"THE FLAPPER" Unique set of Irish Edwardian Children's Periodicals Shaw Family: "The Flapper" was a monthly magazine, bound in four volumes, compiled, edited, handwritten and illustrated by the six children of Sir Frederick and Lady Shaw of Bushy Park, Terenure, Co. Dublin. A "flapper" in this sense is a young bird that tests its wings before leaving the nest. The first number appeared in January 1904 and it continued at intervals through to the end of 1910. The children's father was Sir Frederick William Shaw, 5th Bart, a professional soldier who had served with distinction in the Boer War. In 1907 he was appointed Honorary Colonel commanding the 5th Battalion, Royal Dublin Fusiliers. Their mother Eleanor Hester was the daughter of Major F.H. de Vere of the Royal Engineers. George Bernard Shaw was a distant cousin. The six children were Annie (Sub-Editor), Mary ("Newsmonger"), Grace (Editor), Robert, Eily and Frederick, aged between seventeen and eight when the magazine started. Their first cousin Horace de Vere Cole, later an active socialist and Fabian but best known as a practical joker, was a frequent guest - his "state visit" to Cambridge disguised as the uncle of the Sultan of Zanzibar is recounted in some detail (March 1905). Robert Lloyd Praeger and his wife, neighbours living in Rathgar, make occasional appearances. The contents of the magazine include stories, poems, family news (presented as if the children were soldiers based in Mafeking) - all composed by the children and their associates, though Robert was away at his public school (Harrow) for much of the year. Family, visitors, staff and animals appear frequently, and the youngest child Freddie is occasionally the butt of his siblings' humour. The work of extracting the material from wayward contributors, co-ordinating and presenting it, placed quite a heavy burden on the teenage editor- as she frequently reminds her readers. As the years pass, the children mature. Robert obtains a place at Woolwich Academy and writes solemnly on military matters, as does his sister Annie. Freddie goes to prep school at Laleham in Surrey and then graduates to Harrow. There are accounts of dances, race meetings, polo matches and army manoeuvres. The final issue concludes with Annie's wedding on 20 December 1910. Each issue is provided with a variety of illustrations, mostly by the children and their mother; many are of Irish topographical interest. A photograph of the family and their dogs appears in the issue for July 1907. An account of a walking tour in Switzerland in August 1905 is enlivened with many photographs and diagrams. There are cartoons of military and political life. The concept shows how isolated children of the Big House were a hundred years ago, how closely they relied upon each other for company, and the determination with which they created their own world. Robert and Freddy both became professional soldiers and served with distinction in the two world wars. Freddy married, had a son and a daughter, and was killed in a car crash in 1945. Annie and Grace married; Mary and Eily did not. Robert succeeded to the baronetcy, sold Bushy Park House and demesne to Dublin Corporation, and died in 1969, the last of his generation. (1)
Eulalie Banks, Illustrator, Muralist & Writer, 1895 - 1999 Collection of Splendid Watercolour Drawings Watercolours: Banks (E.M.) 'Eulalie' An attractive collection of approx. 36 watercolour drawings, mostly children & humanized animals, rabbits, dogs, foxes, and birds. The collection contains single cards, large and small, greeting cards (some folding with illustrated interiors), the largest is approx. 24.5cms x 19.5cms (9 1/2" x 7 1/2"), smallest 7.5cms x 6cms (3" x 2 1/2"), and most are lightly mounted on card, all in very fine condition. As a coll., w.a.f. * Eulalie Banks illustrated over 50 children's books during her long lifetime. She was born in Brockley, south-east London, in 1895, she was the youngest of nine. The large family garden with its two greenhouses provided many memories to draw on over the years: her illustrations for Helen Bannerman's classic The Story of Little Black Sambo in 1926 show palm trees mixed with pine against a very British-looking stone cottage in the background. By the age of 12, she was designing colourful Christmas cards for sale to friends. Two years later, she began illustrating the children's page in a women's magazine. Her first picture book, Bobby in Bubbleland (1913), was published when she was only 18. Sadly, the plates for this and other early books were destroyed during Zeppelin raids over London. Her speciality was the humanized animal, neatly dressed, standing on two feet and as often as not grinning fit to burst. Her signature was simply "Eulalie," accompanied by a little mouse wearing blue velvet trousers and an artist's smock. Years later, a child observing this trademark in one of the murals she was working on announced "Look there's Mickey Mouse!" The artist, who painted directly on to existing plaster surfaces with oil pigments, immediately wiped this detail out. As she put it herself in a newspaper interview, "I was doing my mouse when Walt Disney was in diapers." In fact, there was much in common with Disney in the instant sentiment found in Eulalie's art. In fact, the largest collection of her original works is held by the Walt Disney Studios. Her final days were spent at the Beverly Health and Rehabilitation Centre in Sherman Oaks. But even at the age of 102 she was still signing books at meetings held in her honour. She died on 12 November 1999.

