An early 18th c commonplace book, n.d., inscribed with five distinct manuscripts in various hands, comprising 1) The Scot Litany, [3]pp, being a satire on both the Act of Union (1707) and the Church of England meeting the Presbyterian Church of Scotland; 2) You coman and pears [...], [2]pp of verse; 3) The new way ye lass of Pegges Mill (sic), [2]pp, a ballad of 4 stanzas; 4) The Laasst I came O'er the Muir, [2pp], a ballad of 5 stanzas; & 5) O where ha you been Lord Randal my son, [2]pp, a rendition of the Anglo-Scottish Border ballad, the remaining leaves blank, contemporary calf over boards, rubbed, worn and slightly chipped, lower-cover detached, oblong 4to Collector's palaeographic MS. African Elephon mask, also called Epa mask, of the Yoruba people, from Nigeria. Made of carved wood coated with a layer of clay and pigments. Masks of this type were used in ceremonies in honor of the ancestors; the participants danced with them mainly during periods of drought, accompanied by music and countless costumed dancers. The Epa mask comes in all shapes and sizes. Most will have a large structure on top, but others will only feature Orangon, the first defiant Yoruba king, like this piece here. Apa festivals last for several days during which sacred ceremonies are held in honor of ancestors. The mask can also be worn during funerals and rites of passage. Sir RANULPH FIENNES improvised ski goggles worn on expeditions to the North and South Poles (Similar to ones in the image of Sir Ranulph)I wore these goggles during my epic Transglobe Expedition, when a group of us circumnavigated the world on its polar axis, using only surface transport. These goggles and I travelled 52,000 miles, from the North to the South Pole, over three years. The Expedition earned us the Guinness World Record for the first successful surface circumnavigation via both geographical poles. In the Antarctic, the wind chill factor was -82 degrees Celsius, in which exposed skin freezes in under 25 seconds. The visibility was two yards. I wore five layers of clothing, and a large duvet jacket of duck down. Despite three-later footwear, mitts, caps, goggles and facemasks, the cold would cut through as though we were naked. Such a small but important part of my exhibition clothing list, but I hope these goggles find a good new home in which to live a quiet and warm retirement.Marie Curie is there for anyone with an illness theyre likely to die from, and those close to them.
