Folengo was the leading practitioner of macaronic poetry (the blending of the vernacular with Latin, often in burlesque writings), and here we find his master-piece Baldus. This tale was the inspiration for Rabelais' Panurge and Gargantua. It includes the merciless satirising of the clergy and a number of highly memorable scenes, such as the battle of the flying ants.

Hunt (Leigh) The Descent of Liberty, a Mask, first edition, presentation inscription "To Signor Gaetano Polidori, with the author's thanks, in every sense of the word, for his translations of some of the minor poems of Milton" to half-title, hinges sympathetically strengthened and repaired, original boards, rebacked, rubbed, 8vo, Printed for Gale, Curtis, and Fenner, Paternoster Row, 1815.⁂ A very good presentation copy to the father of John Polidori.
Limericks.- History of Sixteen Wonderful Old Women (The), first edition, 16 leaves, hand-coloured engravings with verse below, printed on one side only, slightly browned and marked, some colour show through, ink inscription dated 1823 on inside of upper cover, with later ink inscription 1921, original printed wrappers, soiled, slight wear, 8vo, 1821.⁂ Thought to be the first printed book of Limericks. "There was an Old woman named Towl; Who went out to Sea with her Owl: But the Owl was Sea-Sick; And scream's for Physic; Which sadly annoy'd Mistress Towl."
Mechanical Devices.- Grollier de Serviere (Gaspard) Recueil d'Ouvrages Curieux de Mathematique et de Mecanique, ou Description du Cabinet..., first edition, title in red and black with woodcut device, dedication with engraved coat-of-arms and initial, woodcut ornaments and initials, 85 engraved plates numbered to LXXXVIII (plates XXXIX, XLVIII & LXXVI not issued), errata leaf at end, title a little soiled and water-stained at inner margin, marginal tear to dedication, a few plates lightly browned, engraved bookplate of Bryan Faussett, contemporary calf, worn, rebacked preserving part of gilt spine, [Berlin Kat. 1784], 4to, Lyons, David Forey, 1719.⁂ A description of the collection of mechanical instruments formed, and predominantly made, by the author's grandfather, Nicolas Grollier de Serviere (1593-1686). He was a mirror-maker and descendant of Jean Grolier the bibliophile. The collection included clocks, bridges, locks, water-raising devices, mills, military engines, a revolving bookcase, wheelchair etc.
[Baring-Gould (Sabine)] Mehalah A Story of the Salt Marshes, 2 vol., first edition, half-titles, advertisement f. at end of vol.1, occasional spotting, later dark blue half crushed morocco by Zaehnsdorf, gilt, spine in compartments and with floral decorations, [Sadleir 162; Wolff 271], 8vo, 1880.⁂ 'Truly rare book' (Wolff). The work is set on the 19th century Essex coast, with its marshes, smugglers, wildfowlers and local characters. Swinburne compared it to Emily Brontë's Wuthering Heights.

The author was killed by an elephant in West Africa in 1890.

Africa.- Thomson (Joseph) To the Central African Lakes and Back, 2 vol., first edition, half-title, mounted photographic portrait frontispieces (vol. 1, laid down), 2 folding colour maps, both with small areas of loss and laid down, ink stamp erased from verso titles, 32pp. publishers' catalogue at end vol. 2, original cloth bound in, modern half morocco, gilt, 1881; and another by the same, 8vo (3)⁂ Thomson was a Scottish geologist and explorer who accompanied Alexander Keith Johnston on his expedition to establish a route from Dar es Salaam to Lake Nyasa and Lake Taganyika. Johnston died during the trip and Thomson took over leadership of the expedition, travelling 3,000 miles in 14 months.
Canada.- Cartwright (George) A Journal of Transactions and Events, during a Residence of nearly Sixteen Years on the Coast of Labrador..., 3 vol. in 1, first edition, engraved portrait frontispiece of the author visiting his fox-traps (lightly offset on title), list of subscribers, 2 large folding engraved maps (some tears neatly repaired), light staining to a few leaves, 3D1 with paper flaw tear to lower margin, unobtrusive embossed library stamp to a couple of leaves, a good uncut copy on large paper with wide margins, bound in handsome modern dark blue straight-grain morocco with gilt-tooled borders of Greek key and leafy sprays, spine gilt in compartments with five double raised bands, uncut, [Sabin 11150], 4to, Newark, 1792. ⁂ Cartwright was a British officer who made six expeditions to Newfoundland and Labrador between 1770 and 1786, hunting and trapping. His account includes descriptions of the animals, particularly foxes and beavers, and the native Indians and Eskimos. Please note: Lot 183 – this appears to be a made-up copy with the frontispiece portrait, title and folding maps mounted on stubs, and the portrait (which is on thicker paper) and the ‘Explanation of the Frontispiece’ leaf being shorter
Ceylon.- Fellowes (Robert) and Robert Knox. The History of Ceylon, 2 parts in 1, first edition, engraved portrait frontispiece, folding map (with short repaired tear), 15 engraved plates (browned), occasional foxing, bookplate of E. Walcott, contemporary dark blue half morocco, gilt, spine gilt, 4to, 1817.⁂ A very good copy of this comprehensive history of the island from ancient times to 1815, with details of religion, laws, domestic economy, fauna and flora and a chapter on pearl fishing. Part 2, by Ronald Knox, include an account of the rebellion in which he was captured, imprisoned and later escaped.
Egyptology.- Mariette-Bey (Auguste) Album du Musée de Boulaq, first edition, 40 albumen prints by Emile Béchard and Hippolyte Délié mounted on thick card leaves (photographs c. 250 x 190mm.), some light spotting to mounts and text, title creased and reinforced at upper and lower edges, a few other leaves repaired at edges, original morocco-backed blind-stamped cloth, spine gilt, g.e., rubbed, folio, Cairo, Mourès & Cie., 1871.⁂ Important photographic record of the first Egyptian public museum, founded by Auguste Mariette in 1858 in a former warehouse on the banks of the Nile. Unfortunately the river flooded in 1878 damaging the museum and the contents were moved in 1892 to a palace in Giza and then again in 1902, to the current museum in Tahrir Square in central Cairo. The magnificent photographs by Béchard and Délié of Egyptian statuary, funerary artefacts, sarcophagi etc. won a Gold Medal at the International Exhibition in Paris in 1878.
Polar.- Amundsen (Roald) The South Pole: An Account of the Norwegian Antarctic Expedition in the "Fram", 2 vol., first English edition, plates, folding maps, occasional foxing, original pictorial cloth, spines with some discolouration of flag motif, 8vo, 1912.⁂ A very good set of Amundsen's classic account of his reaching the pole some 34 days before Scott.

