Colonial School. Mexico. 18th century."Personification of the four continents".Set of four oil paintings on canvas. 34 x 31 cm each.Unusual portrayal of the set of the Four Continents that were then known in Europe, in which one of the first European personifications of the American continent appears.Introducing: Europe, America, Africa and Asia.Four Continents, four women.Europe is dressed as a queen, and clearly the leader of the group. As in Cesare Ripa's Iconologia, she appears as the most nobly dressed, almost Roman, as well as being surrounded by relics of art, science and music, with an owl at her feet, like the goddess Pallas Athena, a symbol of "wisdom".America, dressed as a noble savage or Indian princess, holds a bow.One of the oldest and most persistent attributes for the Americas, which appears on this canvas, is the parrot. Some of these birds were brought to Europe at the beginning of the 16th century and were highly valued. The painting also portrays the feather headdress, with the feathers in a vertical position, which reflects the royal headdress of some Indigenous peoples. There are fruit trees with bananas, and some peaceful and curious animals that contemplate us.Africa is half-dressed, with the exoticism and dryness of the landscape: desert pyramids, ivory as the gold of Africa, and the lion as the great king of the savannah.Asia is richly and fully dressed, displaying jewellery, spices, incense and the famous Burmese tiger. These four canvases would be a colourful delight for any great decorator. They are universal, magical, full of dreams of catching the whole world on four walls or in a beautiful corner of any home.

Gil de Siloé (Antwerp, Belgium or Urliones, France?, circa 1467 - Burgos, 1505)"Saint Barbara"Carved, gilded and polychromed wooden sculpture.110 x 28 x 30 cm.This image bears a great resemblance to the polychromed limestone sculpture of the Virgin and Child, from the facade of the arch of Santa María la Mayor, in Burgos, and which is currently on display at the Burgos Museum. The similarity to the face is remarkable, being an almond-shaped oval, with a long, thin nose and a small mouth with an expression so characteristic of the sculptor. To this can be added the treatment of the hair, made up of long, wavy locks, loose on both sides of her face. The Saint is represented in a frontal position, standing with her right leg slightly forward, creating a contrapposto effect. Dressed in rich courtly clothing, she wears a dress in reddish tones tied with a fringed chord which falls to her feet forming folds reminiscent of Gothic folds. With a pronounced bosom, her white blouse peeks out and she is covered from shoulders to feet in a luxurious gold cloak with a blue interior. Saint Barbara gathers up the cloak with her right arm to pick it up, in one of the sculptor's graceful gestures. This sculpture gives a strong indication of Gil de Siloé's origin being Flemish, evident in the headdress that covers part of the saint's head, in her extremely delicate hands and in the sweet beauty of the face. Finally, the wonderful tower held in her left hand is remarkable and symbolizes Saint Barbara's attribute. In her other hand she would have held a palm, which is not preserved, symbolizing her martyrdom. The tower, according to tradition, consists of three windows "to remember the words of the Saint, according to whom the light had entered her through the three windows of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit", as indicated by Don Luis Monreal y Tejada in his Iconography of Christianity. In this tower she was locked up by her father, Dioscuros, to protect her from her suitors. Saint Barbara, who had previously baptized herself, fled from the tower and was therefore arrested, tried and sentenced to death. The miracle occurred when, before being beheaded, lightning struck, killing her tormentors.Saint Barbara, virgin and martyr, lived in Antioch in the middle of the 3rd century under the rule of Maximian.Gil de Siloé was a sculptor who was the greatest representative of Elizabethan Gothic, a style typical of the Crown of Castile which originated after the merging of Mudejar art and Flamboyant Gothic with Flemish influences. His origin remains uncertain: it seems likely that he was Flemish and the fact that he sometimes signed "Gil de Enberres" (Amberes being the Spanish for Antwerp) attests to this, but he also sometimes signed "Gil de Urliones" (possibly referring to Orleans) so a possible French origin remains on the table.Be that as it may, Burgos and his great artistic activity attracted him. He arrived there, as el Prado explains in its biography, with an already "defined sculptural language that he would maintain throughout his career and that is characterized by a detailed and meticulous technique that tends to cover all surfaces with decorative elements.” Despite having been called by the rich activity of Burgos, "he lived and worked in Burgos, in Castile, without his clients or the environment influencing him enough to make him change his art", affirms the professor of Art History from the University of Burgos, Dr. Alberto C. Ibáñez Pérez, in the article on Siloé from the Royal Academy of History. The great quality and renown of his work resulted in the creation of a