Scarce Collection by the Brother of the NovelistÓ Flaitheartaigh (Tomás) An important folio copy-book containing what appear to be original manuscript Stories and Poems, mostly in Gaelic script, with some loose pages, including: Mallacht na Baintridhe [The Widow's Curse], 6 pp, pages loose; An Capall Bán [The White Horse], 6 pp, signed at end;Bó 7 Sgailp [A Cow and a Cliff], 5 pp;Bás An Ghainéid [The Death of the Gannet], 6 pp, signed at end;An Préachán Mór [The Big Crow], 11 p;and two loose pages with what appear to be notes in English for stories;Written from the other end are poems including:An Deoraidhe [The Emigrant], 3 verses;Tomás Ó Gríobhtha [Thomas Griffith], 5 verses;Teanga na hÉireann [The Language of Ireland], 12 verses, signed at end Caitlín ní Fhlaithbheartaigh, with a printed cutting of the same poem (with same signature), evidently from a newspaper or magazine;Trial of John N. Payton for the wilful murder of Cumann Liteardha na Gaedhilge, 23 March 1914 [play in English], 22pp. (1)A unique collection, mostly by Liam O'Flaherty's elder brother Tomás, who went to Boston as a young man. The comparison with Liam's work is interesting, in view of the similar subject matter of some of the stories. English versions of some of these stories (Bó i Sgailp, The White Horse) are included in Tom O'Flaherty's collection Cliffmen of the West [London 1935]. To the best of our knowledge, apart from Caitlín's poem, most of these works are unpublished in their original versions. Caitlín ní Fhlaitheartaigh is presumably a sister of Tomás and Liam. It is said that Tomás was the first person to urge Liam to write (see Hogan, Dict. of Irish Literature). As a m/ss, w.a.f.

Very Rare 1922 Proclamation - Probably UnrecordedRIALTAS SEALADACH NA hÉIREANN. IRISH PROVISIONAL GOVERNMENT.In the Matter of the Treaty between Great Britain and Ireland signed at London on the 6th day of December 1921 .. A PROCLAMATION declaring the Calling of a Parliament in Ireland .. to meet at the City of Dublin on the First day of July next.Published at Dublin this 27th day of May, 1922.(Signed) MÍCHEÁL Ó COILEÁIN (Chairman of the Provisional Government) DIARMUID Ó hÉIGCEARTUIGH (Secretary to the Provisional Government).Broadside poster, 17 ¼ x 22 ¼ ins [44 x 27 cms], on lightish paper, verso blank.Printed by A.T. [Thoms] & Co., 5/22. Fold marks, other minor marks and abrasions, traces of adhesive to rear, generally a clean copy of a very rare item.· On 7 January 1922 the Dail voted by a slender majority to approve the Treaty with Britain. Under the Treaty terms the Parliament of Southern Ireland, set up under the (British) Government of Ireland Act, met for the only time on 14 January in Dublin. It voted to approve the Treaty, and to form a Provisional Government headed by Collins (the anti-Treaty members did not attend). Thereafter the Provisional Government continued in parallel with the Dail cabinet headed by Arthur Griffith. The intention was that an agreed election would be held, which would lead to the amalgamation of the two governments (the so-called 'Pact' election). These plans were quickly overtaken by the drift towards Civil War. The election was duly held on 16 June, but the assassination of Sir Henry Wilson and the attack on the Four Courts followed quickly. The Parliament called for 1 July did not meet until September, when Collins and Griffith were both dead. The present document appears to be extremely rare, possibly unique. We have not seen it before, and cannot find any published reference to it. It was evidently posted, probably in a police station (hence the adhesive residue to rear), but presumably was withdrawn when the Parliament was postponed; most copies would then have been dumped. The present copy is faintly inscribed to rear, in pencil 'Castletownshend'.Provenance: Estate of Edith Somerville.