(10 1/2 x 14 1/2 in), central vertical fold, inset at edges onto paper support, unframed, [early to mid-18th century]; together with a good mixed group of various old master prints, including Sebastiano Fulcaro's (ca. 1612-1640) The Last Judgement, after Michelangelo, an anonymous 16th century Adoration of the Shepherds, published by Lafrery, Battista Franco's (1510-1561) An antique subject depiciting three men, [B. 71], Camillo Cungi's (fl. 1597-1649) The Pietà, and three others, all unframed, mainly 17th and early 18th century (10).Provenance:(Reverdy) William Esdaile (1758-1837), London [L. 2617]⁂ A group of scarce and unusual prints. We have been unable to find any other records at auction for the first three mentioned. Initially considered to be Italian by Bartsch, Reverdy was infact French, and worked as a printer in Lyon during the French Renaissance. For another impression of the Reverdy etching, of inferior quality, see the Mariette Album, held in the Met Museum, New York (acc. no. 27.78.2(312)), and at the BM (acc. no. W,1.82).
Arithmetic.- [Recorde (Robert)] [The Grounde of Artes: teaching the perfecte vvorke and practise of arithmetike, both in whole nu[m]bers and fractions, after a more easie and exact sort, than hitherto hath bene set forth...augmented by M. Iohn Dee. And now lately diligently corrected...By Iohn Mellis of Southwark, scholemaster], black letter, lacking A1 & 2, 7 & 8, D6, Yy1-3 & 6-8, with woodcut initials, diagrams and tables, with 17th & 18th century manuscript names and extensive notes & remarks to margins throughout (some relating to a constable), rather soiled and stained, some worming to inner margin towards end, leaves at beginning and end a little creased/frayed at edges, contemporary limp vellum, lacking ties, worn and stained, [STC 20802], 8vo, [Imprinted by I. Harison, and H. Bynneman], [1582]; sold not subject to return⁂ Very rare; one of the first English textbooks on arithmetic, first published in 1543 and running to many editions in the late 16th and early 17th centuries. This edition is the first edited by John Mellis and contains a third part by him with a separate divisional title and, at the end, comparisons of values, weights and measures in London and continental commercial centres such as Antwerp, Nuremberg, Venice etc. The work also contains a full-page woodcut of the art of numbering by the hand.ESTC lists only 4 UK copies (Birmingham, BL, Cambridge University, & St. John's Oxford) and one in America (Folger).
Chess.- Twiss (Richard, editor) Chess, 2 vol. in 1, engraved titles and 2 plates, errata slip, light foxing to second title, later half morocco, by Walker & Son of Plymouth, spine gilt, slightly rubbed, 8vo, G. G. J. & J. Robinson, 1787-89.⁂ Including 'The Morals of Chess' by Benjamin Franklin (pp.141-148 in vol.1), first published in The Columbian Magazine in December 1786. As one of the first Americans to play chess he advocates playing the game to develop skills, "The Game of Chess is not merely an idle amusement; several very valuable qualities of the mind, useful in the course of human life, are to be acquired and strengthened by it, so as to become habits ready on all occasions...".

Rilke (Rainer Maria) Das Stunden-Buch enthaltend die drei Bücher: Vom moenchischen Leben/ Von der Pilgerschaft/ Von der Armuth und vom Tode, first edition, number 71 of 500 copies, signed and inscribed by the author "Meinem lieben Jakob Wassermann herzlich gegeben. Rainer Maria Rilke Meudon-Val-Fleury (Auf. 1906)" on front free endpaper, printed in red & black with title-vignette, head-piece of monk in a scriptorium and initial in red by Walter Tiemann, light foxing or browning to one or two leaves, original cloth-backed printed limp grey boards, uncut, slightly rubbed and marked, corners a little worn, 8vo, Leipzig, 1905.⁂ Jakob Wassermann (1873-1934) was a German writer and an important influence on Rilke, introducing him to German literary society. It was at Wassermann's Munich apartment, in 1897, that Rilke first met Lou Andreas-Salomé, the Russian psychoanalyst who became his lover and life-long friend and confidante.
