The History of Lord Tyrone and Lady Beresford. Manuscript in ink "Copied from a manuscript in Lady Hamilton's possession which manuscript she had from Captain Beresford". Apparently copied by Lady Charles Somerset about 1827, according to a note loosely inserted. 80pp., small oblong 8vo., cont. green morocco with initials M.P. on upper cover. The text is that of a famous Irish ghost story which was first recorded in the 18th century by Lady Betty Cobbe, grand-daughter of Lady Beresford, and concerns two orphaned children who made a pact whereby the first of them to die would reappear to the other to prove there was life after death. The initials M.P. are those of Lady Mary Poulett who married General Lord Charles Henry Somerset (1767 - 1831) as his second wife in 1821. Lord Charles was governor of Cape Colony, South Africa from 1814 - 26.
