Shingai Shoniwa / MoschinoA Stage-Worn Moschino Couture 'Golden Needle' Playsuit, 2009black acetate and Rayon fabric with golden coated plastic needles hanging in rows from the bust, as worn by Shingai for The Noisettes gig at Scala London, 11th March 2009 Labelled size IT 42, FR 38, UK 10Footnotes:ProvenanceOffered by singer, songwriter and musician, Shingai Shoniwa.About the playsuit, Shingai says: 'The show at the Scala was a pivotal moment for us [Noisettes] as we opened up for The Heavy who were huge in America. It was an incendiary performance and led to our first big American Tour. When I clocked this Moschino playsuit embellished with gold sewing needles it automatically reminded me of my grandmother. I was sent to live with her upon my father's passing when I was 9. She was an important matriarchal figure in our village not far from Lilongwe, Malawi. She was also the most skilled dressmaker and designer for miles. Gogo (Grandmother in Chichewa) and I would bond whilst I sat at the base of the sewing machine, I was her little assistant, threading needles of all shapes and sizes as she proceeded to sew up my broken heart. That year spent with Gogo cemented my desire to create as I saw how happy it made people. I'd give anything for Gogo to have been able to see me shine in an outfit so symbolic of who she was - black & gold, but she passed away when I was 15. Her legacy lives on in my style, creativity and of course my love of unique playsuits.'For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
Shingai Shoniwa / AmechiA Stage Worn Black and Red Sequin Ensemblecomprising a sequined cape top and a pair of hot pants applied with silk roses featuring, as worn on stage by Shingai in The Noisettes at Le Trabendo, Paris, 2009, and Capital FM Jingle Bell Ball at O2 Arena, London Hips 22'/56cm (2)Footnotes:ProvenanceOffered by singer, songwriter and musician, Shingai Shoniwa. This ensemble can be seen being worn here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DzHDWI_ERgsAbout the outfit Shingai says: 'I first met Amechi Ihenacho when I was living in a warehouse flat in pre-gentrified Dalston when it was a vibrant, super diverse and affordable artistic area. Amechi had a vintage shop which doubled up as his atelier and occasional bar, frequently visited by Pam Hogg, Florence Welch & Paloma Faith. I told him I wanted a cape and high-waisted shorts for an upcoming tour and when he showed me the fabric he had in mind (black sequins with giant crimson roses), I almost fainted. I first debuted the outfit at the Trabendo in Paris, it was the last night of what had been a gruelling but unforgettable and exciting European Tour with Muse. When I arrived a thousand and one red roses had been sent to me by an Italian super fan and millionaire. After the show I asked him why a thousand and one roses, he replied that the most fresh roses ever sent to a singer was a thousand to JLo, however, he felt that my talent eclipsed any singer that he had witnessed. The thousand and one roses would provide the stage decoration for our final tour that year.'For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
Vivienne Westwood and Malcolm McLarenAn 'Exposé' Seditionaries T-shirt, 1977in white jersey, red and black 'King Kong' imagery with 'Seditionaries' and Sex Pistols cartoons printed to front, unlabelled as this was a prototype and not for sale, together with an original copy of SKUM fanzine issue no.3 signed by Mark Jay, and a letter of provenance (2)Footnotes:ProvenanceThe Mark Jay Collection.Londoner Mark Jay became involved in the very beginnings of Punk's evolution. Picking up a copy of the fanzine Sniffin' Glue at an early Sex Pistols gig, he was inspired to produce his own. With the help of a couple of like-minded school friends, he created SKUM, one of the first wave of such fanzines. It lasted for seven issues and included interviews with many seminal Punk figures, including a pre-Pistols Sid Vicious (his first ever interview), a pre-Pogues Shane McGowan, reviews of The Clash by a pre-Spandau Ballet Gary Kemp and lots of content either directly related to, or commissioned by, the Sex Pistols' camp. Mark had been a regular visitor to the Sex boutique at 430 Kings Road since mid-1976 and SKUM was the only Punk fanzine to be on sale there, from issue No.1. Mark's personal collection of items from this period was therefore obtained through his close association with the groups, their offices and their entourages. On 7th June 1977, Mark was one of the few fans lucky enough to be invited to attend the Sex Pistols' legendary 'Boat Party' concert on the River Thames during celebrations for the Queen's Silver Jubilee. It was totally normal for the likes of Joe Strummer, Mick Jones or Johnny Rotten to take the time to stop and interact with their fans. This is what made the Punk movement so special and made people feel involved. Being a fanzine editor, as he was, meant