MOUNTAINEERING - EVEREST AND HILLARYSignatures of Edmund Hillary ('E.P. Hillary'), Sherpa Tenzing Norgay ('Tenzing') and nine other members of the Everest Expedition of 1953 (leader John Hunt, mountaineers Michael Westmacott, George Band, Alfred Gregory, Wilfrid Noyce, Charles Wylie, George Lowe, expedition doctor Griffith Pugh and cameraman Tom Stobart), on a pictorial postcard depicting a B.O.A.C. Argonaut Speedbird, reverse blank, 90 x 140mm., [July 1953]Footnotes:THE FIRST ASCENT OF EVEREST: SIGNATURES OF THE SUCCESSFUL 1953 EVEREST TEAM ON THEIR RETURN FLIGHT TO THE UK. The summit of Everest was reached by Hillary and Tenzing on 29 May 1953 and news of the expedition's success reached London in time to be released on the morning of the coronation of Elizabeth II on 2 June. 'On July 1, Tenzing and the British team left Delhi on a BOAC aeroplane which had been specially rerouted for them. On the way to London they stopped several times and were everywhere greeted by cheering crowds... When they stopped in Rome, as a reporter in The Times quipped, John Hunt and Tenzing came down the steps from the plane together, 'almost as if to avoid any argument about who had been the first to touch Italian soil'' (Conefrey, M., Everest 1953: the Epic Story of the First Ascent, 2014). Their arrival in Rome was captured on film by British Pathé (www.britishpathe.com). Provenance: Accompanying the Everest team on aeroplane was the recipient of our postcard, an air stewardess named Betty. A note with the lot, evidently taken from a scrapbook, confirms that 'The Expedition flew as far as Rome in the plane that Betty was serving in'.For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Pierre-Francois Lehoux (French, 1803-1892)Café a Damas signed and dated '1852 Lehoux' (lower right)oil on canvas57.1 x 44.2cm (22 1/2 x 17 3/8in).Footnotes:ProvenanceAnon. sale, Drouot-Richelieu, Paris, 27 June 2002, lot 195.A former student of Gros and Vernet, Lehoux developed his career in the fashionable field of Orientalist art. Not content with painting 'imagined' subjects from his studio, Lehoux made multiple trips to North Africa and the Middle East, most notably joining renowned Egyptologist, Jean-François Champollion's 1828 expedition to Egypt, where he stayed for two years. There is also evidence that he travelled to Syria with Alexandre de Laborde in January 1827, and ten years later reports from Count de Berton confirm Lehoux's presence in Syria and the Levant. His numerous submissions of Middle Eastern scenes to the Salon enhanced his reputation as an Orientalist artist, and these were no doubt better received as being based on first-hand experiences in these countries. Lehoux submitted regularly to the Paris Salon from 1831 onwards; aside from scenes of the French countryside (notably St Germain-en-Laye), common themes of his included views of Lebanon, and picturesque Egyptian street encounters. His paintings can be found in the museums of Amiens, Reims, Nantes, and Narbonne. In the artist's list of paintings, the only 'Café' works listed are Café a Damas (1853) and Café Egyptien (1857). It is therefore likely that the present work is the listed Café a Damas. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

She was sent to England and fitted out as flagship to Sir Edward Codrington, Commander-in-Chief Mediterranean, who took her out to join the fleet at Malta in 1826. Her first taste of action was the Battle of Navarino in October 1827 in which the Turks were defeated with extremely heavy losses and the eventual attainment of Greek Independence. From 1836-1841 HMS Asia was commanded by Captain William Fisher, travelling in the Mediterranean. There are several depictions of her, including one by Giovanni Schranz from the date of this album anchored in the Grand Harbour, Valetta, Malta in 1838 (Christie's, lot 27, 12 Nov 2014).This album, most likely compiled by an officer, is a fascinating record in watercolour and pencil of ports visited and people encountered by the artist and also some written accounts of excursions undertaken. (verso)gouache37.8 x 25.7cm (14 7/8 x 10 1/8in).Footnotes:ProvenanceWith A.M. Cunningham & Son, Hamilton, Canada.Private collection, UK.Francis (Frank) Hans Johnston was born in Toronto and studied at the Central Ontario School of Art. He was a founder member of the Group of Seven, a band of Canadian landscape painters in the early 20th century who believed that a distinct Canadian art could be developed with direct contact with nature. Other members of the group were Arthur Lismer, Frederick Varley, Tom Thomson, J. E. H. MacDonald, and Franklin Carmichael. They met when working for the design firm Grip Ltd in Toronto, Canada. They were joined by A.Y. Jackson in 1913 after they were introduced at the Arts and Letters Club of Toronto where they gathered to share their works. The Group of Seven is often considered as the first major Canadian art movement, and became popular around the world. Johnston's association with the Group of Seven was short lived and by 1921 he had left Toronto to become principal at the Winnipeg School of Art in Winnipeg, Manitoba. In 1927, he changed his name from Frank to Franz. The 'Epic of the North' is a vibrant example of Johnston's style: the angle is small with trees in the foreground, the colour palette is strong and his fascination with the qualities of light is evident. