An interesting mantel Clock made from the boss of an early laminated dark-wood aircraft Propeller with eight mounting bolt holes and stamped to the top ``DRG No OE8101/1, D 9`6``, P 6.40``, JAGUAR IVC, S No B5, 7 32``, mounted with a brushed finish metal clock face with Arabic numerals and later quartz movement. 14`` wide, 8 3/8`` high, 6 3/16`` deep. This originally 9`6`` diameter propeller was used on an Armstrong Siddeley Jaguar IV C engine. (The Jaguar engine was an air cooled 14 cylinder radial aero engine having two banks of seven cylinders, the then new design of engine was first run on the 21st June 1922 and developed 300 hp. The mark IV C was a modified version of the engine developed in 1928, it by that time had been increased in cubic capacity by an increase of the bores to 5 1/2 inches and displaced 24.8 litres, developed 400 hp and consumed around 20 gallons of fuel per hour. In spite of having a reputation for vibrational harshness attributed to the absence of a crankshaft main bearing between the two banks of cylinders, it was, it seems, fitted to 43 different types of aircraft and it was produced in various versions, the last development being the supercharged Jaguar VIII A of 1929. A Flight magazine article of April 8th 1926 fascinatingly refers to an epic flight by Mr. (later Sir) Alan Cobham from London to Cape town and back to London of some 17,000 miles in a de Haviland 50 bi-plane aircraft G-EBFO powered by one of these engines. After dismantling for inspection, the engine proved to be in virtually new condition with infinitesimally small amounts of wear in spite of having travelled through highly inhospitable conditions and large variations in climate.)

Quakers a particularly fine commonplace book written in a number of neat hands on approx 360 pp 4to with tooled leather binding in good condition throughout. Mid 19th c. The book contains a wealth of prose verse and original drawings and watercolours. Clearly from copious references in the texts this was compiled by a Quaker with references to the famous Quaker families of the time including the Gurney family of Norwich. One entry written neatly over three pages is a homily on the death of Elizabeth Fry (copied from an earlier text) and there is a pencil drawing of the Meeting House at Estington. The book also contains a series of miniature drawings which from references in the book appear to be original watercolours by Thomas Pole MD the famous American born Quaker Minister who became one of the major figures in the Society of Friends in the UK during the early decades of the 19th c. Among his many achievements were the establishment of the first English schools for the adult poor. References to Pole indicate that he left a number of albums featuring his watercolours and this may be one of them - particularly as references to authors in the book could indicate Elizabeth his wife and other members of his family.