Mark could be part of the dialogue that Punk was creating on a day-to-day basis. There was a unique egalitarianism which allowed teenagers 'from nowhere', like Mark, to express themselves through music, print, design and fashion and, most importantly, be seen and heard by a wide and ever-expanding audience. This T-shirt is a rare design, probably only produced in very limited numbers. Mark collaborated with Vivienne on this as she incorporated some of his Sex Pistols cartoons from SKUM 3 into the design. Mark recalls that it was perhaps around January 1977 that Vivienne first approached him about using his drawings, pre-dating Mark's design for The Story So Far poster by about seven months, a proof of which is also included in this auction. The T-shirt offered here was the first prototype to be printed and given by Vivienne to Mark for his approval.Photographs exist of Sid Vicious sporting this particular design. One was taken with Nancy, probably July-August 1977, whilst another shows him with 'Mad' Jane Crockford, later a member of the Modettes, and who was responsible for the notorious Shane McGowan ear-biting incident at the Clash's ICA gig, 23rd October 1976.Sid appears to have customised the T-shirt, as Mark does not remember seeing it without sleeves and torn across the hem as seen in Sid's example, but that is characteristic of the way he and the other Pistols 'personalised' the clothing they were given. It had been modified in a similar way to the Two Cowboys T-shirt Sid gave to Mark and offered in this sale as Lot 9.The T-Shirt is offered with an original signed copy of SKUM issue no.3 which includes the second drag version of 'The Story So Far' cartoon strip from which some of the T-Shirt's images were taken. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
The Sex PistolsA Sid Vicious Owned Westwood/McLaren SEX 'Two Cowboys' T-shirt Worn and Customised by Sid Vicious and Autographed by Johnny Rotten, 1976sleeveless white jersey with exterior seaming, three rips to front and 'SKUM' faintly inscribed twice, the back signed and inscribed by Johnny Rotten in blue felt-tip 'A True Star', unlabelled, together with an original copy of SKUM fanzine issue no.4 signed by Mark Jay and a letter of provenance (2)Footnotes:ProvenanceThe Mark Jay Collection. Please refer to Footnote for Lot 8.This t-shirt was given to Mark by Sid in exchange for letting him 'steal' two rare US punk records from Mark's record stall in Beaufort Market, Kings Road. The following week Johnny Rotten signed the shirt in his inimitable way.Mark comments: 'After interviewing Sid in 1976 when he was in seminal Punk group The Flowers of Romance for the first issue of SKUM, which turned out to be his first ever interview, I saw him regularly around the scene and became quite friendly with him. One afternoon just before Christmas 1976 he stumbled into my record stall in Beaufort Market, drunk or high on whatever and playfully tried to 'steal' a couple of rare US Punk records, by rather brazenly stuffing them inside his torn T-shirt, which happened to be this particular Cowboys one. Equally brazenly I proposed a swap - the records for his T-Shirt. To my surprise he met me on the deal by pulling off his leather jacket and T-Shirt and handing me his Cowboys one with his trademark lopsided grin. I was over the moon as this was a design that was no longer available in the shop and had not yet been re-issued, so at that time was near-impossible to find. As soon as I got home I further customised it by stencilling SKUM on it. The following week I wore it to work, and lurching into the stall again came Sid, this time accompanied by Johnny Rotten whom I had not yet met. We had a laugh about me now wearing the T-Shirt and I asked Rotten to sign it for me while I wore it. He obliged, adding the trademark sardonic 'a true star', and I also arranged an impromptu interview with him which appeared in the next issue of SKUM.Sid was not yet a Sex Pistol, but a couple of months later his new appointment was announced. He must have loved (and missed) this particular T-Shirt because very shortly after, Dennis Morris' now iconic photos of the new line-up were released featuring Sid in a similarly customised Cowboys design. Dennis gave me a large batch of prints from this session to use in issue four of SKUM.'The T-Shirt is offered with an original signed copy of SKUM issue no.4 showing Sid on the cover (and inside) in an almost identical Cowboys design. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