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Daniel Thomas Egerton (British, 1797-1842)Portrait of a ranchero and his horse, Mexico signed, inscribed and dated 'D.T. Egerton. Mexico.1833' (lower right) oil on canvas41 x 51.1cm (16 1/8 x 20 1/8in).Footnotes:Daniel Thomas Egerton (1797-1842) was born in London and would train at the informal Academy of famed royal physician, art patron and watercolourist Thomas Monro. Like Turner before him, under Monro, Egerton was granted access to a vast art collection and allowed to perfect his draughtsmanship as a student and copyist. Very little of his early works are still in existence, but his skill in drawing can be seen in his etched satirical illustrations for the book of 1824, Fashionable Bores or Coolers in High Life. These illustrations highlight the pomposity of life amongst the upper-classes of London and perhaps give some indication to his early disillusionment with life in London. In the same year that this was published he would begin exhibiting at the newly formed Society of British Artists, later the Royal Society of British Artists, where he would continue to show work up until 1829.In 1831 Egerton would embark on his first trip to Mexico, perhaps attracted by opportunity and adventure following the Spanish departure in 1821 or simply in search of new landscape to explore through his work. He would spend five years travelling the country, recording his findings through sketches which he would later develop into a limited series of thirteen large scale oils and watercolours. He exhibited these at the Society of British Artists between 1838-1840 upon his return from Mexico in 1836. The same scenes would also be depicted in his set of lithographs published in 1840 under the title Egerton's Views in Mexico; being a series of twelve coloured plates executed by himself from the original drawings, accompanied with a short description. This print series would prove hugely popular and went towards funding his next trip to Mexico in the same year. In 1842, after having settled on the outskirts of Mexico City, Egerton and his young companion would be murdered under suspicious circumstances. This striking portrait was painted during Egerton's first visit to Mexico and depicts the ranchero and his horse as seen from The Valley of Mexico, showing the volcanos Iztaccihuatl and Popocatepetl in the distance (the second and third highest peaks in the country). The subject of rancheros and their horses is hugely important in Mexican culture. From the beginning of the 19th century onwards, both have been described in literature and paintings as the Mexican figures par excellence. Like most popular subjects in Mexico and Latin-America, the European romanticism took them into the high social sphere, perhaps not as individuals, but as stereotyped artistic subjects. In this form the rancheros were included in the repertoire of all traveller artists, like Egerton. From a more modern point of view, this painting is a wonderful example of Egerton's understanding of Mexico, bringing together the elements of landscape, history and tradition. We are grateful to Dr Pablo Diener for his assistance with cataloguing this work. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

The Belgica set out, under the leadership of Adrien de Gerlache, from Antwerp at the end of August 1897, on what was 'one of the most fascinating of the early Antarctic expeditions and also probably the least comfortable one to have taken part in for all concerned' (Cool Antarctica website). By March 1898 the ship was stuck in the ice, forcing the crew to remain in the Antarctic over winter (including 63 days of total darkness) before eventually escaping the ice in February the following year.In the face of such adversity the expedition still managed to gather an important collection of scientific data (which had been the expedition's main goal), hugely beneficial for the following voyages to Antarctica, including that led by Roald Amundsen, who served on Belgica as first mate. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: •• Zero rated for VAT, no VAT will be added to the Hammer Price or the Buyer's Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Chinese School, Mid 19th CenturyMacau, from the South looking Northoil on canvas 44.4 x 77.5cm (17 1/2 x 30 1/2in).Footnotes:Macau is the oldest European Settlement in China, having been leased to the Portuguese in the sixteenth century as a reward in return for help with the pirates who were plaguing the South China seas. With the introduction of the Canton System in 1757 and the subsequent limiting of Chinese trade with the West until the close of the First Opium War in 1842, Macau took on an increasingly important role in the China trade. Macau was a popular subject for Chinese School artists working for a European clientele, often as part of sets of four views of the Pearl River: Macau, The Boca Tigris, Whampoa and Canton, reminding western voyagers of their journeys into the fringes of the mysterious kingdom of the Qing Emperors. The present view is taken from Penha Hill looking north along the Praia Grande, the magnificent waterfront that curves around Macau's shallow inner harbour. The Fortaleza do Monte is prominently placed on the hilltop in the centre of this painting, built by the Jesuits 1616-26 and the site of the first Portuguese Governor's Residence. Beneath the fort are two large, glistening white buildings, the Palacio and the East India Company headquarters. Further right, on the highest point of Macau, is the Guia Fortress, built around 1622-38 to give additional protection to the valuable trading settlement. This painting captures the hot and humid climate of southern China, with sunset-tinged monsoon clouds building up over the bay.For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
