Individually signed by Steven Gerrard, Sami Hyypia, Xabi Alonso, Harry Kewell, Fernando Morientes, Peter Crouch, Boudewijn Zenden, Vladimir Smicer, etc.. The signatures were obtained at Melwood Training facility between 27th January and 6th February 2006. Very attractively presented, matted in red, framed in black and glazed to an overall size of 33.5 x 35.5. Together with a second matted in red framed and glazed set, 21 x 19.5, comprising an official printed Champions League final 2005 8 x 12 poster, Istanbul, Ataturk Olimpiyat Stadi, 25th May, matted alongside two certificates. The first issued by the Liverpool Football Club, signed by Dave Singleton, Vice-President of Reebok Europe and by Rafael Benitez Liverpool´s Manager, addressed to supporteers and referring to this gift box, and the second being a certificate of authenticity of the signed shirt. Also including a conmmemorative 13 x 16.5 red attractive box containing a colourful magazine entitled The History of the 49 Finals, and showing to the inside cover an attractive large colour photograph of Gerrard holding the cup. [LOUIS XVIII]: (1755-1824) King of France 1814-15 & 1815-24, with a brief interruption during the Hundred Days in 1815. D.S., `Louis´, secretarial, vellum, one page, 14 x 10 (36 x 25 cm), Paris, first of April 1817, to Alexandre de Folquier, in French. The partially printed document being the appointment of officer Folquier as Marshal of Logis of the Guards Corps. Countersigned by HENRI JACQUES GUILLAUME CLARKE (1765-1818) Marshal of France in 1816, one of six created under King Louis XVIII from 1815-24. Duc de Feltre and Minister of War under Napoleon. Signed at the base `M[arech]al Duc de Feltre´, beneath the printed text "Minister Secretary of State and War". Bearing a large and attractive paper seal affixed to the front in very fine condition. VG £100-150
NOBEL ALFRED: (1833-1896) Swedish Chemist, Inventor & Philanthropist. Known for his invention of dynamite, Nobel bequeathed his fortune to institute the Nobel Prizes. An extremely rare A.L.S., A Nobel, two pages, 8vo, Brussels, 17th October 1895, to Oscar Ljungstrom, in Swedish. Nobel writes concerning the development of a ball sledge and other apparatus, stating, in part, 'It is hard for me to believe that they in America have not made any attempts in this direction about which you first and foremost have to be informed. With this, I will not say the task cannot succeed although until now it has failed but there is a big saving of time, work and money with the knowhow of what others have done before. In pure mechanical direction, many very ingenious persons are working. The piece of the engine can be directed to make it good enough but it is maybe not necessary as the combustion possibilities are highly significant, which is shown in explosions in the mine, even without marsh gas' and concluding 'My coal engine is principally very interesting. It opens a new horizon. I know it is now in good hands'. A letter of good scientific content. Some light overall age toning and a couple of minor stains to the text, not affecting the legibility of the letter, an area of paper loss to the lower corner of the first page and a few neat splits at some folds and a few extremely minor pinholes to some corners, about G £5000-8000 Oscar Ljungstrom (1868-1943) Swedish Archivist at the Urban Engineering office in Stockholm. Brother of Fredrik Ljungstrom (1875-1964) Swedish Engineer & Inventor who was mentored by, and later collaborated with, Alfred Nobel. The present letter is written a little over a month before Alfred Nobel signed his last will and testament at the Swedish-Norwegian Club in Paris. In his will the chemist set aside the bulk of his estate to establish the Nobel Prizes, to be awarded annually without distinction of nationality.
