We asked a pilot to accompany us but he refused. We accomplished the task and was the first boat that got to the ship. A short time after a pilot came which of course supervised us and our men totally unrewarded…’ The ‘hurricane’ was a real event with a huge storm surge which devastated the entire Channel coast of Devon, Dorset and into Hampshire. France – Coronation of Charles X fine and extensive letter written by Thomas Henry Stirling, dated Battersea October 25th 1825, describing his adventures in France including witnessing the Coronation of Charles X : ‘…I was among the few Englishmen who were at Rhiemes & was highly gratified at the sight of the Coronation as well as the ceremony of the order of St Esprit, the following day; both of which were imposing, but still wanting in that solid magnificence which our own Coronation displayed…I was also at the Grand Review where I saw for the first time about 20,000 French troops march before me, if it might be called marching, for I cannot help saying that I have seen our volunteers perform better…I was close to the King & Royal family almost the whole time. They looked very well but certainly little of the military about them except the Duchess of Angouleme…’ Elsewhere in the letter, Stirling comments that he had brought back to Britain two original portraits ‘as large as life of Napoleon le Grand (certainly one of the ost wonderful characters that ever lives) by Lefvre & that of Maria Louisa by Gerard’ and discusses their provenance and authenticity. SPAN 100 FEET". The reverse depicts a man working at a barge-lifting machine and carries the legend "INCLINED PLANE AT KETLEY. 1789". There is also an inscription on the edge :"PAYABLE AT COALBROOK-DALE AND KETLEY". This is listed in the official listings of tokens as ‘Scarce’ It was issued by one of the greatest companies in the development of the industrial revolution in Shropshire, Reynolds & Co., trading as the Coalbrook-Dale Iron Company with establishments at Coalbrook-Dale and Ketley. The inclusion of the Ketley inclined plain is also significant as this was an invention of Reynolds in order to combat the very steep inclines of the area now known as Telford, which made it impossible to provide locks on the various industrial canals which were being built to carry coal and finished goods. The Ketley was the first such invention in Britain. The last surviving of the great Shropshire incline planes, at Hay, near Ironbridge is now partially restored and preserved at the Ironbridge Gorge Museum. The Ketley Inclined plain has long disappeared under the modern housing of Telford, though remnants of the Ketley canal can still be found.
