Canaan. Speed (John), Thomas Bassett & Richard Chiswell, 1651 [1676], hand-coloured engraved map, inset plan of Jerusalem.41.5cm x 54.5cm (16.25in x 21.5in)Footnote: * Speede's maps usually showed the land as it was experienced. Even if not to the levels of accuracy of a modern ordnance survey map, they strove to show the locations as they related to each other and the land on which they were situated. From the first though, Canaan was different. Canaan is a land created in two places. The first is on the ground, in the towns, rivers, mountains and other features of geography, both natural and man-made. The other is in the mind, particularly of Christians, who will be comparing the land they see with that they first experienced through the words of the Bible. This was especially true for readers of the King James Version for whom this map was an integral part of their reading of the Bible. The map was first featured in the Geneva Bible as published by Robert Barker. Speede was still a tailor when he first became involved with this map - his first cartographic work. John More (credited on the map) did the first work on it whilst a Fellow of Christ's, Cambridge. After his death in 1592 it was passed to Speede who finished it and received a licence to print and insert it in the KJV for ten years from 1610. By the time the KJV was first published in 1611, Speede was already one of the most important cartographers in England, and busily working on his famous county maps, many of which feature in this sale. Interestingly, this map did not feature in the first issue of Speede's Prospect, but was added later. Despite current knowledge, Speede's map contains oddities to the modern eye. Most specifically the coastline follows the Ptolemaic slump, despite the actual coastline being known. This is part of the purpose of this map. The map is not the territory. The map does not even follow Ptolemy's desire to be accurate (within the limits of contemporary knowledge), but rather to use Ptolemy's coast as a short-hand to evoke the era. This map sets out to create a place that never existed, it is not a tool for explorers of anything but the words on a page. Speede's map shows events, places, people, and details from across Biblical history. The Dead Sea is the Lake of Sodom, Pharoah's armies (equipped as expected in Jacobean armour) drown even as Judas hangs himself. Ancient Kingdoms share space with Jewish settlements. The inset map of Jerusalem lists important places in the story of the Passion, but they are not a pilgrim map, rather a reminder, a positioning in a space not physical but mental. Despite all this, there are suggestions that the map inhabits a 'real' world and is not merely a fairytale realm. The new habit for framing the map in longitude and latitude is followed. Whilst a traveller could never hope to find a location using them, it reminds the reader that the place (and by extension the events depicted and remembered) is real. The leviathan frolics in the depths but this is not to say there are literal monsters beneath the waves (nor even to recall Jonah's whale) but rather to remind of the troubles of travel. Even the choice of name is suggestive. Whilst Christians today might accept 'The Holy Land', to a Protestant this would be redolent of Papistry, whilst other more accurate names might be overly Jewish in suggestion. Canaan is the ancient name, all other names (whether Israel or Outremer) are tranistory compared to the Biblical truth which underlies all. In Protestant eyes, the holy places had no intrinsic spiritual value and visiting them was unnecessary - as the map reminds us, ''Nether in Ierusalem, nor in this Mountaine shal ye worship''. The idea of pilgrimage was, if not anathema, highly suspicious. Whilst English ships crossed the seas, they did so for trade, and there was little to trade in Palestine - not even treacle in Gilead. For the strict Protestant Englishman, the critical thing was your relationship with God through Christ, the rest was confusing trappings which got in the way. This map was all you needed to give a context to your reading of the Bible, and the experience of the Word would open you to God's Grace.Condition report: The map is in good, original condition. There is some light time staining and browning around the edges of the paper near the mount board. There are one or two minor tears and holes around the edges of the paper and one small hole in the paper within the map. There is some creasing and cockling across the paper and some minor spots of foxing across the sheet. The map is framed and glazed.

Lot 1070

A SUPERB GEORGE I SILVER CIRCULAR PEDESTAL BOWL 7.75 ins diameter London 1721, maker James Smith, weighs 17 ozsThe arms on this bowl are engraved ‘argent a maunch sable; there is no crest as the scallop above the shield is part of the ornamental baroque cartouche, as are the figures of the Roman goddess Minerva.  The ‘maunch’ represents a medieval sleeve and as a device it is seen in the earliest rolls of arms going back at least to the 13th century. With these silver and black tinctures it is borne by a number of branches of the ancient family of HASTINGS, for which family a barony was first created in 1290 by Edward I and a marquessate (for Rawdon-Hastings) in 1816, with various other titles in the centuries between.  There is no indication of rank on the silver so this could have been made for any number of Hastings descendants.

