Bed Linen. A pair of 19th century French linen sheets, 1853 & 1892, 2 ecru linen sheets, each hand-woven from hand-spun yarn, the first with hand-stitched hems and central join, hand-embroidered in cross-stitch in red thread to one corner 'GJ 1853', 230 x 189cm (90.5 x 74.5 ins), the second with machine-stitched hems and hand-stitched central join, one corner hand-worked in red cross-stitch 'CJ 6 1892', some discolouration, large machined patch, 240 x 184cm (94.5 x 72.5ins) Qty: (2)Footnote: Two pieces of early French linen of exceptional quality, of the sort that is becoming increasingly difficult to find. Each sheet is hand-woven from yarn that was hand-spun, giving a quality of texture which can never be reproduced via commercial means, and producing a final product which is amazingly durable. The hand-stitched centre seams are a particular sign of early sheets, as hand-woven fabrics were produced in much narrower widths than could be produced on wide machine looms. These sheets will have been washed many times, and are therefore unsusceptible to shrinking, and they can be beautifully enhanced using vegetable dyes. Each farm in France had its own field of flax, and so these sheets are almost certain to have been spun and woven on the site where the raw material was grown. Such linen formed an important part of a young girl's trousseau, and hence would often be embroidered with the initials of the bride and her betrothed. More rarely pieces of linen would be dated, as here.

A SAPPHIRE-BLUE GLASS 'INTEGRAL DISH' SNUFF BOTTLE, 18TH CENTURYChina. The transparent bottle of rectangular form, with mask handles in the shape of mythical beasts on both narrow sides, the wider sides with integrated snuff dishes. Provenance: From the private collection of Tuyet Nguyet and Stephen Markbreiter. Tuyet Nguyet was the founder and chief editor of Arts of Asia. She married Stephen Markbreiter, an English architect, in 1959 and moved to Hong Kong to work as a journalist. Arts of Asia's first regular edition appeared in 1971. In the magazine, Nguyet sought to combine authoritative content from major experts with detailed coverage of the Asian art market. Tuyet Nguyet was an early member of The International Chinese Snuff Bottle Society, attending her first convention in 1973, and was later elected as an honorary member. Condition: Good condition with wear, surface scratches and minor nibbling to lip and mask handles. Stopper: Blue glass cabochon, carved spoon Weight: 94 g Dimensions: Height including stopper 80 mm. Diameter neck 22 mm and mouth 11 mm.Circular panels framed by a raised border were a feature of early snuff bottle production, as we know from a Yongzheng-marked turquoise bottle in the Susan Ault Collection (Snuff Bottles of the Ch'ing Dynasty, p. 59, no. 38). The form is intriguing, particularly in light of the controversy over the evolution of the snuff dish. Both sides are distinctly concave and deliberately dished, and there seems no decorative reason for such a feature. Their creation would have required additional manipulation by the craftsman, with no discernible aesthetic advantage. In this case, at least, we may safely assume the intention of the maker to have been the provision of a bottle with integral, functional snuff dishes.Auction result comparison: Compare with a related glass snuff bottle at Bonhams Hong Kong in Fine Chinese Art on 28 November 2011, lot 68, sold for HKD 212,500.

