967 Jaguar 420, registration number PLB 847E, chassis number P1F2910BW, cream. Introduced in October 1966 and seen as being the ultimate in compact sporting saloons, the 420 was essentially a restyled S-Type answering some of the criticism levied at the latter's awkward styling. As the name suggested, all cars came with the XK 4.2 six cylinder engine feed by twin carburetors producing a claimed 245bhp. Inside, the wood trim of the S-Type was replaced with padded Rexine but high grade leather still featured heavily in what was a thoroughly British cockpit. This example was first registered in June 1967 to a transport haulier in Romford who subsequently sold the car after just three years to a hotel owner in Kensington. The car remained in his ownership for the next 39 years retiring to Bournemouth with its second keeper in 2007. In February 2009, the Jaguar was sold to a collector in West Wiltshire where it has remained to this day. It comes with a comprehensive service history from 1970-2001 and most MOT certificates from 1970 to the present day. RF60, V5C, MOT to June 2016 See illustration

Lot 148

A 1930 Rolls-Royce 20/25 hp Brooklands Sluggard special, registration number DXP 567, chassis number GSR50, engine number Q90, silver. GSR50 was despatched from Rolls-Royce in July 1930 in rolling chassis form to Carrosserie Janssen of Paris to have a Sedanca de Ville body fitted for its first owner Sr Juan Pardo in Spain. In 1937 Sr Pardo moved to London just before the outbreak of the civil war bringing the car with him. In 1940 GSR50 was registered to John Patterson in Paisley, Scotland for the Ministry of Transport, who had the chassis rebodied by Alpe & Saunders Ltd. Two further custodians are registered a Mr James Weir of Glasgow in 1952 and then Mr James Hugh also of Glasgow in 1956. The last known custodian before the car was taken off the road in 1967 was a Mr Thomas Crawley who had purchased the car in 1961. The striking current body which has been modelled on the 1911 Silver Ghost 'The Sluggard' (the streamlined Brookland special) which achieved a remarkable 101 mph at the Surrey racing circuit. The body is constructed in the traditional fashion of doped fabric over an ash frame, a technique which was perfected in early aircraft construction. At the same time further restoration works were carried out, including an engine rebuild, rewire and an overdrive unit was fitted to aid long distance touring. Since the restoration the previous owner used the car regularly for touring including a 1,000 mile tour of France. The accompanying history file contains photocopies of the build cards, receipts, previous logbooks, photographs and magazine articles on GRS50. This very imposing Rolls-Royce started easily and sounded in rude health on inspection for this catalogue, and with its distinctive styling it will certainly make the next custodian stand out from the crowd. RF60, V5C, MOT and tax exempt See illustrations Condition report Report by MW The Rolls Royce is running and driving, and has participated in a long distance rally of 1,000 miles through France, with the previous owner. The car is fitted with overdrive, which should enable more relaxed high speed driving. We have had a reasonable level of interest in the vehicle and the car comes from a deceased estate, so the seller is motivated to complete a sale.

Lot 149

A 1960 Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud II, registration number 6 DEJ, chassis number SWC34, Midnight blue. Introduced in 1959 the Cloud II incorporated the pure lines of the original design with the all new V8 aluminium engine and would remain in production until 1962 when the series III model became available. This example has covered a believed 82,000 from new with three recorded custodians. The first keeper retained the car until 1996, with a third deceased owner acquiring the Rolls-Royce earlier this year. The car is finished in a most becoming Midnight blue which was repainted approximately ten years ago at a cost of £13,000. The interior is presented in contrasting parchment leather with recently replaced carpets and dark blue over rugs. The headlining, wood veneers and door cards are equally in fine condition and all in all the interior is a pleasure to sit in. The accompanying history file contains evidence of regular and sympathetic maintenance, including ***a receipt from Gordon Dale (not Frank Dale)*** for nearly £7,000 on recommended preventative maintenance, other receipts from P & A Wood, other marque specialists, past MOTs and general correspondence. This low mileage example is offered from a deceased estate and should offer the next custodian a fine example of an elegant Rolls-Royce. V5C, MOT and tax exempt See illustrations