sculptural focus in Burgos, which "radiated its activity and influence throughout the Castilian territory" from the end of the 15th century.Highlights of the artist's output include the altarpiece of the Tree of Jesse, the main altarpiece of the chapel of the Conception in Burgos Cathedral, made between 1483 and 1486, which is considered his first great work and was conceived "with the idea of uniting the three major arts in order to offer a message, in which reality presented with elegant detail served as visual support for the idea,” Ibáñez explains. Also remarkable is the tomb of the parents of Queen Isabel the Catholic, documented in 1486, and that of her brother, Prince Alfonso, both works commissioned by the Queen and sculpted in alabaster, for the Miraflores Charterhouse. The church also has a a Madonna and Child by Siloé, known as the Virgin of the Choir, practically identical to the one exhibited in the Museo del Prado (E000961).Reference bibliography:- Monreal y Tejada, Luis. Miguel Cabrera (Antequera de Oaxaca, Mexico, 1715 / 1720 - Mexico, 1768)"Virgin of Mercy with San Pedro Nolasco y San Ramón Nonato"Oil on copper. Signed. 24 x 18,5 cm.Miguel Cabrera was one of the most renowned painters in the field of eighteenth-century New Spanish painting, with an oeuvre that the Dallas Museum of Art defines as "legendary: more than 309 works from his great studio have been documented." Little is known of his youth; In fact, according to the Andrés Blaisten Museum, it is only because of the painter's will in 1768 that we know that he was a native of Oaxaca. The first news of him is from 1739, the year of his marriage to Ana María Solano, and we also know of his stint at Juan Correa's workshop in the capital of the Viceroyalty.Archbishop Rubio Salinas was Cabrera's patron, whom he named his chamber painter. He was also a painter for the Society of Jesus, for whose churches he produced numerous works. In 1753 he was appointed president for life of the Academy of San Carlos. In 1756 Cabrera published "American wonder and set of rare wonders observed and directed by the rules of the art of painting", a narrative about the image of the Virgin Guadalupe from the printing press of the Jesuit school of San Ildefonso. His work is kept in many churches and convents in Mexico. Two of his images of the Virgin of Guadalupe are in the Vatican Museum. Another, painted in 1756, for the temple of San Francisco Javier, is kept in the National Museum of the Viceroyalty. The Dallas Museum of Art has a Saint Gertrude the Great by Miguel Cabrera and another painting of the saint, also by Cabrera and dated 1768, is part of the collection of the José Luis Bello y Zetina Museum in Puebla, Mexico.Likewise, there is an outstanding series of Casta paintings from 1763 that is kept in the collection at the Museo de América in Madrid. They represent the families, father, mother and son of the various castes and social strata, in situations of daily life. Reference bibliography:- Dallas Museum of Art. (n.d.). "Saint Gertrude". Large embossed, chiselled and gilded silver jug "jarra de pico". New Spain. Mexico. Second half of the 16th century.Magnificent example of Renaissance silversmithing, with a cylindrical body and circular base. The spout is topped with a figurehead, typical of the jugs of the time, and its handle is in the characteristic shape of the number 7.As far as the ornamentation is concerned, except in the upper frieze, which has decoration which is limited to gilding, there is a first incised border delimited by two parallel profiles that protrude. The lower body, studded with engraved decoration and six applied ribs, is topped by a lion's head. There is an inscription on the base: 'so DE ALFERED DIEG MVRGVIA', alluding to the original owner of the jug. There are three examples of Mexican spouted jars from the same period that we can provide as a reference for comparison. Two are in the collection of the Lázaro Galdiano Museum in Madrid (inv. 2400 and 2503) and the third, kept in the Naval Museum of Madrid, is the one that seems closest to this one due to the engraved decoration on the lower body. It comes from the wreck of the ship 'San Diego', sunk in 1600 off the island of Fortuna, Philippines; It is dated circa 1590, with inventory number MNM7518.In addition, it is very similar to one of the two spouted jugs that are included in the collection at the Victoria & Albert Museum in London, which we find reproduced on page 463 of the Enciclopedia de la Plata Española y Virreinal Americana.19 x 20.5 cm.Reference bibliography:Fernandez, A.; Munoa, R.; and Rabasco, J. The two references were essentially identical apart from the 7031 had a black acrylic bezel, as shown with the current example, and the 7032 had a stainless-steel bezel. These were the first chronographs produced by Tudor and are instantly recognisable by the distinctive dial with angled subsidiary dials instead of the more normal circular subsidiaries used by the other chronographs of its time. The combination of the vibrant orange chronograph seconds hand and 5 minute markers against the black dial is a great example of 70's design and a look that remains distinctive working equally well today as it did when it was produced. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
