D. Halford, (1865-1948) then gifted to the Rev. Percy Demuth on his death, and thence by family descent. The current owner purchased it directly from the family. George Douglas Halford was educated at Felstead School and at Keble College, Oxford. Ordained on the 16 February 1890, he went on to be vicar of St. Peter's Church, Jarrow-on-Tyne. He went to Australia in 1897 to form the first Bush Brotherhood of St. Andrew in Longreach, Queensland. The essence of the Bush Brotherhood was for several preferably young unmarried priests to live under the rules of obedience for five years in a community house in a far-flung town bringing Christian nurture to country dwellers who seldom, if ever, had the opportunity to participate in church life. He died in Brisbane in 1948. Both lots are illustrated in Halford: The Friar Bishop (Church Archivist's Press: 1998), and in which it mentions that he visited Ramsden and Carr on recommendations, page 44.

The following collection of signed sporting items were amassed by the late Hazel Coates. Hazel was a devoted Manchester United fan who represented Manchester United Ladies as a player, but she appreciated all football regardless of her loyalties, especially the social side of the club. After a severe knee injury stopped her playing, and with increasing ill health, she became quite reclusive and spent more and more time watching football on television, as well as contacting clubs and players at home and abroad. She was on first name terms with administration staff at many of them, and knew most of the staff at Old Trafford. All these signed items were personally obtained by Hazel either directly from the clubs and players or from reputable websites noted on the certificates. Sadly, Hazel died in August 2018 leading to her extensive collection coming to market.ERIC CANTONA; a pair of signed children's football boots (both signed).
Two 19th century stipple engravings, the first after George Morland and the second after Angelica Kauffman, the former approx 38 x 47cm, both framed and glazed (2). CONDITION REPORT: The first heavily foxed, the second with significant water damage with large marks and stains, both generally discoloured, framed also worn with some chips. The circular picture measures 26cm in diameter.
WILEMAN & CO; a Foley semi-porcelain teapot decorated with large flowers and an Imperial teapot with printed mark 'Late Foley, Shelley, England 7666', the first with printed marks no.7614, length 18.5cm and 23.5cm (2). CONDITION REPORT: Heavy rubbing to the gilding of the floral decorated teapot. Crazing and staining to the interior and staining and crazing also to the exterior. Rubbing to the raised parts. The Imperial teapot has several bad cracks to the body, the lid has virtually been in two with a crack running 90% of the way through spurning a 1.5 x 2cm chip to the flange, also rubbing to the gilding.

CONDITION REPORT: The first has tarnishing to the silver plate, rubbing to the gilding and surface wear throughout, also a ground area to the foot rim and rather dirty interior. The second one has extensive heavy rubbing to the gilding. Tarnishing to the silver plate and general surface wear.
A WW1 Aircraft Crystal Radio Receiver, c.1917, English, signed on plaque to lid 'W/T RECEIVER MODEL Tb. No. 587 JOHNSON & PHILIPS Ltd LONDON', magneto choke can be removed and is engraved 'RAF W/T KIDBROOK KENT No. 249' W/T'' (stands for Wireless Telegraphy), case constructed of French polished teak with nickel-plated brass fitting to outside, all parts are made of vulcanite with all lacquered brass fittings, complete with a separate case of crystals on screw-in bases, width 18cmFootnote:Most crystal sets date from the early 1920's when broadcasting first started. They were used as a cheaper alternative to the early valve and battery receivers. Before this, radio had only been developed as a form of transmitting Morse signals by spark transmitters and simple receivers that used crystals, magnetic detectors or cohers. This crystal set dates from around WW1 and was used in early aircraft for receiving Morse signals. The set has mounting brackets to the outside of the case identical to others seen on early aircraft receivers. As the receivers were so delicate they were suspended on these fittings using elastic bands to protect them from vibration.
A Rare & Important Ledger Recording the Business Transactions of 'Thornton Pickard Manufacturing Company Limited' The book starts with a pasted-down copy of the first statutory meeting of the share holders of The Thornton Pickard Manufacturing Company Limited dated May 10th, 1897. The letter, signed by G. A. Pickard, is followed by hand-written or typed minutes for every meeting. One letter of interest details the 'release of Mr J E Thornton' as one of the company directors. The letter details the concerns of the other directors at his leaving and what this might mean for the company. A very interesting document. During the period of WW1 the 21st general meeting notes 'It will be noticed that the business of the company has increased and that profits have also to some extent increased. Beyond the fact that almost the whole of the business of the company is now conducted between the company and the R.F.C.'After the war, on the 25th February, 1920 Mr Grey Pickard tells the company of the passing of his father.As the company progresses the letter heads on the typed notes change, and various members of the board join and leave. The final entry is for 16th July, 1959.Included with the lot is a number of letters to and from the directors including an original share certificate, an original copy of the articles of association of the Thornton Pickard Manufacturing Company Ltd and an invoice for advertising in the Amateur photographer journal dated 1953.
Andy Warhol (1928-1987)Two plates, from A Gold Book (See Feldman & Schellmann IV.106-124)Two offset lithographs printed in black, 1957, each on gold paper, each the full sheet, each 362 x 286mm (14 1/4 x 11 1/4in) (mounted) (2)The Gold Book (1957), in which these two plates were included, is recognised as one of the most elaborate editions by Warhol, with thirteen of the plates printed on gold paper-inspired by, according to close friend Charles Lisanby, the gold-leaf furniture lacquered with black designs that the two had seen on their trip to Bangkok. The images in the twenty-two page volume were devoted to "Boys/filles/fruits/and flowers/Shoes/Ted Carey and Edward Wallowitch" in the words of the artist. Certainly, Warhol did base the designs on photographs by Wallowitch, to whom he was romantically linked at the time. He went on to exhibit the completed plates at the Bodley Gallery in New York shortly after publication, along with his related drawings and source material for the book.The first plate in this lot, of the young man leaning, is a clear reference to James Dean, the heartthrob who had died just two years earlier in 1955. Meanwhile, the second fits in with larger themes across the book of childhood and nature. Thus the Gold Book marks the beginning of Warhol's explorations into the ideas that would preoccupy him throughout his career, including the allure of celebrity and Hollywood, childhood ideals, nature versus nurture, commercialism, sexuality and of course what people will do to chase the American dream.

