[Broadside] The Beginning, Progress and End of Man, the printed sheet with five sets of cut flaps, each with woodcut images, the flaps opening to reveal a second series of five images beneath, third edition, hand-coloured, possibly later, heavily creased, some paper loss to folds, affecting the first and second verse substantially, the sixth verse with staining and minor loss of text, 390mm x 305mm, [London]: Printed for J. Deacon at the Angel in Gilt-Spur-Street, [c.1688-89] [ESTC R175526] Provenance: Thomas Pengelly (1675-1730), Lord Chief Justice, thence by descent. RARE. First published during the Civil War, this text is one of the earliest 'turn-up' religious texts. A 1650 example in the British Library [669.f.15.(34)] would appear to be smaller. A similar example to the one offered here may be found in the Bodleian Library, under the Anthony Wood Collection. [Wood 25E (10)]. No other coloured examples are known.

They had three sons, William I (b.1743), Charles (b.1744) and Frederick (b.1747). Charles distinguished himself with a military career in Denmark, rising to become Commander of the Royal Guard, Governor-General of Norway and Governor of Schleswig-Holstein. He died in 1836 of natural causes.

Volume Six with a sheet affixed to the front pastedown, inscribed 'To Tommy from Winston 1.1.54', the remaining volumes with facsimile signatures similarly pasted, 'With all good wishes from Winston S. Churchill [1948]'. Writing to Nigel Nicolson in 1966, Alan Lascelles made clear he was 'devoted to Winston', as his detailed war-time diaries attest. On 30 May, 1944, he writes, 'Winston, lunching with the King today, revealed that he proposed to watch the opening of 'Overlord' from one of the bombarding cruisers, and when the King said he would do ditto, did not (according to the King) discourage him. This will never do; but I think I shook the King by asking him whether he thought the project would be quite fair to the Queen; and whether he was prepared to face the possibility of having to advise Princess Elizabeth on the choice of her first Prime Minister, in the event of her father and Winston being sent to the bottom of the English Channel.' And the following day, 'I persuaded the King, without much difficulty, that it would be wrong, from many points of view, for either him or Winston to carry out their projected 'Overlord' jaunt. He bade me take a letter from himself to Winston, written in his own hand, to 10 Downing Street - which I did after dinner, and handed it over to John Martin. I found that Winston, who is just like a naughty child when he starts planning an escapade, has said nothing about this one to Martin, who was much relieved to hear that the King was trying to deter him.'

Front free-endpaper inscribed, 'To Sir Alan Lascelles with all good wishes, B.L. Montgomery F.M., Berlin 6-1-46'. On June 16th, 1944, Lascelles travelled with George VI to visit Field-Marshall Montgomery at his headquarters near Creully, France. In his diary, Lascelles notes, 'Here, after a visit to his famous caravan, we lunched - the King, Monty, Dempsey (GOC Second Army), Kit Dawnay, Ramsay, two ADCs and myself; a good luncheon, with genuine Camembert cheeses - a thing we'd not seen in London since 1940. The King then held a small investiture, elaborately staged by Monty, who made a speech about each investee (whose decorations, by the way, I had been carting about in a pouch ever since we had left London).' PRESENTATION COPIES. Front free-endpapers inscribed, 'Tommy from Harold' (volume 1), 'To Tommy, from Harold, September 1967' (volume 2) and 'To Tommy from Nigel, with many thanks, Sissinghurst, July 1968' (volume 3). In January 1967, Nigel Nicolson sent Alan Lascelles pages from his father's diaries, covering the period when Harold was writing his life of King George V and enquiring, 'Has sufficient time elapsed for part of the truth to be publicly told?'. As a lifelong friend of Harold Nicolson, Lascelles' reply was candid, 'So if I advise you to cut out all the remaining references to KG V and his family, please believe that I do so primarily in Harold's own interest and only secondarily in that of his victims. King George V: His Life and Reign is unquestionably Harold's magnum opus… But a premature revelation of H's inner distaste for the personality of the King (…) might well give people the idea that the book was a false, put-up job…'. On 16 May 1968, Lascelles was sent by the Queen as her representative to the memorial service for Harold Nicholson at St. James's, Piccadilly.