Zulu WarsA Scrapbook of Obituaries of Members of the Coghill FamilyNews cuttings of the deaths of members of the Coghill family and their relations, ending in 1909. Several pages are devoted to the Battle of Isandlwana in the Zulu War of 1879, with narratives, maps and drawings. Lieutenant Nevill Coghill, who was killed in the aftermath of the battle while attempting to save the life of a brother officer, was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross. There is also much material on the Abergele rail disaster of 20 August 1868, in which the Euston-Holyhead train collided with some runaway wagons loaded with paraffin oil, which caught fire in the collision; all passengers in the first four carriages were burned to death. The fatalities included John Harrison Aylmer of Walworth Castle, Durham, his wife Rosanna Louisa (née Coghill), and their eldest son Arthur, aged 18. Pasted into the scrapbook is a telegram from Mrs Coghill's brother-in-law Allen Windle to another brother-in-law Thomas Greene, stating: "Cannot say whether they are there, remains so charred unrecognisable save ladies box marked A. Lee". On the following page are two poignant mementoes of the tragedy: the charred remnant of a watercolour by Rosalie Franks of the Aylmers' youngest son Edmund (then aged 9), and a fragment of Mrs Aylmer's dress, as a Scrap Album, w.a.f. 'Stuffy old Aunt Lily ..'Susan Mary (Lily) Yeats: Two ALS to her relation Olive P. Jackson in Sligo, from Dundrum, 1936 (4 pp) and 1943 (2 pp), with the envelopes, the first mostly about gravestones, family history, the Pollexfens and Stephens, an inheritance, and some family news - 'Willy is better but he has to go slow - he is working away - but not going about beyond the garden. He went one night to the Abbey, the house was full & he was spotted & clapped & cheered by the house, he thought the curtain had gone up at first, it was nice of the people ..'The second letter also mentions W.B.Y.'s daughter Anne [Yeats], 'she is as you say very unaffected & nice - everyone likes her - she has very pleasant friendly ways - & often looks a handsome girl - but I would like her to take more care of her appearance - Michael [her brother] is very much against her "slacks" - she always calls on me in a skirt, stuffy old Aunt Lily she probably thinks ..' As a m/ss, w.a.f. (2)
Moore (George) [1852-1933] Two short ALS, the first to Lady March, June 30 (no year), 1 pp, from 121 Ebury St., discussing the binding of the 'de luxe' edition of his new book. 'The edition de luxe is sent out in boards, it being supposed that the buyers would like to have it bound to harmonise with their other books. If you have no special binding in your mind, I think you would do well to order your copy to be bound similar to the ordinary edition -- a very pretty binding it is; you are sure to like it.'With a good signature. The second ALS, to 'My dear Clinton', dated 16.9.07, 2 pp (single folded sheet), responds to a request for poetry for 'V.F.' [Vanity Fair]. He says this is difficult, as 'many of my published pieces would be recognised. I send you however a prose-poem ..'. With a good signature. As a m/ss, w.a.f. (2)
Dermod O'Brien P.R.H.A. (1865 - 1945)"Fr. Jeremiah O'Donovan," a very fine oval half length Portrait, O.O.C., approx. 72cms x 64cms (28 1/2" x 25 1/4"), in original gilt frame. (1)Provenance: By direct family descent, to the present owner.Note: Jeremiah O'Donovan (1871-1942), priest and novelist, was a native of Kilkeel in Co. Down.Ordained for Clonfert diocese, he was appointed administrator of St Brendan's Cathedral,Loughrea. An enthusiastic advocate of temperance, self-help, and the Irish revival, he promoted his views in articles and lectures. With financial help from Edward Martyn, he set about redecorating Loughrea Cathedral with works by Irish artists such as Sarah Purser, John Hughes, and the Yeats sisters Elizabeth and Susan.Embittered by clashes with a new bishop, O'Donovan left Loughrea and eventually the priesthood, settling in London where he became Vice-Warden of Toynbee Hall, a Christian socialist educational centre in the East End. He changed his first name to Gerald, married and became the father of three children; in later years he had a long-lasting relationship with the novelist Rose Macaulay.O'Donovan's literary reputation rests on his novels, especially Father Ralph (1913), which deal trenchantly with the conflict between individual freedom and the narrowness of Irish Catholic life in his time.Dermod O'Brien (1865-1945) was born at Mount Trenchard House near Foynes in Co. Limerick; both his grandfathers - William Smith O'Brien and the first Lord Monteagle - are prominent figures in Irish national history. He is chiefly remembered for his landscapes and portraits, of which this depiction of a courageous if controversial Irishman is a fine example.