Charles Rennie Mackintosh: The Modern Movement. pp 121-128 Note: In 1898, early in the career of renowned Scottish architect Charles Rennie Mackintosh (1868-1928), entrepreneur Catherine Cranston - known simply as Miss Cranston - commissioned him to furnish her new rooms at her tearooms on Argyle Street, Glasgow. Miss Cranston was to be an important patron for the young architect, who came to rely on a relatively small number of patrons throughout his career. The commission afforded Mackintosh a new freedom to experiment, whilst leading to further projects, including the Ingram Street Tea Rooms (1900) and the Willow Tea Rooms (1903) The work at Argyle Street followed on from his previous work at Miss Cranston's new Buchannan Street Tea Rooms, which had been conceived two years earlier in 1896, together with designer George Walton. In this new undertaking, however, Mackintosh found himself in a role reversal, being fully in charge of the furnishings whilst Walton was preoccupied with designing the interiors. The furniture Mackintosh designed for these new rooms exhibit a new, more robust evolution of his repertoire and established a style for much of his work up to 1900. The bold and simple aesthetic of the designs marked him out from his contemporaries, and the distinctive furniture he produced were also employed by him, for the first time, to define and separate the rooms as designed by Walton. These armchairs were designed for the men's Billiards and Smoking Rooms, which occupied the building's top two floors above the tea and luncheon rooms. The tearooms were a haven from the city for both men and women, however the Smoking and Billiards Rooms were purely a masculine domain and the design and construction of the furniture is a reflection of that fact. Combining English Arts & Crafts and Scottish vernacular design, Mackintosh produced three types of sturdy and generous seating for these rooms; a prominent ladderback armchair, its long, rectangular back rail adorned with ascending wooden slats; a cube shaped tub chair, the current example, which was a version of this chair without the tall back; and a stool, only seen in the Smoking Room from contemporary photographs. All of the furniture was either clear-varnished or dark-stained and waxed. The construction of the tub chair is traditional but the form anything but. The broad panels of sawn timber are stripped of decoration and the solid box shape is lightened with curved aprons and subtle detailing under the arms and back. Gently curved and moulded timbers to the arms and back and the distinctive tapering uprights on the angles demarcate the chair's compact, box-like composition. These details are repeated throughout the rooms, creating a balanced composition of expressive lines and simple organic shapes. The Argyle Tea Rooms closed in 1920, and much of the furniture was dispersed. These armchairs came into the possession of established Glasgow restaurateur William Smith, whose daughter passed them on to the current owner as a gift. The robust construction of these chairs has helped them withstand many years of use, however it is their beautiful and functional design, anticipating the 20th century's Modernist ethos, which has stood the test of time.