Lot 146

A 1961 left hand drive Volkswagen Beetle 1200, registration number 642 UYM, blue. The evergreen Beetle is as popular today with enthusiasts as when they first rolled off the Wolfsburg production line in 1938. This particular 1200 was imported and first registered in the UK in 1971 on registration number GBP 222J, the previous owner acquired the Beetle in 1979 and it had been dry stored until purchased by the vendor in November 2012. Since acquiring the Beetle the vendor has embarked on a sympathetic restoration incorporating as many original components as possible. For safety purposes he has replaced the entire hydraulic braking system, replaced the starter motor, thoroughly recommissioned the engine, and has reinstated the stale air cooling system. The charming Beetle is fitted with an original VW ski rack with period skis. The interior is serviceable but the vendor advises us this is one area of the car which could be improved as time and funds allow. V5C, MOT to September 2016 See illustration

Lot 120

A 1953 Austin Healey 100, registration number TDD 47, chassis number BN1 1140267, Healey Ice blue. The sensational new Austin Healey 100 caused a major stir when it was debuted at the 1952 London Motor Show. The all new Healey sports car was intended to be a low cost high performance sports car aimed squarely at the US market. The 100 sourced its major components from the Austin Atlantic saloon including the 2660cc four cylinder engine tuned to 90 bhp which when installed in the lighter streamlined Healey resulted in a genuine 100 mph plus sports car. It was equipped with a four speed gearbox with the bottom gear blanked off which with the overdrive gave five usable gear ratios. The Healey 100 is a muscular sports car for the purest and its performance was not bettered by its successor the 100/6 and was only surpassed when the Healey 3000 became available in 1959. This particular example has been in the vendor's possession for a remarkable 41 years. The car was registered on 1st September 1953 and is arguably finished in the best colour combination of Ice blue with a dark blue interior, the same colour combination as it left the factory. It sits on recently replaced chrome wire wheels with correct style tyres and has a desirable Sebring louvered bonnet fitted. We are advised by the client that he had the Healey resprayed in 1976 and the car still looks bright. Recent expenditure includes the fitting of an aluminium fuel tank and a general health check at a Healey specialist. With a believed genuine 69,000 miles on the odometer, this rare early chassis number Healey 100 is eligible for some of the world's most prestigious sporting events including the Mille Miglia, Le Mans Classic and Tour Auto to name but a few. Now coming to the market for the first time in over four decades this extremely original low mileage Healey is certainly a must for any serious collection. Lot 130

A 1955 Austin A90 Westminster historic FIA rally car, registration number PSV 545, black. This A90 has formed part of a collection of rally cars. It was discovered as a barn find and the vendor informs us that it was exchanged for fabricating a trials sump guard. The Austin has been in the vendor's possession for over 20 years and was previously registered FVV 1344. The A90 was restored to compete in the 1994 Monte Carlo Challenge and was initially rebuilt to original specification apart from twin 1½ SU carburettors, seat belts, fog lights, a Halda trip meter and snow tyres. On its first Monte the Austin as described by the vendor had lost all brakes by the time it had reached Beaune in France but still managed to finish a very creditable and impressive 20th overall. By the time the Austin was ready for its second Monte, the car had been extensively uprated. It now featured a three litre engine from a Wolseley 110, four speed floor change gearbox from an Austin Princess, Wolseley 110 front disc brakes and the ability to fit snow chains to the rear wheels. The Austin has been campaigned in several other rallies, including LeJog finishing 7th overall on one occasion. The Austin is offered for auction with a comprehensive spares package including a spare 2600cc engine, two gearboxes, rear wheels with snow chains and a complete set of glass. The accompanying history file contains numerous receipts, handbooks, past MOTs and expired FIA documents. V5C, MOT and tax exempt See illustration