PUBLICATIONS AND PAPERS OF “SCEILG” [O'Kelly (J.J.)] Sceilg, Books, articles and papers of the Irish-language and republican activist, author and journalist John Joseph O'Kelly, known as Sceilg (1872-1957). (1) Of particular interest is a small notebook in O'Kelly's hand containing daily entries for the period October 1915 to March 1916. There are detailed comments on the progress of the Great War, the activities and speeches of the Irish Party, and events in Ireland. (2) Several books by or connected with O'Kelly, some with dedications, and seven of O'Kelly's shorter works, including his Irish-language play Cúroí with his own notes. Also the manuscript of the English-language version of Cúroí, acts I-III, with many notes by O'Kelly. (3) Bound copy of The Catholic Bulletin for the year 1916. O'Kelly was editor of the periodical from 1911-1922 and exercised great skill in dodging the British censor after the Easter Rising in order to promote awareness of the lives of the 1916 leaders. However, his editorial for the issue May/June was banned by the censor - this is O'Kelly's own copy containing the forbidden editorial. (4)) Bound volume containing seven poems in manuscript by O'Kelly - “The Deathless Cathal Brugha”, “Up Kerry: A rallying song for the Kerry team” etc. (5) Folder containing copies of articles and speeches by O'Kelly: the issue of The Catholic Bulletin for May/June 1916 minus the censored editorial; his articles on Arthur Griffith, Cathal Brugha and other leaders; his lecture “Partition” delivered on the 21st anniversary of the meeting of the First Dáil; his oration at the graveside of Fr Michael O'Flanagan, 1942. (6) Folder containing a file on the protest of Waterville anglers in 1933 against traps laid across the river by James W. Butler of Waterville House, with a MS map of Lough Currane; O'Kelly's review of Richard Hayes's Old Irish Links with France; and letters of condolence written on O'Kelly's death in 1957. As a collection, books and manuscripts, w.a.f. (1)

Manuscript Novels by Charles Lever [Lever (Charles)] Substantial Manuscripts of two novels by Charles Lever. The title pages, unfortunately, are missing. One begins with a list of contents; there are 38 chapters, the first being entitled "A Mountain Hare". The other novel lacks the first 9 pages and continues to p. 440. Both works contain extensive annotations and corrections. Charles Lever (1806-1872) was the author of an apparently unending stream of Irish novels, many of which were best sellers. His earlier works are "Victorian picaresque" stories of rumbustious Irish characters, some of whose escapades may well have been modelled on his own equally eventful life. The horrors of the cholera epidemic of 1832 and the Great Famine sobered him up, and some of his later works reflect the miseries of the Irish peasantry under an unjust landlord system. Though only second generation Irish, he remained loyal to Ireland for most of his subject matter. Scorned by the leaders of the Gaelic Revival who perceived him as having milked the character of the stage Irishman to advance his career, Lever is now coming to be recognised as a gifted and multi-faceted writer worthy of serious study. Provenance: These manuscripts were found among the papers of Edmund Downey (1856-1937), author of Charles Lever: His Life and Letters (2 vols, 1906), and were evidently used by Downey when compiling his work. There are also a few loose pages in Lever's hand, some cuttings with annotations by Downey from The Dublin University Magazine which Lever edited, notes by Downey on short stories by Lever, and other notes by Downey and M. Geary. As manuscripts, w.a.f.. Extremely Rare. · The above manuscripts are a really exciting discovery to add to his already known large corpus of work. (1)
