CRUIKSHANK, GEORGE. ' Comic Alphabet ' by George Cruikshank (1836). Likely first edition (reissued coloured in 1837) of George Cruikshank's 1836 Comic Alphabet. Produced to aid children in learning the alphabet and printed on a single pull-out accordion-style folded page, with each letter illustrated in Cruikshank's recognisable style, often focusing on problems in British society: for example, E for Equality shows a typical upper crust dandy strolling arm-in-arm with a soot covered chimney sweep. Two Chinese porcelain blue and white Qing Dynasty vases, the first of moonflask form with pierced beast terminals, painted with figures of musicians within recessed central panels, the shoulders with flowerheads, 22cm high and a baluster vase painted with immortals in discussion within lappet-shape cartouches, the ground painted with birds and chrysanthemum, the underside with four-character mark, 20.5cm high (some losses to the terminals of the moonflask) (2) Condition ReportLight surface marks and accretions on both. Moonflask with one pierced terminal missing, the other with losses. Hairline crack to neck. Baluster vase with surface marks, imperfections in glaze. General wear and tear on both.