After his retirement he became also known as the owner, together with his wife Judith, of the world-famous 'Crayola House' on the edge of Lake Michigan, which was designed by Margaret McCurry. The Bentleys were lifelong collectors of folk art, American furniture, and Asian works of art.Condition: Overall well preserved and commensurate with age, presenting nicely with extensive wear, crackle and flaking to lacquer, multiple layers of pigments of various dating, minor old repairs and touchups, small losses here and there, minor structural fissures, old traces of use, and weathering. Fine naturally grown patina.Weight: 4,540 gDimensions: Height 35 cm (excl. stand) and 52 cm (incl. stand)Mounted on an associated wood stand. (2)Naturalistic and realistic qualities in Buddhist sculpture were particularly sought-after during the Song dynasty. The 'dry lacquer' technique, as seen on the present head, lends itself to expressive sculpture, and was capable of producing religious statues and portrayals with unprecedented levels of realism that no other material or technique could evoke. The dry lacquer process involved first sculpting the figure in clay above a wooden model. Patches of lacquered hemp were then pasted onto the clay. These were then covered with further lacquer layers, which could be sculpted in greater detail and carved to give expressive qualities. Finally the surface was painted in polychrome pigments. In some examples, the original construction of wood and clay were hollowed out and removed after completion, leaving only the fragile skin of hemp and lacquer. Others, such as the present lot, were left to retain their wooden body. The number of extant Song dynasty religious images made in this complex and sophisticated technique is relatively low, largely due to the time-consuming and demanding production process as well the vulnerability of the lacquer material.Auction result comparison: Compare a closely related dry-lacquered head, also dated to the Southern Song dynasty but slightly smaller (28 cm) and with the wood core removed to leave only the hollow head, at Sotheby's New York in Junkunc: Chinese Buddhist Sculpture on 12 September 2018, lot 18, sold for USD 87,500. Paul M. A MUGHAL-STYLE 'HORSE HEAD' DAGGER HILTIndia, 18th century. The handle is finely carved from pale-green aventurine, naturalistically rendered in the form of a horse's head with the ears facing back, the nostrils flared and the mouth slightly open. The intricately incised mane falls gracefully down on one side of the neck.Provenance: From a private collection in New York, USA.Condition: Good condition with old wear and minuscule nicks. The horse head with several natural fissures, some of which have developed into small hairline cracks over time. Naturally grown patina overall, the polish of a fine, silky-matt feel.Weight: 208 gDimensions: Height 13 cm, width 7 cmFitted box with the initial 'A', finely carved in high relief and openwork from white jade, dating to the first half of the 20th century. (2)Horse-head dagger hilts were first depicted in paintings of the Padshahnama (Chronicle of the King of the World), about 1635, a manuscript documenting the reign of the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan (r. 1628-58). As horses were highly prized in Mughal culture, it is not surprising that horse-head daggers were the most popular subject for zoomorphic hilts for several centuries.Expert's note: While many of these hilts are carved from Jade, Aventurine was both a highly prized and extremely rare material at the time, and a hilt carved from this fine material must consequently be regarded as rare. Also note the distinct glimmer within the translucent stone, which makes this mineral unique.Auction result comparison: Compare a Mughal 'horse head' dagger hilt, also dated to the 18th century, at Sotheby's London in Art of the Islamic World on 19th October 2016, Lot 253, bought in at an estimate of GBP 18,000-25,000. Art of the Islamic World 2016年10月19日 Lot 253, 估價GBP 18,000-25,000。

Vietnamese historians attribute it to the states of Văn Lang and Âu Lạc. Its influence spread to other parts of Southeast Asia, including Maritime Southeast Asia, throughout the first millennium BC. The culture long remained a mystery to western archaeologists, and it was known only through its bronze objects, many of which were taken from burial sites. AN EMERALD-GREEN AND WHITE 'PINES IN THE SNOW' JADEITE SNUFF BOTTLE, 1770-1850China. Smoothly polished and well hollowed, the flattened rectangular body rising from a short oval foot to a cylindrical neck. The semi-translucent icy white stone with vivid emerald-green inclusions, creating the legendary 'pine trees in the snow' effect.Provenance: From a UK private collection, acquired from Robert Kleiner & Co. Ltd., London. A copy of the original invoice dated 20 November 2000 and confirming the dating and description above accompanies this lot. Robert Kleiner (1948-2014) was an important expert on and dealer of Chinese snuff bottles, beginning his long career at Sotheby's Chinese Art department in London. Along with Hugh Moss and Bob Hall, Robert Kleiner became a key advisor to the Mary and George Bloch collection, and it was Robert who wrote and produced the very first catalog of their bottles. Condition: Excellent condition with only minor wear and tiny nibbles to neck. With a fine, unctuous feel overall. The Chinese have traditionally taken a subjective and often poetic approach to the appreciation of art, including towards the materials with which they work. The name given to jadeite is feicui and refers to the brilliance of a kingfisher's plumage. Jadeite, itself, however, does not appear in exactly the colors of the feathers or, indeed, with their iridescence. The type of jadeite shown in the present example is known as 'pine trees in the snow' since the markings resemble the idea of a pine tree-filled snowy landscape. Stopper: Green glass and carved spoon Weight: 86.7 g Dimensions: Height including stopper 65 mm. Diameter neck 18 mm and mouth 6 mm. According to a myth, Paiwan ancestors lived in a location on Dawu mountain (Tawushan) that was called Paiwan, where heaven was said to exist. Paiwan people have spread out from this location, so the name of the original place was assumed as their group name. According to some group members, Paiwan also means 'human being'.The social system of the Paiwan consists of three levels: the nobility (aristocrats and landowners), the second-rank nobility, and the ordinary people. Only members of the first rank have the privilege of owning works bearing the sacred motifs of the serpent or the human figure, both considered as representing ancestors. Sculpture is the privileged way for Paiwan aristocrats to distinguish their houses, perceived as the incarnation of the social status, authority, privileges, and existence of a fundamental entity of society.Literature comparison: Compare a related Paiwan carved wood architectural ornament, 23 by 80 cm, also dated 19th to early 20th century, in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, accession number 1987.453.4.Auction result comparison: Compare a related Paiwan carved wood container lid, 45.1 cm diameter, at Sotheby's New York in Art of Africa, Oceania, and the Americas on 18 May 2021, lot 35, sold for USD 37,800. Art of Africa, Oceania, and the Americas 2021年5月18日 lot 35, 售價USD 37,800。