BERIA LAVRENTIY: (1899-1953) Soviet Politician & Marshal, Chief of the Soviet secret police, NKVD, under Joseph Stalin during WWII. Executed. Beria was responsible of the Katyn massacre in Poland and of the expansion of the Gulag labor camps, overseeing the Great Purge. He attended the Yalta Conference with Stalin, who introduced him to U.S President Roosevelt as “our Himmler”. A good T.L.S., `L. Beria´, in bold pencil, three pages, on three separate sheets, 4to, Moscow, 1st of January 1940, on the NKVD printed letterhead, to Tovarisch Voroshilov Marshal of the Soviet Union, People´s Commissar for Defence of the USSR, in Cyrillic. The war-time document bears to the upper right corner a red ink stamp stating Top Secret. Also signed by Kliment Y. Voroshilov (1881-1969), `KV´, in blue pencil, to the upper left border. The document naming NKVD officers who should be removed, and saying `Department of Military Counterintelligence of Leningrad Military District informs:.. At the army headquarters regular and quick communication with the corps and divisions headquarters is still not established. Combat order of the army headquarters are received with delay. There are serious shortcomings in the ensuring of..´ Further detailing three reports to support such assertion, related to lack of rifles supply, to the death of an officer and two soldiers because of late order communication forwarded, etc.. and stating in part `On the opening lines there is a need for mortars. Nevertheless, Commander of the 90th Rifle Division Zaitsev agreed with regiment commanders that there is no need for mortars because nobody at the subunits knows how to use them..´ Signed by Beria in his capacity as People's Commissar for Internal Affairs of the URSS Two binder holes to the left border, not affecting the text or signatures. VG £250-350After Stalin's death in March 1953, Lavrentiy Beria became First Deputy Premier of the Soviet Union and head of the Ministry of Internal Affairs. He formed a troika alongside Malenkov and Molotov that briefly led the country in Stalin's place. However, in a coup d´état launched by Nikita Khrushchev with help from Marshal Zhukov on June 1953, Beria was removed from power, arrested on charges of 357 counts of rape and treason. He was sentenced to death and executed in December 1953.
ESCOUSSE VICTOR: (1813-1832) French Writer, his real name being Victor Laserre. His first playwright Farruck le Maure was quite successful, but when his second and third failed Escousse committed suicide at the very early age of nineteen. Very rare A.L.S., Victor Escousse, an attractive signature, one page, 8vo, [Paris], Sunday 10th October 1830, to Baron Taylor, in French. Escousse requests three theatre tickets from his correspondent, a French Artist, and states `I will visit you on Monday morning, I am worried, I will let you know why.´ further referring to his friend who together with him committed suicide `Ah! Please send me through Auguste a volume of Voyage dans l´Ancienne France. I will not repeat that I will take great care of it..´ With blank address leaf, with small area of paper loss due to the opening of the letter. Small overall age wear, otherwise G £250-350 Victor Escousse and Auguste Lebras, nineteen and eighteen years old respectively, both French authors, committed suicide by asphyxia in February 1832. Escousse wrote a last message including the epigraph he wished for his book. Alfred de Musset mentions Escousse in his poem Rolla.
ALEXANDER II OF RUSSIA: (1818-1881) Emperor of Russia 1855-81. Assassinated. An excellent L.S., Alexander, a good and bold signature example, two pages, folio, Saint Petersburg, 30th April 1855, "On the first year of our reign", to King Ferdinand II, in Cyrillic. Alexander II as Emperor and Autocrat of all Russias congratulates his correspondent stating `We have received a letter from Your Majesty addressed to the Emperor Nicholas Pavlovich of blessed memory, our dear father, in which You inform that Your spouse gave birth to a Princess…´ Countersigned to the bottom of the second page, beneath the Tsar´s signature, by State Chancellor Nesselrode. With blank integral leaf. Accompanied by the original envelope, addressed to King Ferdinand II, with an extensive presentation in Cyrillic, and bearing a large paper seal affixed in very fine condition. EX £1500-2000 Alexander II responds to a King Ferdinand II letter received, a letter which was sent to Emperor Nicholas I after the Italian Princess birth on 21st January, but in the meantime, in February 1855, Nicholas I passed away and Alexander II responds as heir and new Emperor of Russia, although his coronation would only take place few months later. Ferdinand II (1810-1859) King of the Two Sicilies 1830-59. He succeeded his father Francis I at the early age of twenty.Princess Maria Luisa of Bourbon-Two Sicilies (1855-1874) Youngest daughter of King Ferdinand II of the Two Sicilies and Maria Theresa of Austria. Princess Maria Luisa was known for her charity to the poor. The Princess died at the very early age of 19 shortly after her return from Egypt suffering high fever.Karl Nesselrode (1780-1862) Russian Count and Diplomat.
