Seemingly unrecorded.  A rare advertisement for waxworks and mechanical inventions, somewhat gruesome through modern eyes, which include; an early waxwork exhibition of the victims of Jack the Ripper, and a life-sized figure of General Gordon which it claims, "is made to breathe as natural as life by the aid of machinery. The figure is seen to gasp for breath, as the blood oozes from the bullet-wound in the side."

Longman, et al., 1796.*** Originally published in 1747, Glasse's work was a bestseller for a century after its first publication, dominating the English-speaking market with at least 40 editions, and making Glasse one of the most famous cookbook authors of her time. First World War.- In Ruhleben Camp, No.1-9, plus "Xmas Number", 1915; The Ruhleben Camp Magazine, No. 1-6, 1916-17, together 16 issues in 1 vol., illustrations, advertisements, some toning to text, 20th century calf, original wrappers bound in, t.e.g., 8vo.*** Ruhleben was a civilian detention camp in Germany during World War I, which housed citizens of the Allied Powers who had found themselves in Germany at the outbreak of the war. It was located at a racetrack in Spandau, a suburb of Berlin, and the detainees were mostly housed in stalls originally intended for racehorses. The camp remained operative until Armistice Day in 1918. Of the 6 volumes of The Ruhleben Camp Magazine included here, vol. 5 constitutes a Christmas issue.

Notably, ABC was also translated into English the soonest, published by The Communist Party of Great Britain in 1922, and this copy in particular owned by the Labour Party - who incidentally acceded to government for the first time the following year. This copy was also owned by Harold E. Clay, a prominent trade union leader and advocate of the British Socialist Party's affiliation to the Labour Party, who later served as chairman of the London Labour party from 1933-1948.

The stewards listed on the reverse, other than Dickens and Lytton, include Charles Babbage, Douglas Jerrold, Charles Knight, Sir Edwin Landseer, Alfred Tennyson and W. M. Thackeray.
