Attributed to George Engleheart [175101829] - Miniature portrait of George Hay [1753-1804], 7th Marquess of Tweeddale:- head and shoulders with powdered hair and wearing a navy blue coat, sky back ground, oval, 7cm, in a gold frame inscribed and dated 1804 to the reverse. * Notes. George Hay was a great-grandson of the 2nd Marquess of Tweeddale, and in 1787 he inherited the title of his first cousin once-removed, the 6th Marquess. He then became a Burgess of Edinburgh a year later, Lord Lieutenant of Haddingtonshire in 1794, and a Scottish representative peer in 1796. On 18 April 1785, he married Lady Hannah Maitland (a daughter of the 7th Earl of Lauderdale). As a result of the marquess's declining health, he and his wife went to France in 1802. It was here that they were captured by Napoleon's police when war was renewed between the two countries. They were imprisoned in the fortress at Verdun and the marchioness died there on 8 May 1804, as did the marquess during the following August.

Attributed to Walter Langley R.I., R.S.A., R.B.A., R.W.A. [1852 - 1922] The Toy Boat:- watercolour 92.5 x 74.5cm. * Biography Langley was a student of the Birmingham School of Art. He was the first artist, amongst the late 19th century colony (Newlyn) to take up residence in the town, in 1882, along with Edwin Harris, which heralded the birth of the Newlyn School. Langleys chosen medium was watercolour. This choice may have originally been economic, however his mastery of this medium drew a reviewer of his one man show at the Fine Art Society in 1893 to conclude 'As a master of the actual technique of watercolours, he has few living rivals. The quality of some of his work is matchless - so simple, direct and serene.

* Peter Brook [1927-2009]- Lifting Mist signed bottom and inscribed oil on canvas 91 x 122cm * Biography. Peter Brook, 'the Pennine landscape painter', was born in the winter of 1927. He taught art at Sowerby School before becoming a full time artist in his 40s. Brook has painted many areas of the British Isles including Scotland, Cornwall and the Potteries, but his first love is the Pennines, particularly in Winter. His paintings depict a vanishing world; a world of remote farmhouses, of mills, of people who inhabit the landscape. There are a number of books on Brook's work including Peter Book - The Pennine Landscape Painter. Brook lived in West Yorkshire near his beloved Pennines and favourite woods.

Scobell, Colyton, an oak and mahogany longcase clock:, the eight-day duration movement striking the hours on a bell, the twelve-inch square painted dial having black Roman numerals, floral decoration to the corners, subsidiary seconds dial and blued steel hands, signed to the centre with the maker's name Jno. Scobell, Colyton, the falseplate to the dial embossed with the dial maker's name Walker & Hughes, B/Ham, the oak case with mahogany crossbanding, mahogany canted corners and diamond panels above and below the trunk door, all inlaid with decorative stringing, the flat-topped hood with tapered pillars having brass capitals, height 194cm. * Biography John Spurway Scobell was born in July 1799, the son of Joseph & Mary, and first listed as a clockmaker in Ottery St. Mary in 1830 before moving to Colyton a few years later, a clock signed by him at the latter town is dated for 1837.

*Norman Mansbridge (1911-1993) 'MARRIAGE GUIDANCE' Signed and inscribed, pen and ink and watercolour 17.5 x 18.5cm; and four others by the same hand; Terence Parkes, 'Larry' (1927-2003) 'MOTORIST IN PRISON' Signed and inscribed, pen and ink and watercolour 36 x 31cm overall; and seven further cartoons by other hands, various sizes, all unframed (15) Norman Mansbridge was in advertising before becoming a freelance cartoonist, contributing his first drawing to Punch in 1937. After the outbreak of war, he joined the Merchant Navy and was also given a roving commission as a war artist. After the war, Mansbridge returned to work for the News Chronicle, Men Only, Sunday Times, Radio Times, Lilliput, Daily Sketch and Birmingham Post, largely producing single drawings featuring an absurdist view of normal life. In 1958 he was elected a member of the Punch Table, and became the magazine's political cartoonist. *Artist's Resale Right may apply to this lot.