Lot 105

A 1953 Austin K9 Loadstar cattle lorry, brown. This rare and very original K9 Loadstar has resided in the same Somerset village of Middlezoy since its first registration. Both the first and current owner are farmers, who used the lorry to transport cattle to Bridgwater Market. The lorry has been in dry storage for a good number of years, but has been started and moved on a regular basis and it certainly sounded in rude health on our inspection for the catalogue photographs. Unfortunately the logbook has been lost, but the vendor has contacted Somerset County Archives and acquired relevant documentation from them which should enable the next owner to register the lorry with its original registration. No V5C, MOT and tax exempt See illustrations

Lot 124

Lot 122

A 1955 Ford Thames E83W 10 CWT van, registration number HPR 569, green over black. This charming light commercial was purchased by the vendor from Tites Scrap Yard near Sherborne, Dorset in approximately 1977. When purchased it was signwritten in the livery of Plumbheat Ltd 122 South Street Bridport. A full restoration was carried out over the next six years with a full length sunroof, detachable side signboards and was converted to 12V electrics. Its first trip was to complete the London to Brighton commercial vehicle run which was completed from its home in South Petherton in Somerset up to London and from there to Brighton and back again all in one day. The van has attended numerous classic car events in the South West of England and has always been admired. The vendor advises us that the van has seen very little mileage in the last ten years, starts and runs well and has had a reconditioned gearbox supplied by the Ford Sidevalve Owners Club. The van is offered for auction with an accompanying history file with photographs, expired MOTs, SORNs and general correspondence. V5C, MOT and tax exempt See illustrations

There have been four subsequent changes of title, including his widow and the vendor, who has owned the car once before. Lot 464

Devonian Period, 417-354 million years BP. A group of three trilobites comprising a Devonian specimen of Greenops boothi accompanied by a Gregory, Bottley, and Lloyd label reading: 'DEVONIAN, Greenops boothi, Hamilton, New York, USA', and two unidentified trilobites in shale, all in old white card trays. From a historic ‘Victorian Museum’ collection; from the stock of Gregory, Bottley & Lloyd (1981-2014); formerly with Gregory, Bottley & Co. (1932-1981) and previously with J. R. Gregory & Co. (1898-1932); originally in the collection of the famous James Reynolds Gregory (1858-1898"). This item is part of a historic collection of fossils and minerals which has recently been reviewed by leading geological expert Dr. Ronald Bonewitz. Cf. Bonewitz, Dr. Ronald Louis Smithsonian Rock and Gem, (2008), p.340. James Reynolds Gregory (1832-1899) was one of the principle London mineral and fossil dealers during the second half of the 19th century. The company he founded was one of the longest surviving geological suppliers in the world, second only to Kranz of Germany. In 1858 James Gregory established his business selling polished stones, minerals and fossils from premises in King William Street. A few years later he moved to premises in Golden Square, Soho. He won prize medals at exhibitions in Paris (1867), Sydney (1879) and London (1862 and 1883"). He also formed a superb collection of meteorites, which was later sold by his sons to the Natural History Museum, London. On the death of his father in 1899 Albert Gregory took over the business, dealing from premises in Kensington, then 30 Old Church Street in Chelsea. He eventually sold the company in 1932 to Percy Bottley, and after his death in 1982 the premises were sold. The company was then acquired by Brian Lloyd who had started the Natural History sales at Sotheby's before dealing from his own premises in Pall Mall. Gregory, Bottley & Lloyd, as it became known, traded from Ricket Street and later Seagrave Road in Fulham. In 2008 the business and all of the stock and Victorian cabinets were moved out of London to Walmer in Kent. On the eventual retirement of Brian and Mary Lloyd in 2014, with none of their family interested in taking over the business, the stock was sold and is now dispersed. Trilobites are a well-known fossil group of extinct marine arthropods and form one of the earliest known groups of arthropods. The trilobites were among the most successful of all early animals, roaming the oceans for over 270 million years. Among other distinctions, they are the the first known animals to develop eyes. 391 grams total, 45mm-10.5cm (1 3/4 - 4 1/4"). [3, No Reserve] Fine condition.
