A PAIR OF BERLIN VASES AND COVERS of ogee form with gilt ram`s head handles bound with blue ribbons, finely painted to either side with 18th century scenes of rural courtship and scattered groups of flowers, the fenestrated cover with gilt leaves and surmounted by a cluster of puce and yellow peonies, on waisted base and circular gilt foot, 64cm h, sceptre mark, late 19th c ++First vase, one of the smaller of the two sizes of projecting leaves at the top of the foot chipped, slight wear to the gilding. Petals of the three flowers on the cover slightly chipped. Second vase - one ram`s horn with old restoration at the point, largest of the three flowers on the cover chipped, one of the projecting leaves around the base of the cover with old restoration. Consigned by executors of a local estate.

Reynolds evident pleasure in his portrait of Mrs Bonfoy was such that "it was one of the first of his works to be engraved as a mezzotint, despite the obscurity of the sitter" (N Penny quoted by D Mannings in Sir Joshua Reynolds, Complete Catalogue of his Paintings 2000, no 200, pp94-5). ++++

A WORLD WAR TWO FAIRBAIRN-SYKES FIGHTING KNIFE AND SHEATH first pattern, by Wilkinson Sword Co Ltd London with etched ricasso and two inch crossguard, it and the hilt nickel plated, length of blade 17.5cm, the leather sheath with wings, plated press stud and chape ++In good entirely original condition, the blade long protected by a film of petroleum jelly, the grip with some old ingrained black marks and dirt, the sheath in good condition with dent on the front of the chape. Collection of 1966-67 season Manchester United football programmes (H+A), Championship winning season, the homes consist of 21 league, 2 F.A. Cup and a special edition for the away match @ Highbury which was the first division 1 match to be televised on closed-circuit T.V. The aways are a complete set of 21 plus the scarce postponed issue at Newcastle United dated 7th January 1967. All home and away programmes have the tokens intact and the first home v W.B.A. has the seasons token sheet still attached, this fine set is housed in a holder with individual windows. Cup and Friendly games against Benfica & First Vienna, All programmes in this fine set have their token intact and have no writing. Good condition. (27)

A rare 1875/76 Rugby Football Union Laws of The Game – large notice setting out 59 rules and laws governing the game c/w diagram of the pitch - with interesting variations on the maul, ruck, throw ins, try and goal, Umpires and Captains involvement etc – published by “The Cricket Press” 5 Hind Court, Fleet St London together Advertisements for the 1876 Football Annual – overall 17.5 c 12.25”. Note: It was in 1823 that William Webb Ellis invented running with the ball in hand while at Rugby School and in 1845 the first football laws were written by Rugby School pupils but one of the most significant development and formation of rugby came in 1863 when Blackheath left the Football Association. The IRB was formed in 1886 and has been the governing body ever since – hence the date of the above rules are rare find.