SAINTE-BEUVE CHARLES AUGUSTIN: (1804-1869) French literary Critic. Proust´s masterwork A la Recherche du temps perdu develops the ideas contained in his well-known set of essays Contre Sainte-Beuve ("Against Sainte-Beuve"). A very interesting A.L.S., Ste-Beuve, one page, 8vo, n.p., n.d., Saturday, to a woman [Jeanne Destourbet], in French. Sainte Beuve starts his letter stating `My dear and kind friend, I was feeling bad yesterday, and to my great regret had to leave suddenly although didn´t want to. Pasha Halil Bey had invited me for dinner next Saturday together with you..´ further sending intimate compliments to his correspondent `Yesterday your beauty was enhanced and superb. I can see that you have more than one kind of beauty, it´s as per your wish, depending on the day, on your whims, I like both. I even like the third, when you wear your robe de chamber, your hair half-combed..´ A letter of good association. With integral blank leaf. Together with A.L.S., Ste-Beuve, one page, 8vo, n.p., n.d., Friday, to a Monsieur de Lavergne, in French. Sainte Beuve politely rejects his correspondent´s dinner invitation, stating in part `I am just returning from my library, (today was my day) so tired and exhausted that I cannot accept the pleasure of having dinner with you. I will think about it with sadness on my bed where I will spend the rest of the evening…´ With a blind embossed seal from Bath to the upper left corner. Bearing to the verso the correspondent´s name and address in Sainte-Beuve´s hand. Very small folding, otherwise VG £60-90 Jeanne Tourbey (1837- ?) Also known as Jeanne Destourbet was a very famous courtesan of her time. Prince Jerome Napoleon offered her a large house in Paris where she used to receive a long list of lovers including Alexandre Dumas, Téophile Gautier, Gustave Flaubert, Sainte-Beuve, and Pasha Halil Serif who spent several millions in presents and looking after her. Pasha Halil Serif (1831-1879) Also known as Halil Bey, Ottoman diplomat and art collector. Appointed commissioner to the International Exhibition in Paris in 1855, and later Ottoman Ambassador to Athens and Saint Petersburg where he began collecting art. Téophile Gautier described Pasha´s collection as "The first ever to be formed by a child of Islam". Pasha Halil serif was introduced to Gustave Courbet by Sainte-Beuve, and commissioned Le Sommeil ("The Sleepers") and L´origine du monde from him. His collection included several Delacroix masterpieces.
EINSTEIN ALBERT: (1879-1955) German-born Theoretical Physicist, Nobel Prize winner for Physics, 1921. An excellent and lengthy A.L.S., `Papa´, two pages, 4to, 10th April 1936, to his son, in German. Einstein refers to Professor Pauli and to Sigmund Freud, and states `Once again, a long time has passed since I had last time written to you…I am sitting here in my study, wrapped in a blanket and still freezing cold, just because they are thinking it is Spring and therefore the furnace must be turned off…´, further referring to his day by day work and to Princeton `I keep on working with the same young man on problems which are so difficult that they keep on amazing me over my own courage. When I am losing steam, I just need to look, from my giant window, to the meadows with flowers and trees, and in the distance I can see the top of the tall tower of the University buildings, in the style of University buildings seen in England..´ further adding an amusing comment `It seems to me that only English things are held in high esteem here. If you say that you are coming from Switzerland, they consider that as being comical, because they think there is only chocolate and cheese there..´ Einstein further refers again to his work `I hardly get around reading books. Scientific work is practically eating you up, especially once the elasticity of your youth is gone.. From Germany, I am hardly hearing anything directly any longer, because anything and everybody there that I had trusted in, is either dead or scattered all over the world. Prof. Pauli from Zurich is here with me, he is a very young and clever physicist who probably sees me as some sort of fossil.´ Before concluding Einstein makes very interesting comments referring to Freud, stating ´Freud will be turning 80 soon. I finally have come to the conclusion that he actually has been correct in his main theses. From a very reliable source, I have heard accounts about ordinary case studies of his that defy any other explanation. I must admit, that in this regard, you certainly saw the light a lot sooner than I did. The reason probably was…´ A letter of excellent content and of good association. About VG £6000-9000 Eduard Einstein (1910-1965) Second son of Albert Einstein from his first wife Mileva. Nicknamed by his father "Tetel". Edward was diagnosed with schizophrenia at the age of twenty. It has been often reported that the drugs and "cures" of the time damaged rather than aided the young Einstein, his memory and cognitive abilities were deeply affected by electroconvulsive therapy treatments. Albert Einstein emigrated to the United States from Germany in 1933 after the rise of the Nazi German government and never saw his son again, although they corresponded regularly. Eduard lived most of the time at the psychiatric clinic in Zurich, where he died in 1965 of a stroke at age 55. Wolfgang Pauli (1900-1958) Austrian-born Swiss & American Physicist. A pioneer of quantum physics. Nobel Prize in Physics in 1945 for his "decisive contribution through his discovery of a new law of nature, the exclusion principle of Pauli principle", the basis of a theory of the structure of matter. Widely recognized as one of the most brilliant Physicians of the XXth century.Sigmund Freud (1856-1939) Austrian Neurologist & Founder of Psychoanalysis. Freud formulated the Oedipus complex and developed his theory on the Analysis of Dreams. He lived and worked in Vienna until 1938 when he escaped the Nazis and went to the United Kingdom where he lived in exile the last year of his life.
