Thomas Henry Sargent (1894 – 1963), known professionally by his stage name Max Miller and billed as The Cheeky Chappie, was an English comedian often considered the greatest stand-up of his generation. He came from humble beginnings and left school at the age of twelve. At the outbreak of the First World War, he volunteered for the army. During his time in the forces, he started a troupe concert party. On leaving the army, he took up work as a light comedian, dancer, and singer. He toured extensively, appearing in variety, revues and by the early 1930s reached the top of the bill in the large music halls including the London Palladium.

Sir Stanley Matthews was an English footballer, (1 February 1915 – 23 February 2000) who played as an outside right and is regarded as one of the greatest British football players of all time. He is the only player to have been knighted and has been the first winner of both European Footballer of the Year and the Football Writers' Association Footballer of the Year awards.

Player's Cigarette Cards - a folder of original material and ephemera relating to the production of a series of 'Antarctic Expedition' themed cigarette cards, later appearing to have been reworked as the Polar Exploration series released in 1916 by Player's Cigarettes (the second series of cards titled such). The folder features many letters from Commander Edward RGR Evans (Captain of the Terra Nova, in the Terra Nova Expedition of 1910-13, second in command to Robert Scott). The letters reference sketches and artwork drawn by Evans for inclusion in the series of cigarette cards being produced by Mardons. The folder includes: 1) a letter on British Antarctic Expedition 1910 'Commander Evans's Lecture Tour' stationery dated June 29th 1914, which reads, in part: ...I am now making you sketches to the number mentioned in a form suitable for publication. There is some difficulty about using photographs, and for this reason I will send you original sketches.... I have done this kind of work for Players but never on the subject of Captain Scott's of Amundsen's expeditions,' (signed) 2) x4 pre-production test prints of sheets of the Player's Cigarettes cards, noted to the margin as 'Players Antarctic Series.' 3) a letter on HMS Mohawk headed stationery from Commander Evans reading 'Dear Sirs, I beg to enclose drawings 12 to 18 inclusive, of the Antarctic series. The others will follow in due course. You will, I know, pardon the delay. Owing to the War I am very much occupied!!! (signed) Dated August 18th 1914. 4) a two-page handwritten letter on Admiralty stationery, titled from HMS Mowhawk. The letter, in part, reads: Dear Sirs... I now forward in two registered packages the remainder of the sketches... they have been executed under somewhat trying conditions, but I think they will come up to your expectations and requirements.... Please arrange payment yourselves. I shall expend the money on providing myself with a winter outfit - I hope my destroyer will not fall into the hands of the Germans and I sincerely hope that I may participate in giving our bestial enemies the good 'licking' Commander Mardon speaks of! I much regret to inform you that Lieut. Commander HZ Dr P. Rennich was lost in the sinking of HMS Hogue. He was one of the cheeriest and ablest officers in the British Antarctic Expedition... (signed). 5) several copies of letters sent to Commander Evans from Mardon, Son & Hall feature - many thanking him for his sketches and work - including the letter to which Evans has responded, above. 6) several letters between Mardon, Son & Hall and Player's Cigarettes concerning the series' production 7) a pre-production 'Antarctic Series' list of subjects received from Commander Evans (showing a list of 24 sketches received) And several other items of ephemera relating to both the organising of and production of the eventual series. A unique archive of never-before-seen paperwork, with some interesting historical connections. Admiral Edward Ratcliffe Garth Russell Evans, 1st Baron Mountevans, KCB, DSO, SGM (1880 –1957) was a Royal Navy officer and Antarctic explorer. Evans was seconded from the Navy to the Discovery expedition to Antarctica in 1901–1904, when he served on the crew of the relief ship, and afterwards began planning his own Antarctic expedition. However, he suspended this plan when offered the post of second-in-command on Robert Falcon Scott's ill-fated Terra Nova expedition to the South Pole in 1910–1913, as captain of the expedition ship Terra Nova. He accompanied Scott to within 150 miles of the Pole, but was sent back in command of the last supporting party. On the return he became seriously ill with scurvy and only narrowly survived. After the expedition he toured the country giving lectures, and returned to his naval duties as a commander in the summer of 1914. He spent the First World War as a destroyer captain, becoming famous as "Evans of the Broke" after the battle of Dover Strait in 1917.

Clapham and Dwyer were a British comedy duo popular in the 1920s and 1930s, comprising Charlie Clapham (William Charles Conrad Clapham; 6 January 1894–27 July 1959) and Bill Dwyer (William Henry Dwyer; 7 May 1887–11 January 1943). They were the first comedy double act to become famous on British radio, and continued to broadcast regularly through the 1920s and 1930s. Dwyer was the straight man, and Clapham - with monocle and moustache - was the fool. Their sketches often featured "Cissie the Cow", a disruptive influence that was initially imaginary but was later played onstage in the manner of a pantomime horse. As a stage act from 1928, they appeared in venues all over the country.

WD & HO Wills - Cigarette Cards - 'Safety First' (1934) - a presentation of original hand painted / drawn artwork for five of the cigarette cards. The original artwork for the cards 'Do Not Read While Walking In The Street.' 'Do Not Attempt To Board Or Alight From A Vehicle In Motion,' 'Help The Young And The Infirm To Cross The Road,' Look Before You Leave The Pavement,' and 'Pedestrians: Use Recognised Crossing Places Provided For Your Safety.' Each piece hand drawn and painted by artists working at Mardon, Son & Hall in the 1930s. Mounted to a custom-made board (made by Mardons in order to later display the pieces) showing the artwork, the final produced cigarette cards and special printed versions of the text to the rear. He played as a wing half and began his professional career with Queen's Park Rangers and then his career was interrupted by World War II, after which in 1948 he moved to Aston Villa and played 79 games in the First Division. He was inducted to the Welsh Sports Hall of Fame in 2004 alongside snooker player Terry Griffiths and cricketer Tony Lewis.

Churchman's (W.A & A.C), Cigarettes - Stars Of Variety (unproduced series c1946) - Original Artwork - Cyril Fletcher - an original over-painted photograph artwork laid on metal, completed by artists at Mardon, Son & Hall for production of the cigarette card series. Accompanied by two typed letters from Fletcher, one regarding the colouring of the image and the other giving permission for its use. Artwork size: 8x5", approx. Cyril Fletcher (1913 – 2005) was an English comedian, actor and businessman. His catchphrase was 'Pin back your lugholes'. He was best known for his "Odd Odes", which later formed a section of the television show That's Life!, a role for which he was approached in error. So successful was he however, that he stayed on the show from 1973 to 1981. He first began performing the Odd Odes in 1937, long before they first appeared on television (though he did appear on pre World War II television).

After a career as a concert pianist as a child, Arnaud acted in musical comedies. SHe switched to non-musical comedy and drama around 1920 and was one of the players in the second of the Aldwych farces, A Cuckoo in the Nest, a hit in 1925.

He played for Blackpool, Hull City, Southport, Bath City, Lancaster City and England for his international career.
