WWII German Luftwaffe life jacket 'Schwimmweste' type 10.30 Siezed from a captured pilot, Lt Kreigen, 26th August 1940 Together with provenance in the form of a contemporary letter from 1940, written by the detainer of the pilot and a family photograph of him.The Battle of Britain website lists the crash under the August 26th entries:“Do 17Z-2 U5+TR of 7/KG2 shot down by 1 (RCAF) Squadron after bombing Debden airfield at 15.30. Aircraft crashed at Cole End, Wimbish, Lt P. Kreiger, Uffz S. Illing, Uffz K. Winter and Gefr G. Schneider all baled out and captured.”The recipient of the letter and the schwimmweste or 'Mae West' as it is referred to, is the vendor's father Harry Leach. 'Nell' was his sister and it is believed that the person who captured the German pilot and wrote the letter was Nell's husband Fred. The letter gives a full account of Fred's encounter with, and capture of LT Kreigen. Kreiger and Kreigen are both derivatives of the German name meaning warrior or soldier. The 'Battle of Britain' website lists the pilot as Kreiger, the label on the jacket possibly has a typo or the correct spelling was lost in translation. Fred and Nell lived very near to Saffron Walden. Debden airbase, just 3 miles southeast of Saffron Walden, was an RAF Fighter Station and an important German target. The Germans lost 43 aircraft on this day. Repeated heavy daytime losses forced a change in German tactics and night raids began. Prior to this, Hitler had insisted that London was not to be bombed. Although the 7th September is considered to be the start of the Blitz, the first bomb fell on the city of London the previous night, 25th August.Fred details his capture of Kreigen in very-matter-of-fact terms, although the pilot may not have put up much resistance, he was armed with a weapon and much younger than Fred, it was still a very brave thing to do."The pilot landed about 30 yards from me when he hit the ground I at once got across him as he lay on the ground and took his fireworks away from his belt before he knew where he was" The accompanying photo was taken in 1957 and shows Fred, Nell and Harry with younger members of their family.Read the accompanying blog to this lot here. This jacket is in very good condition. The material is soft and the inflation tube has not deteriorated.

Lot 3301

A 1917 Nurse wartime sketch album used by a WW1 nurse to aid traumatised soldiers, lost to the world for more than 100 years, page after page is taken up by sketches and words put there by heroes from the trenches, one cartoon, drawn by soldier Pte Coles, shows a wounded man, bandaged from head to foot and on crutches, talking to a nurse. He says, ‘I’m feeling a lot better today’. She replies, ‘And you’re looking much better too’. The album, a forgotten piece of military history, belonged to Jean Thomson, a nurse at Merryflats War Hospital in Govan, Glasgow, during 1917/18, formerly a poorhouse, it was requisitioned in 1914 as a military hospital. Jean encouraged patients to draw and write in the album to aid rehabilitation. According to family she worked with soldiers who’d suffered shell shock sparked by battle stress. Symptoms included tremors, loss of sight or hearing and extreme fatigue. Jean’s album shows she was no stranger to ‘trench foot’ either. This horrible condition, first reported during combat in Russia in 1812, occurred when soldiers wore tight boots for prolonged periods in damp conditions. Fungal infections led to tingling, itching, swelling and, at worst, decay. However, the bulldog spirit shines bright again in a cartoon entitled ‘Trench Feet’. It depicts a dog sporting an enormously swollen and bandaged paw alongside the words, ‘It’s better to be a good old has been than a never was’. Humility comes to the fore with every turn of the page. In 1917 Pte Smith wrote a prayer, ‘Grace After Meals - Thank the Lord for what we have had. But if there had been more we should have been glad. But as the times have been so bad we will make a shift for what we have had - Amen. Further details: Fantastic provenance, and only age related wear to the album and pages, minor loss and wear etc. A true piece of History!

This method I have since been induced to alter ...". With 2 books of related interest. (3)CONAN DOYLE, Arthur (1859-1930), and others.  The Case for Spirit Photography ... [From upper wrapper:]  With Corroborative Evidence by Experienced Researchers and Photographers. London: Hutchinson & Co., [1922]. 8vo (216 x 140mm). Half title, 16 photographed plates, one-page announcement by the "Society for the Study of Supernormal Pictures" at the end (a few leaves and plates loose, some spotting and light browning to text leaves). Original wrappers printed in green (lacks backstrip but replaced with later tape, frayed with some loss of letters to lower wrapper). Provenance: W. H. Smith (signature on title). FIRST EDITION. RARE. "The publicity given to the recent attacks on Psychic Photography has been out of all proportion to their scientific value as evidence. When Sir Arthur Conan Doyle arrived in the country, after his successful tour in America, the controversy was in full swing. With characteristic promptitude he immediately decided to meet these negative attacks by a positive counter-attack, and this volume is the outcome of that decision" (from Fred Barlow's Preface). The "recent attacks" mentioned in the preface refer to Harry Price's exposure of William Hope's forgeries in February 1922. Hope was a prominent member of the spiritualist group known as the "Crewe Circle" and a leading practitioner of "spiritual photography". Price, who, being a member both of the Society for Psychical Research and the Magic Circle, was well-qualified to adjudicate on such matters, wrote of him in his SPR report, "William Hope has been found guilty of deliberately substituting his own plates for those of a sitter ... It implies that the medium brings to the sitting a duplicate slide and faked plates for fraudulent purposes." Green & Gibson B31a. A few remaining copies of this limited edition are available from Taschen priced at £7,500 each. The book was issued with a choice of four different dust-jackets. With the original tripod bookstand designed by Marc Newson (b.1963, leading Australian industrial designer and artist who is, according to Alice Rawsthorn, "one of the most influential designers of his generation"), and the accompanying booklet (4to (358 x 265), original coloured pictorial wrappers) which includes introductions by Graydon Carter and Annie Leibovitz, an interview with the photographer by Hans Ulrich Obrist, and a full index of each photograph with descriptive text, the text in English, German and French. "I like the idea that you can leave the book open to a page and let it stand for days and then change it. It's a collection of prints, although there are rhymes in the pagination. There are riffs. The first two pictures, the portrait of Queen Elizabeth and the photograph of Richard Nixon's helicopter lifting off from the White House lawn after Nixon had resigned as President, were placed where they are because I began thinking of them as bookends for my entire career" (from Annie Leibovitz's introduction). "This much we know: Annie Leibovitz is one of the truly great photographers of our time. Her pictures, superlative in their honesty, range from spontaneously captured reportage to exactingly prepared conceptual portraits, exquisite in their delicate intimacy, but also often deeply visceral in impact" (from the introduction to Hans Ulrich Obrist's interview). The following photographs are illustrated: photograph no. 1) Richard Nixon leaving the White House after his resignation as President, Washington, D.C., 1974; 2) Queen Elizabeth II, The White Drawing Room, Buckingham Palace, London, 2007; 8) Andy Warhol, New York City, 1976; 15) Donald and (a pregnant) Melania Trump, Palm Beach Airport, Florida, 2006; 56) Virginia Woolf's writing desk, Monk's House, Rodmell, East Sussex, England, 2009; 57) The River Ouse, Rodmell, East Sussex, England, 2009, where Virginia Woolf took her own life by drowning on March 28, 1941; and 65) John Lennon and Yoko Ono, New York City, December 8, 1980, the photograph taken just a few hours before John Lennon was fatally shot outside his residence in New York. The original packaging for the bookstand is included in the lot.