AUGUSTUS III: (1696-1763) King of Poland and Grand Duke of Lithuania 1734-63. Elector of Saxony in the Holy Roman Empire 1733-63 as Frederick Augustus II. Rare A.L.S., `Auguste´, one page, 4to, Warsaw, first of April 1759, to his son Xavier, in French. The King states in part `...I write this letter to you my dear Son, to send you my compliments on the day of your birthday, praying God for his holy blessings on you..´ further saying `..I have been informed that according to last news received that the Russians have taken possession of the city of Grossen (Grossenhain), and at the same time taken the control of the passageway of…´ With blank address leaf in the King´s hand. Bearing to the address leaf a red wax seal in good condition, and a hole due to the opening of the letter. Very small overall age wear, otherwise VG £1500-2000Although King Augustus´ fifteen children, sons and daughters, were baptized with the name Xavier or Xaveria among several others, the letter is most probably addressed to his second surviving son Prince Franz Xavier of Saxony (1730-1806).
PROUST MARCEL: (1871-1922) French Novelist and Essayist. Best known for his major novel A la Recherche du Temps Perdu (`In search of Lost Time´). Rare and excellent A.L.S., `Marcel´, a large good signature example, four pages, 8vo, n.p. [Paris], n.d. [c.1915-1916], to Albert, in French. Proust writes vertically and horizontally, and numbers the pages as they are written in different order, first referring to his poor health, and stating `My little dear Albert, I have just been through few long weeks with overwhelming fever which did not even permit me to trace a line. I am better now but my eyes troubles have increased and for this reason I cannot write until I will meet an oculist and will have glasses. But to visit an oculist you have to be able to get up. Vicious circle.´ Further sending a reproach to his correspondent, saying `Your letter seems to say that you have been ill, I would like to read more about this. But, bad boy, you never write your address and therefore I need two days searching in the dumpers of papers I have to find an old letter of you where the address is shown.´ Before concluding Proust comments his financial situation and states `My ruin is slowly but surely being completed..´ and sends his best wishes to Albert´s sisters and parents. Paper with two worlds water mark "Papier des Deux Mondes". Folded, with small overall foxing stains, otherwise G £2500-3500Albert Nahmias (1886-1979) was a broker who became friend and confident of Proust. They met for the first time in 1908 at Cabourg where Albert together with his sisters, Anita and Estie, and their parents used to spend holidays. He also worked as his secretary, helping with transcriptions, dealing with editors, etc… Albert and his sisters were models of Albertine Simonet in his most prominent work In Search of Lost Time.