STEINWAY pianola-piano, first quarter of the 20th century.Measurements: 134 x 159 x 77,5 cm.Early 20th century pianola-piano with Aeolian's Metrostyle Themodist Temponamic playing system, in use between approximately 1913 and 1923. Aeolian Company mechanisms were mainly installed in pianos manufactured by the Aeolian Company, such as the Weber, Steck, Wheelock and Stroud. They were also available on Steinway pianos through an exclusive agreement. Aeolian had been under pressure to manufacture the mechanism for Steinway pianos, but Aeolian had no interest in establishing a relationship with a company it saw as direct competition. So, to satisfy Steinway, Aeolian agreed to stop promoting its Weber brand as a luxury piano firm, and also to stop sponsoring concerts by Paderewski and other great pianists of the day. The agreement also stipulated that Aeolian was to purchase a certain number of Steinway pianos per year, regardless of market demand. The mechanical piano was invented in Paris by Debain around 1850. His system consisted of adding to an upright piano a second set of hammers set in motion by a system of levers. Other pianos were later built on similar principles. The model known simply as the handle piano became very widespread in Italy and England, and from the end of the 19th century a large number of different systems were produced, which competed for the clientele of non-musician amateurs, cafés, etc. Later, the pianola, patented in 1898, would work with a compressed air mechanism.Founded in 1853 in New York by the German immigrant Heinrich E. Steinweg, who by then had already made almost five hundred pianos, Steinway & Sons was one of the main firms responsible for the development of the modern piano, especially during the forty years following its founding, when the company developed almost half of the one hundred and twenty-five patents it holds. Steinway's revolutionary designs, as well as the exceptional quality of its workmanship, earned the firm important international recognition from the very beginning. From 1855 onwards, it won gold medals at many exhibitions in the United States and Europe, most notably the Grand Gold Medal of Honour at the Paris Exposition of 1867. Steinway & Sons was the first American company to receive such a medal, and soon became the favourite of many members of the European aristocracy and the world's greatest pianists. To avoid import costs, Steinway opened its first European factory in 1880, in the German city of Hamburg. Ten years later, the company obtained its first royal warrant, from Queen Victoria of England. In the following years, Stewinway's client list would include the Prince of Wales and other members of European royalty and nobility. Soon it would also become a supplier to many other European royal houses, including Italy, Norway, Russia, Spain and Sweden, and even, in the East, to the Persian royal house.
Carpet, Calos IV. design; Royal Tapestry Factory, mid-20th century.Wool.Slight wear.Signed R.F.T.Measurements: 400 cm x 400 cm.The Royal Tapestry Factory of Santa Barbara was founded in Madrid in 1721 by Philip V, in imitation of the French royal workshops that followed the model of Colbert, to provide the pieces for the royal dependencies. Although initially the Royal Factory's production was centred on tapestries, the production of carpets soon became its means of survival, and therefore the basis of its production. It seems that it was in 1786 that the first of the Stuycks, the family who would exercise the artistic direction of the factory until the beginning of the 21st century, asked the king for permission for a nephew to weave "Turkish" carpets (knotted, not woven like a tapestry). These first carpets were in the Charles IV style, a language very much indebted to French classicism, with Hispanic touches and sometimes certain influences of the Empire style.
Salamanca wastepaper basket; 17th and 19th century.Carved and gilded wood and bone.It presents restorations and damages caused by xylophages.Measurements: 51 x 90 x 38 cm; 81 x 107 x 41 cm (total).Salamanca wastepaper basket with a prismatic and robust structure. The sides have the cut-out profile fittings typical of the period, concentrating the decoration on the sample. The sample has a symmetrical composition on three levels which, at first glance, appears remarkably complicated due to the tendency towards horror vacui and the multiplicity of ornamental elements used. The white of the bone elements, some with polychrome details, and other gilded elements stand out, in clear contrast to the wood. The sample is divided into three levels, with a hinged door in the centre and three small drawers inside. This type of desk would continue to be made in Spain until the 19th century due to the strength and appreciation that was (and still is) given to the typology, related to other European examples but always maintaining a series of very particular characteristics and lines. The taquillón, made in the 19th century, is organised in two registers, each with two drawers with its own lock. Unlike the bargueño, this base unit is decorated with carved rectangular recesses with inscribed lozenges, decorated with classical-style borders. The sides of the locker are similarly carved, repeating the proportions of the front, but without carved borders.
