EILEEN SOPER (1905-1990) THREE WEES Etching, 1921, signed in pencil 12.2 x 9.7cm. ++ Very slight light staining * The following 28 lots are all by Eileen Soper, an artist of prodigious ability who showed the first of her 250 etchings at the Royal Academy at the age of just 15. Eileen learnt etching from her father, George Soper, and, with her sister Eva, developed a naturalist sanctuary at their home, "The Wildings", in Hertfordshire. She was the illustrator for 35 Enid Blyton books and had a gift for capturing the playful mischief of children in her work. Soper also painted the only known portrait of Eric Liddell, the Scottish athlete whose story was the inspiration for the 1981 film, Chariots of Fire. All these etchings and drawings were found in her home when she died. They were bequeathed to The Artists` General Benevolent Institution and sold by Chris Beetles to raise funds for the charity. These lots were purchased by the current owner from Chris Beetles`s exhibition of both Sopers` works in 1995.

1954 - First Sub 4 minute Mile Record. Sub 4 minute mile signed display – comprising the autographs of the record holder Roger Bannister and his two pacemakers Chris Chataway and Chris Brasher together with a photograph print of the three runners after breaking the record – in blue mount overall 11 x 14" plus 2x FDC s signed by all three runners. (3) Note: This historic event took place on 6 May 1954 during a meet between British AAA and Oxford University at Iffley Road Track in Oxford. It was watched by about 3,000 spectators. With winds up to 25 miles per hour (40 km/h) prior to the event, Bannister had said twice that he favoured not running, to conserve his energy and efforts to break the 4-minute barrier; he would try again at another meet. However, the winds dropped just before the race was scheduled to begin, and Bannister did run. Two other runners, Brasher and Chataway, provided pacing while completing the race. Both went on to establish their own track careers. The race was broadcast live by BBC Radio and commented on by Harold Abrahams, of Chariots of Fire fame.
