A Good New Hines Re-Entrant Gramophone, with Hines soundbox, electric turntable lamp, speed regulator, needle pots, 12-inch turntable with Hines transfer in dark lacquered mahogany case; an HMV model 109 gramophone, lacking soundbox, in oak case; a homemade portable gramophone with Gripper soundbox in small oak case; an HMV gramophone, lacking motor, board, arm, but retaining internal horn; and an HMV horn gramophone case with loose gooseneck tonearm. (5) Footnote: The Libertyphone was the first auto-change portable and the Pye Black Box was the first official Hi-Fi.

Cased CMG (Order of St Michael & St George) awarded to Major Clarence Roy Turner for his valuable services for Railway in the Gold Coast. Note: Major Turner also served in the 43rd Australian Field Artillery Battery and was wounded at Gallipoli during the First World War before becoming a civil servant. THREE GOOD JAPANESE MEIJI PERIOD CARVED IVORY & WOOD AND METAL MANJU NETSUKES, The first a carved ivory roundel or button carved in the form of an owl, 3cm & artist signed, the second a carved hardwood roundel containing a carved metal insert depicting flora, 3.2cm, the last and largest a carved ivory & shibayama manju netsuke, the face of the netsuke inlaid using semi precious stones to depict a seated figure holding a hannya mask to his face, the reverse with an inset signature seal, 4.6cm. ^ Unusual naval officer’s dirk, first quarter of the 19th century, blade 13” etched with crowned fouled anchor and foliage (worn) gilt brass mounts comprising crosspiece in the form of anchor flukes, lion’s head pommel (knuckle chain missing) and diced ivory grip. Good condition, retains most original gilt finish.
^ Unusual naval officer’s sword for Flag officer, Captain or Commander, first quarter of the 19th century, straight pipe back single edge blade 30” cut with a single fuller, faintly etched with crowned GR, fouled anchor, naval trophy and foliage, gilt brass stirrup hilt, langets chiselled with fouled anchors in relief, lion’s head pommel with mane chiselled in prominent high relief, wire bound ivory grip. Good condition, some age wear overall, retaining most original gilding.
^ 1831 Pattern general officer’s sword of Major Richard Baker, First Portuguese Regiment of Queen’s Lancers, British Auxiliary Legion, regulation blade 30” etched with crowned WIVR, oak wreaths, crossed sword and baton, and A LINNEY, 23 Regent St London Warranted, regulation hilt with gilt brass mounts, 2 piece ivory grips, bullion dress knot (well worn), in its lacquered gilt brass regulation scabbard engraved ‘SWORD OF MAJOR RICHARD BAKER, FIRST REGIMENT OF LANCERS, BRITISH AUXULIARY LEGION, PORTUGAL AND SPAIN, 1833 TO 1837’. Fine condition. Note: sold with extensive research material. Amos Linney moved to 23 Regent St in 1834. Richard Baker born 1810, commissioned Lieut. 1st Portuguese Queen’s Lancers Nov.1832; entered Spanish Service as Capt. July 1835 in same regiment; promoted Major March 1837. Joined the New Zealand Company 1839, emigrated there, one of the first settlers in Wellington (Baker Street named after him), district magistrate, commanded local volunteer cavalry corps, watercolour painter, died 1854.
3x assorted walking sticks each with a silver top; the first hallmarked for London 1916 maker EN, male Malacca shaft wound with entwined white painted leather; 2 others London early 1900’s with indistinct year letter; and 2 further walking sticks with a little damage. Average good condition.
5x assorted walking sticks mostly with silver ferules, the first with indistinct hall marks engraved AED (for Arthur Dunk, well-known Hastings auctioneer at the Claremont rooms); another engraved J Webb in memory of George Dec. 8th 1895; another engraved Chas Orvis, The Kennels, Catsfield, by C A Laundon; and 2 others. Average good condition.
3x assorted walking sticks c.1900, the first with nielloed silver handle inscribed Caucuses in Cyrillic, horn tip; the second with Burmese or Siamese silver top embossed with foliage and engraved with an inscription, bone tip; the last Chinese of tapered hardwood and inlaid with soft metal pins to depict a pair of dragons. Average good condition.
Native American beadwork, probably first half of the 20th century, decorated leather pouch overall height 21” (excluding fringe), panels 6.75” x 5.75” with coloured floral patterns on both sides against a white beaded background, leather fringe with seed head and clear beadwork, Good condition.
5x assorted native carved wooden spoons, possibly Native American c.1900, average 12” to 7”, the first with excellent age patina, curved stem carved with chevrons; another with bird’s head; another with broad bowl and hooked finial; the longest with Haida inked decoration; the last (possibly African) carved with a geometrical panel. Average good condition.
Native American beadwork comprising a collar 11” x 2.5” possibly Ojibwa first half of the 20th century, depicting flowers on a white beaded ground; a band of elaborate beadwork 14.5” x 3” on a cotton backing possibly first half of the 20th century; 2 leather pouches with fringe and beadwork; a panel of beadwork, 9.5” x 2”; and a painted leather souvenir. Average good condition
The Pollock Prize medal, for the Royal Military Academy, profile image of Major General Sir George Pollock, Cabul 1842, by B. Wyon, the reverse inscribed 'Founded by the British Inhabitants of Calcutta....awarded to the most distinguished cadet of the season', 43mm diameter, 64g, in a fitted case; The Armstrong Memorial Prize medal, by F. Bowcher, depicting Colonel R.Y. Armstrong C.B. Royal Engineers, awarded to Under Officer A. Carrow, July 1906, 56mm diameter, 106.4g.A. Carrow is recorded to have been awarded the Pollock Prize in July 1906, and although the Prize medal is not named it is assumed the Pollock Medal in this lot also belonged to A Carrow. The Pollock Prize was first awarded twice a year in 1847 to cadets at The East India Company's Military Seminary in Addiscombe. From 1861 the prize was awarded to cadets at the Royal Military Academy at Woolwich.(2)

δ Elisabeth Frink (1930-1993)Cormorant Watercolour and pencil on paper, 1971, signed and dated in pencil, sheet 430 x 570mm (17 x 22 1/2in) (framed) British artist Elisabeth Frink was occupied by the themes and symbolism of birds in her work since she first exhibited publicly in 1951. For her, it was specifically that moment just before or during flight that was fascinating. This inspired her continuous return to the subject across her sculpture, painting and printing for the next two decades. The present artwork exemplifies the power of such an image. Here a cormorant stands in a stormy landscape, looking wildly around at its surroundings while spreading its wings to launch into a foreboding sky. In the artist's opinion, it is in these moments that birds are their most expressionist in feeling because they are about to attempt to overcome the forces of nature and gravity that keep man firmly in his earthbound state. Such an idea is both beautiful and pertinent, as it provides the perfect metaphor for her viewer to explore one's struggle to surpass our own limitations - to soar to freedom, spiritual ascendancy and success - while also acknowledging the uncertainty that comes with doing so.