Crimean War - Siege of Sebastopol - twelve large 19th century Lithographs - Crimea War Sebastopol hand coloured by Day & Sons after William Simpson. Simpson arrived off the Crimean peninsular on 15 November and could hear distant firing. While he had missed the early battles he was able to record the events before Sebastopol. He made numerous acquaintances who helped him with details for his pictures but he was also struck by the plight of the common soldiers "miserable looking beings... covered with mud dirt and rags " he wrote. He hobnobbed with many officers including Lord Raglan and Captain Peel; he also met Roger Fenton who took his photograph. In May 1855 Simpson accompanied Raglan on the expedition to Kertch which was captured on the 24th but was back in time to observe the first attack on Sebastopol in June. On the night of the 17th he crawled out of a trench to view the attack. He wrote "It was a wild orchestra of sound never to be forgotten." He was still at the front when the city finally surrendered and he quit the Crimea in the autumn of 1855. Lithographs Measure approx 50cm by 32cm. (12)
WWII - Colditz - autograph -Charles Edward Stuart `Lucky` Lockett remarkable autograph letter signed `Charles` to his wife in England written from Colditz Castle dated August 14th 1943 written in pencil on a pre-printed POW form stamped with both the German and British censor marks in fine condition. The letter provides a detailed insight into life at Colditz by one of its most notable inmates. He writes that he has sent his wife some photographs (not present) but describes their content: `...the footballers are a mixed bunch. The people who I discuss in my letters are front row right to left Allen our orderly Roger Heap who eats with us Peter Dollar who lives with Bader. Near the back with pipe Douglas Bader...I haven`t been down to the football field for a hell of a time due to stoppages of privileges or some other reason. The lack of games playing facilities in what is to be an all British camp is a disgrace...the French men get parcels from France which supplement their Red X parcels and take infinite trouble over their cooking. The result is quite amazing. A new Scotch doctor Capt Dickie has arrived and is messing with us he is as far as first impressions go an excellent fellow. I`ve seen quite a lot of him `cos I`ve had a couple of boils ...he lanced one with a razor blade 2 days ago ...` `Lucky` Lockett had a colourful war to say the least. An RAF pilot he was shot down over Sedan and taken prisoner. The rest of his crew were all killed. He made a number of escape attempts including making it on board a Swedish ship but the crew forced the captain to turn him over to the Germans - he thus ended up at Colditz where among his fellow prisoners was Douglas Bader. Lockett himself is credited with having been on the team which made the legendary `Colditz Cock` the audacious attempt to build a glider which was to have been launched from the roof of the castle in an attempt to escape. Letters from Colditz are becoming scarce.
Nazi Propaganda The Case of the `Athenia` by Adolf Halfeld New York 1940 white card wrappers 53pp 8vo. An American production aimed at persuading the American public that `...ruthlessness violence and guile are the three weapons employed by Great Britain to preserve her tottering Empire...` The Athenia a passenger liner bound for America was the first ship sunk in WWII - the event was immediately seized on by the British as a propaganda tool against the Nazis in an effort to bring America into the war in the same way that the Lusitania had been instrumental in bringing America into WWI. The Germans claimed that they had not sunk the vessel but it later emerged that U-Boat U37 had in fact sunk the ship though as the commander claimed in error. The Nazi propaganda machine then counter attacked claiming that Churchill himself had ordered the sinking of the vessel as a cynical plot to create a propaganda coup. A rare book.

William and Mary An Act Declaring the Rights and Liberties of the Subject and Settling the Succession of the Crown. Printed Act of Parliament folio 16pp plus title dated December 16th 1689 contained in a volume of Acts of Parliament from that year. One of the most important and historic Acts in British history. Following the turmoil of the Civil War and the Glorious Revolution which had deposed James II and brought William and Mary to the Throne this was one of the principle measures adopted during the first months of their joint reign. As such it laid down the rights of the individual the preservation of free speech and the freedoms which should be enjoyed by everyone. As such this document set down the basis for constitutional government throughout the world and has been used as the blueprint for similar declarations of rights particularly in the USA. The Act also laid down the rightful succession to the throne - declaring that James II had abdicated the throne (which he had not) and that William and Mary were legally King and Queen reigning jointly (the only time this had ever occurred in British history). It also laid down that the succession should pass to Anne in the event of no legal issue from the joint Monarchs. The Act also established that no Roman Catholic should be allowed to accede to the Throne - a measure which is still in place today. The volume contains a number of other Acts of the year mainly financial. Together with a further group of approx seven unbound Acts from the reign of William and Mary
Literature - Shakespeare The Puritan or the Widow of Watling Street by Mr William Shakespeare London 1734. Engraved frontispiece repaired modern boards 60pp 8vo. A Shakespearean curiosity. The play first published around 1606 was attributed to Shakespeare because the author on the first edition was described as `W S`. As a result it was included in the 1664 edition of the Third Folio of Shakespeare`s plays. It is highly unlikely however that this by Shakespeare and suggestions for its authorship have included Wentworth Smith and more likely Thomas Middleton.
Literature - Shakespeare Volume 1 (of 7) of the 1709 edition of Shakespeare containing The Tempest The Two Gentlemen of Verona The Merry Wives of Windsor Measure for Measure The Comedy of Errors Much Ado about Nothing and Love`s Labour Lost together with `An Account of the Life &c of Mr William Shakespeare` later binding ownership inscriptions but generally good. A rare edition of Shakespeare. This is one of seven volumes of the complete works which were the first to be produced after the folios. They were also the first to carry illustrative plates. This volume also carries Shakespeare`s biography which was the first attempt to survey his life and career.