A RARE LACQUER-GILT BRONZE FIGURE OF AN ARHAT, AYUTTHAYA PERIODThailand, 16th-17th century. Heavily cast seated in dhyanasana with his right hand lowered in bhumisparsa mudra and the left resting on his lap and holding a small vessel, wearing a monastic robe draped over the left shoulder, the serene face with heavy-lidded eyes below elegantly arched brows, flanked by long pendulous earlobes, the hair arranged in tight curls.Provenance: Collection of Peter Salomon. Peter Salomon (1942-2020) was a Danish designer who developed a passion for Asian art at a young age. He purchased his first Buddhist figure at the age of 12 with his own pocket money. Planning to sell antiques for a living, he traveled to London when he was 19 and purchased many objects around Portobello Road, which he found very hard to part with, however. In the end, Salomon pursued a different career path which was nonetheless inspired by his early passion, and began to design decorative objects himself, while his love for Asian and Buddhist art lasted his entire life.Condition: Good condition, as expected and commensurate with age, with wear and casting flaws, minor losses, small nicks, warping, dents, few structural cracks, extensive wear and flaking to lacquer gilding. Fine, naturally grown patina with a good, unctuous feel overall.Weight: 52.9 kg Dimensions: Height 67 cmThis rare bronze sculpture of an arhat depicts the monk seated in meditation with his right hand extending towards the ground to call on the Earth to bear witness to his enlightenment. An arhat in Theravada Buddhism, which predominates throughout Southeast Asia, represents the spiritual paradigm for ordinary beings to emulate. The highest spiritual goal for followers of Theravada Buddhism is to perfect Shakyamuni's teachings over many lifetimes, which results in becoming an arhat: an enlightened being freed from the cycle of rebirth (parinirvana).Paintings and sculptures of arhats frequent Thai temples. Their depiction largely imitates Buddha images, though without possessing certain key physical characteristics (lakshana) that distinguish Buddha as a supernatural being. As represented in this sculpture, these are the absence of an ushnisha and the orientation of the arhat's left hand. Rather than the back of the hand resting in his lap, it is turned frontally toward the viewer.Auction result comparison: Compare a related copper alloy figure of an arhat, 83 cm high, also dated 16th-17th century, at Bonhams New York in Indian, Himalayan & Southeast Asian Art on 23 September 2020, lot 638, sold for USD 47,575.

Glass bottles of this period were almost certainly made within the Imperial Glassworks set up in 1696 by the Jesuits under Kilian Stumpf, to cater to the Imperial fascination with glass, which continued throughout the 18th century. The technique of introducing gold splashes into glass was invented by the glass makers of Murano. This involved dissolving a silicate of cuprous oxide into the molten glass matrix, which converts on cooling to a partly metallic state.1700-1770年黑地灑金琉璃鼻烟壺中國,可能爲北京御用工坊製作。 Robert Kleiner & Co. A BLUE AND WHITE 'MUSICIANS' DISH, KANGXI PERIODChina, 1662-1722. The shallow rounded sides rising from a short tapered foot to a wide everted rim, the broad floor filled with Daoist musicians and their attendants in the shade of a pine tree at a hillside, surrounded by a band of lotus flowers and Daoist emblems to the short cavetto, the gently sloping wide rim with additional Daoist figures framed within reserves against a geometric patterned ground.Provenance: Belgian trade, by repute from a local private collection.Condition: Fine condition with minor old wear and firing flaws, the rim with two hairlines, minuscule nicks to the foot.Weight: 1,412 g Dimensions: Diameter 39.5 cmIt is interesting to note that the Chinese musical tradition remained quite stable throughout the Qing dynasty before the New Culture Movement, as evidenced by the many similarities between the painting on the present dish and the musicians pictured in an old photograph taken in Shanghai during the 1860s (figure 1). The first major and well-documented flowering of Chinese music was for the qin during the Tang dynasty (618-907 AD), although this instrument is known to have been played already since before the Han period. Through succeeding dynasties over thousands of years, Chinese musicians developed a large assortment of different instruments and playing styles, including court, folk, and religious music as well as instrumental, opera, storytelling, and many other kinds. A wide variety of these instruments, such as guzheng and dizi, are indigenous, although many popular traditional musical instruments were introduced from Central Asia, such as the erhu and pipa. Musical instruments were traditionally classified into eight categories known as bayin. Traditional music in China is played on solo instruments or in small ensembles of plucked and bowed stringed instruments, flutes, and various cymbals, gongs, and drums. The scale is pentatonic. Bamboo pipes and qin are among the oldest known musical instruments from China.