NASER AL-DIN SHAH QAJAR: (1831-1896) King of Persia 1848-96. First Iranian monarch to visit Europe. Assassinated. An excellent original carte-de-visite photograph, unsigned, the Thiebault image from Paris showing the King of Persia seated, in a half-length pose, wearing uniform studded with diamonds and with a sword over his lap. Circa 1873. VG £120-200
SHOSTAKOVICH & GAGARIN: Dmitri Shostakovich (1906-1975) Russian Composer, & Yuri Gagarin (1934-1968) Russian Cosmonaut. First human to travel in space, 1961. Multiple signed T.L., two pages, folio, n.p., n.d. [1965]. Signed by Shostakovich and Gagarin, both in Cyrillic, also signed by Galina Ulanova (1910-1998) Russian Ballerina. Widely considered one of the greatest ballerinas of XXth century; Nikolay Semyonov (1896-1986) Russian Physicist and Chemist. Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1956; Sergei Konenkov (1874-1971) Russian Sculptor. Known as the Russian Rodin, and Sergei Gerassimov (1906-1985) Russian film Director. All have signed in Cyrillic to the second page. The typed letter being a manifesto against the Vietnam war which threatens peace in the world, and against the American troops bombing, napalm use, massacres, and women and children killing. The Soviet artists and scientists make a call to gather representatives of culture all over the world to create the "Blue Book for Peace". Over all age wear, mostly to the edges. Staple to the upper left corner. About G £800-1200
GUS: (1911-1997) Gustave Erlich. French comic Cartoonist. Well remembered for his publications in French newspapers Le Figaro, Le Canard Enchainé, and many others. An excellent signed original watercolour, `Gus´, one page, oblong folio, drawing paper, n.p., 21st November 1985, in French. Gus has drawn a funny sketch showing Ronald Reagan and Mikhail Gorbachev, with the legend `End of the Geneva Summit´ in his hand, on the occasion of the first meeting between the two leaders to put end to arming race between the two countries. LANDER RICHARD: (1804-1834) English Explorer. Lander and his brother were the first Europeans to follow the course of the river Niger and discover that it led to the Atlantic. Lander died at the very early age of 29 during his third and last expedition to Africa. Extremely rare A.N.S., `Lander´, to a clipped 5 x 3 piece. Lander reports on the Western Africa expedition of 1825, leaded by Hugh Clapperton, and states in full `Lander Servent to The Late Cpt Clapperton, Commander of his Majestys Affrican Mission of discovery and only Survivor.´, and alongside Lander lists the members of the expedition who died, saying `Died - Cpt Clapperton - Cpt Pearce - Dr. Morrison - Dr. Dickson - Marchants, Mr. Houston - Mr. James - Servents, Doven - Clumbous - Lang..´ A document of very interesting and historic content. The irregularly clipped piece has been affixed to an oblong 8vo page. F £250-350Hugh Clapperton (1788-1827) Scottish Naval Officer and Explorer. Clapperton died on 13th April 1827 near Sokoto, in present-day Nigeria. Lander remained as the only European survivor of the expedition.
SKORZENY OTTO: (1908-1975) Austrian SS-Standartenführer of World War II. A good signed 4 x 6 photograph, `Otto Skorzeny´, adding beneath his name his military rank, the image showing Skorzeny in a close-up portrait pose, smoking. C.1945. Signed in bold blue ink to the lower white border, also adding `Gran Sasso, 12th November 1943´, in his hand. VG £500-800The Gran Sasso raid, which Skorzeny refers to, was the rescue of Italian dictator Benito Mussolini, ordered personally by Adolf Hitler and executed by two German commandos in September 1943. Skorzeny´s two units arrived first and rescued Mussolini without a single shot.
MENUHIN YEHUDI: (1916-1999) American-born British Violinist. Two good signed photographs by Menuhin. The first being an unusual signed and inscribed 10 x 7.5 photograph `To James, recalling our many pleasant days at Shepherd's Bush, Menuhin´, the fine image by Gainsborough, depicting Menuhin holding his violin in a half-length pose, and smiling over a score on the piano, with Gerald Moore (1899-1987), English Pianist. Signed in purple ink to a largely dark area at the base of the image, with inscription difficult to read, also dated July [1945] in his hand. Together with a signed colour 4 x 6 photograph, `Yehudi Menuhin´, showing Menuhin in a close-up head and shoulders pose. Signed in bold black ink to the lower white border. G to VG, 2 £120-200
PUCCINI GIACOMO: (1858-1924) Italian Composer. An excellent A.M.Q.S., `Giacomo Puccini´, a large and good signature example, to a 4to page removed from an autograph album. Puccini has penned a three bars musical quotation which he entitles La Boheme, adding also beneath the quote `Mi chiamano Mimi´, corresponding to the well-known soprano aria of the first act of La Boheme. Dated in Milan, 10th January 1897, in his hand. Very small overall age wear and small toning to the borders, otherwise VG £800-1200La Boheme is an opera composed by Giacomo Puccini. The premiere, conducted by Arturo Toscanini, was in Turin on 1st February 1896. Less than a year before the present quote was signed.