Studio of Daniel Mytens (?Delft 1590-1644 The Hague)Portrait of King Charles I, three-quarter-length, standing, wearing a brown and gold doublet and hose, the sash of the Order of the Garter and the Great George, holding a pair of gloves, beside the Scottish crown laid on a table oil on canvas 109.2 x 83.4cm (43 x 32 13/16in).Footnotes:Although the composition of the present portrait does not appear to be directly derived from any hitherto known portrait of the King, it can be related to a number of portraits of King Charles I by Daniel Mytens. The head in the present work can be compared to the Mytens in the Royal Collection which is signed and dated 1628. The composition which shows the Great George suspended from the Garter sash is known through engravings, published by Franciscus van Hoeye after Mytens. Perhaps most interesting of all is the presence of what must be a representation of the Scottish royal crown, which is unique to the present portrait, all the other portraits of Charles I that depict him with a crown having shown him beside the Tudor Crown, otherwise known as the Crown of Henry VIII. Although Charles succeeded his father in 1625, his long-delayed and long-awaited Scottish coronation did not take place until he finally returned to his native Scotland in the early summer of 1633, making a magnificent civic entry, the first such royal pageant in Edinburgh since 1590. It is possible that the present portrait was commissioned to record this event and is a rare contemporary depiction of the Scottish crown. The regalia known as the Honours of Scotland, which include the Crown along with the Sceptre and Sword of State, unlike their English equivalent of the time, still exist. Following the Act of Union of 1707, which unified the Kingdom of Scotland and the Kingdom of England to form the Kingdom of Great Britain, and having no ceremonial role to play in the proceedings of the new Parliament of Great Britain in London, the Honours were locked away in Edinburgh Castle. There they remained all but forgotten in a chest until 1818, when a group of people including Sir Walter Scott set out to find them to great public acclaim. Charles's complicated relationship with Scotland was summarized by the historian C. V. Wedgwood: 'It was not the least of this king's misfortunes that he was always too much of a Scotsman for England and too much of an Englishman for Scotland. In many ways he was the type of the absentee Scot, rootless in England and uprooted in Scotland.'For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Samuel Prout FSA, OWS (Plymouth 1783-1852 London)An album of 33 drawings from a tour to the Rhine including views of Huy (5), Liege, Cologne (5), Coblentz (3), Lahnstein, Lendersdorf, Andernach (4), Kapelle, Ehrenbreitstein, Rhinfels, Katzen, Braubach, Bacharach (2), Lahn-eck, Oberwessel, La Tour des Rats, Hattersheim and Wiesbdenmost inscribedgraphite on wove paper26 x 17.5cm (10 1/4 x 6 7/8in).some slightly smaller (album)Footnotes:ProvenancePrivate Collection, UKThese drawings have been tipped into an album of paper watermarked for 1822, the year after Prout's first journey down the Rhine which is well documented in a Goldsmith's Almanac for 1821. He left Dover in late July and returned home in October. Although Prout became better known for picturesque urban scenes, these drawings show that he was clearly an able landscape artist. His lithographed Illustrations of the Rhine were published between 1822 and 1826.For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Peter Gertner (? circa 1495- after 1541 Nuremberg)The head of Saint John the Baptist oil on panel, a fragment19.2 x 44.8cm (7 9/16 x 17 5/8in).Footnotes:ProvenancePrivate Collection, Vienna, until 1908Private Collection, UKLiteratureK. Löcher, 'Peter Gertner - ein Nürnberger Meister als Hofmaler des Pfalzgrafen Ottheinrich in Neuberg an der Donau', in Neuburger Kollektaneenblatt, CXLI, Neuburg an der Donau, 1993, pp. 5, 44-7 and 54-5, fig. 29, ill. This image of John the Baptist's head is a fragment of a larger composition which was cut up at some point after 1908, the year in which it was first brought to scholarly attention in a private Viennese collection. The figure of Salome, whose gloved hands are visible holding the dish, was divorced from its original, biblical context by removing the present fragment and selling the bust-length portrait separately as a depiction of a princess from the House of Wittelsbach. This latter picture passed through the collection of Georg Schäfer in Schweinfurt (see: B. Bushart, Altdeutsche Bilder Der Sammlung Georg Schäfer Schweinfurt, Schweinfurt, 1985, figs. 10 and 11, p. 55) and was later sold at Koller, Zürich (22 September 2006, lot 3009).For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

According to McKay and Roberts (see literature), Gifford and John Hoppner were good friends; The Maeviad was dedicated to the artist. Gifford left his house in London to Hoppner's widow and bequeathed a sum of money to the artist's children.
