AN IMPORTANT EARLY GEORGE III GILTWOOD MIRROR in the manner of Thomas Johnson, with a divided shaped rectangular plate within mirrored borders, the elaborately carved frame with feathery leaves, scrolling acanthus, flowering branchwork, architectural balconies and pavilions, 95" high x 42.5" wide. Provenance: From the Collection of Edward Cecil Guinness, First Earl of Iveagh at Farmleigh, Castleknock, Co. Dublin. At Farmleigh the mirror is recorded as hanging in the main ground floor corridor. Farmleigh was sold by the Guinness family to the Irish Government in 1995. This magnificent rococo mirror is a tour de force, both in terms of scale and the execution of the design and carving. It relates to the published designs of Thomas Johnson and was almost certainly produced by one of the leading London cabinet makers during the 1760's. Elements of the carving may be compared to comparable pieces by Thomas Chippendale and John Linnell.

A fine and large pair of wall hanging carved giltwood Looking Glasses in the mid 18th Century Chippendale rococo style, each with a scrolling acanthus pediment above a stylised anthemion flanked by two columns and further rococo style decoration in the form of further acanthus leaves and 'C' scrolls etc., each with hand bevelled plate within a gadrooned inner frame, (first half 20th Century), each approx. 194cm (highest) x 125cm (widest)
A very large hand knotted Turkish Sparta carpet, Islamic style rose and cream ground lozenge against a light green ground with cream borders and rose coloured spandrels, all within varying sized and coloured borders with stylised repeating patterns etc., first quarter 20th Century, 732cm long x 407cm wide
An unusual bird's eye maple early/mid 19th Century Davenport Desk, the three quarter gilt metal gallery sliding top above a leathered sloping fall opening to reveal two small drawers and four full width true drawers below a pull out hinged stationery drawer, four dummy drawers opposing and brushing slide to each side, raised on later boxwood castors CONDITION REPORT: The leathered on the fall looks original and is square. Possibly cedar wood or pine underneath the lid when you open it. Because the wood has contracted over time there are two horizontal splits to the leather, the first is at the top which runs all the way along and the second is at the bottom of the leather horizontally which again runs all the way along. There is a 10p piece ring burn mark within the three quarter pierced brass gallery area, some of the veneers are lifting slightly on this area. Opening the fall there are two half width drawers and a false drawer below, it is true to say that there are some markings and light scuffings inside under the fall. Looking at the side with the true drawers, the second drawer down left hand handle and is missing and also the left hand bottom drawer handle is missing. One handle is present within the Davenport, the small hinged side drawer above the brushing slide has a replaced pine handle. The colour overall looks quite good and the drawers are oak lined with dust beading and the locks are stamped Bramah. The front panelled section looks reasonable although quite dark towards the bottom of the moulding and possible very slightly faded. The side with the false drawers and further brushing slider looks reasonable with minor markings and minor scratchings commensurate with age. The back panel again looks reasonable although the rectangular section at the top (where the Davenport slides) has faded and would benefit from a re-polish as it is dry. Looking at the back right muntin on the panelled back there is a 2cm square piece of veneer away and it is cracked approx. 2cm. There are also small separator cracks to the left and right hand side on the pierced three quarter gallery in the middle on the moulding but these are only small. The feet are now missing and it is raised on blocks with later castors.Height including three quarter brass gallery is 88cm high x 49cm wide x 62cm deep.
ADDED LOT A large pair of 19th century Majolica Vases, each decorated in high relief with a dragon chasing a flaming pearl through cloud, 69cm high CONDITION REPORT: One Vase has been heavily restored from the inside with significant reparations and restructuring, there are also paint losses and losses to the extremities on the first Vase, the other Vase appears to be in better condition but again not perfect with hairlines, some restoration and some losses to scales upon the back of the dragon and to the feet, these Vases although with wonderful decorative appeal in our opinion have been heavily restored and are nowhere near A1 condition.
