Steventon Rectory, newly built for William's growing family by his father in whose gift was the living, replaced the earlier house. William was the third son of Jane's elder brother Edward Austen and his wife Elizabeth Bridges. The present silhouettes - an astonishing discovery at the Newark Fair many years ago - are portraits of six of Knight's eight children by his first wife Caroline Portal. They are likely to have been cut and kept at Steventon Rectory during Knight's long incumbency. In January 1809 Jane Austen wrote to her sister Cassandra (at Godmesham Park) "I hope... William will be soon as well as ever. His working a footstool for Chawton is a most agreeable surprise to me, and I am sure his Grandmama will value it very much as a proof of his affection and industry - but we shall never have the heart to put our feet upon it." Jane's warm regard for her nephew was undiminished when he was 19, writing "William and I are the best of friends. I love him very much. Everything is so natural about him, his affections, his manners and his drollery. He entertains and interests us extremely."++Marginal tears, creases and time stains, one or two with water stains

ENGLISH SCHOOL, EARLY 19TH CENTURY PORTRAIT OF MISS ELIZABETH PIGOT OF SOUTHWELL bust length in a dark blue dress and lace cap with ribbons, oil on canvas, 74 x 61cmIllustrated: Boyes (M), Love Without Wings a Biography of Elizabeth Pigot, Derby 1988, p60.Elizabeth Pigot (1783-1866) of Southwell was seven years older than Byron when they met. His mother had rented Burgage Manor as they were obliged to let Newstead Abbey. In Southwell, the small town Byron described as "full of parsons", Elizabeth Pigot at twenty one was a lively intelligent and self assured young woman, an amateur watercolourist and keenly interested in literature. They soon became affectionate friends, exchanging letters and books while Byron was away at Cambridge. His one confidante in the area, she did much to ensure the appearance of Byron's first published work, Fugitive Pieces printed locally in Newark in November 1806.After Byron's death she was of invaluable assistance to his first biographer, Thomas Moore and corresponded with publisher John Murray. The present portrait remained in the possession of the Pigot/Becher family until it was acquired privately by the present vendor. When the collection of books and papers of the Pigot family was sold at Sotheby's on July 19, 1993, the picture was illustrated in the catalogue introduction but not included in the sale.++Lined in probably the later 19th or early 20th c, on the stretcher an old stencilled auctioneer's stock number (1116 CF). ENGLISH SCHOOL, 1800-1810 PORTRAIT OF AN OFFICER bust length, oil on panel, oval, 30 x 23cmThe style of the sitter's single breasted tunic and lace at the throat dates the present portrait to the first decade of the 19th century or thereabouts. The relatively plain uniform and black epaulette is of the type worn by some, but not all, of the many penal corps that served in the West Indies. The officer's cross belt shows no regimental inscription.++The medium a little thin in places and with some possible retouching, the varnish requiring a light clean, the panel not warped or split, the giltwood cavetto frame regilt in a bronzing paint and larger chip on edge of frame at 8 o'clock

FOLLOWER OF THOMAS HICKEY PORTRAIT OF A GENTLEMAN small full length in black stock, red coat, yellow breeches and waistcoat, his tricorn on a cannon before a tent in Indian landscape with a fort in the distance, a letter in his left hand addressed J Wallerich Bombay, oil on canvas, oval, 44 x 35cmThe sitter, whose identity may be established on removal of the 'strengthening' of the signature would, it seems safe to assume, have either been a civilian of the Bombay Presidency or an Officer of the same in undress. The tent, a reference to service in the field, cannon and fort taken together point to his involvement in some way with a siege operation. There were several such sieges in the first Anglo-Maratha war, 1775-1782, including that of the great fortress of Gwalior in 1780.++The support somewhat brittle possibly as a consequence of damp and with light overall craqueleur, some retouching, the inscription on the envelope strengthened and somewhat indistinct and difficult to decipher, on what maybe the original stretchers and in contemporary or near contemporary gadrooned gilt frame

A FRAGMENT OF CRIMSON DAMASK OF THE NEWLYWED BYRONS' BED HANGINGS FROM HALNABY HALL, LATE 18TH/EARLY 19TH C approximately 4 x 47cmProvenance: John Todd, by whom acquired with his purchase of Halnaby Hall and estate from Sir John Milbanke in 1843; thence by descent at Halnaby to Lady C J C Wilson-Todd, nee Russell (1860-1948); her nephew, Brigadier General Henry Pelham Burn and his wife Mrs Katherine Eileen Staveley Pelham Burn, nee Staveley-Hill (1903-1989) by who given to the present vendor in November 1974.Illustrated: The bed and it's hangings were photographed in situ at Halnaby Hall for the Country Life article published April 8, 1933.After an engagement of four months from September-December 1814, Byron and Annabella Milbanke were married on January 2nd, 1815. The honeymoon was spent at the Milbanke seat Halnaby Hall in Yorkshire. In addition to Lady Byron's Statement and Narrative in connection with the subsequent separation there are the accounts of servants and others including Samuel Rogers who recalled reading in Lord Byron's own destroyed memoirs: "on his marriage-night, Byron suddenly started out of his first sleep: a taper which burned in the room, was casting a ruddy glare through the crimson curtains of the bed; and he could not help exclaiming, in a voice so loud as to awaken Lady Byron "Good God I am surely in hell!" Writing of the morning after, Annabella recorded "Perhaps the deadliest chill that ever fell on the morning after my wedding day; he was late in appearing, but as soon as he came down stairs I went to him in the Library. With the most forbidding aspect and in the tone of cold sarcasm, he said, "It is too late now - it's done you should have thought of it sooner". Lady Byron's Statements were written a year or more after the events of that ill fated three weeks at Halnaby at the request of her lawyers. Matters of fact are probably to be relied upon but less confidence can be attached to certain inferences: "One night in bed he said he would tell me to what he alluded as preying upon his mind, if it were not another person's secret. I asked if Augusta knew it. He replied with the greatest horror "O for God's sake don't ask her." He said he never ought to have married me, on account of former circumstances... he absented himself from me during the greater part of the day at Halnaby..." Later, in the same Statement: "He used to get up almost every night, and walk up and down the Long Gallery in a state of horror and agitation which led me to apprehend he would realise his repeated threats of suicide..." and later that night, or another night "....after he had been walking up and down the Long Gallery at Halnaby like a maniac and he returned to bed I laid my head upon his shoulder and he said you should have a softer pillow than my heart".++Good condition