SAINT-SAËNS CAMILLE: (1835-1921) French Composer. A good A.L.S., `C. Saint-Saëns´, three pages, 8vo, n.p., 18th December 1904, on Saint-Saëns printed stationery, to Pauline Viardot, in French. Saint-Saëns states in part `My dear friend, I have given a recommendation letter addressed to you for Mme B. Gianoli who has recently sang two of my works on concert. It is a small woman, with not a really great voice but who has a talent of first rank, an unusual musical intelligence and an even more extraordinary modesty. Her dream would be to get some advices from you…´ The letter bears to the upper left corner a blind embossed seal with the composer´s initials. One very small stain not affecting the text or signature, otherwise VG £150-200Pauline viardot (1821-1910) French Mezzo-Soprano and pedagogue of Spanish descent. A leading figure opera singer figure.
APOLLINAIRE GUILLAUME: (1880-1918) French Poet, Playwright and Novelist. One of the forefathers of Surrealism, Apollinaire is credited with coining the word Surrealism. A good A.L.S., `Guil. Apollinaire´, one page, 8vo, Paris, 20th September 1918, to a colleague [Jean Cocteau], in French. The letter bears the printed heading of the Minister´s office, Ministry of the Colonies, Apollinaire stating `My dear colleague, I am sorry that you feel offended because of my letter, and because you have talent , come and visit me at the Excelsior…´ With blank integral leaf. Folded, with very small overall age wear. VG. £1200-2000Only a month and a half after writing the present letter Apollinaire died in Spain, of flu pandemic, at the early age of 38.Jean Cocteau (1889-1963) French Poet, Novelist & Director. Cocteau and Apollinaire first met in December 1916, and exchanged correspondence since then for the last two years of Apollinaire´s life.
MARIA CHRISTINA OF AUSTRIA: (1574-1621) Princess of Transylvania and Moldavia, Sovereign regnant in 1598 when her husband Sigismund Bathory abdicated for the first time. Born Archduchess of Austria and sister of Holy Roman Emperor Ferdinand II. Rare L.S., Maria Christierna, one page, folio, 28th September [1597], to Alfonso Bishop of Larissano, Apostolic Nuncio to Warsaw, in Latin. The Princess thanks her correspondent for the letters previously received and indicates that they accept to participate in the conference of mediation and expects a good end to their affairs. With blank address leaf, bearing a royal paper seal affixed. With edges very slightly trimmed, otherwise G £400-600The marriage between Maria Christina of Austria and Sigismund Bathory was regarded as a major political gain, as Sigismund was a former vassal of the Ottoman Empire, and was now establishing close ties with the Holy Roman Empire. Emperor Rudolf II appointed Sigismund Prince of the Holy Roman Empire and also secured the possession of Transylvania, if the couple remained without offspring. After long negotiations, the agreement was signed, however, this union proved to be completely unhappy. Sigismund, after a disastrous wedding night, refused to consummate the marriage and sent his wife to a fortress in Kovar Vara, where Maria Christina was kept as prisoner. After her husband second abdication Maria Christina went back to Austria to a convent where she would die.
TIBBETS PAUL: (1915-2007) American Brigadier General of the United States Air Force, pilot of the Enola Gay, the first aircraft to drop an atomic bomb in the history of warfare. Multiple signed 8 x 10 photograph, signed by Tibbets `Paul Tibbets - Pilot - Enola Gay´, the image showing the destroyed city of Hiroshima and the mushroom cloud. Also signed by Theodore Van Kirk (1921-2014) American Navigator in the U.S Army Air Forces, crew member of the Enola Gay on the Hiroshima day. GUITRY SACHA: (1885-1957) French Actor & Director. An excellent and very interesting lengthy Manuscript in Guitry´s hand, n,p., n.d., eighty pages (80), 4to, in French. Written to front pages, either in pencil, or ink, or even some typed, the draft contains multiple side annotations, amendments, crossed paragraphs, etc.. The manuscript is a vibrant advocacy in favour of Theatre and actors, denigrating the cinema which he considers a threat. To the first page and sentence Guitry states `Ladies and Gentlemen, the Theatre according to me is neither a job nor a profession, not even an art… It is a passion!´ further saying in part `..imagine the anxiety of a man of theater who watches the spectators deserting the theatre halls.. they settle for cinematography, for this dying image, without relief, without colour, plane and which is in fact the reproduction of a travesty… The theatre at this time is only risking one thing, to become again an Art, as it was time ago… Why don´t you applaud a singer who has just sang on your television screen? Because he has not taken the risk to fail his natural G, and he can´t fail… Therefore no interest…And once the film is produced, you cannot change anything anymore… The cinema cannot replace the theatre in the same way the photography could not replace the painting…´ Guitry reproduces a dialogue of a playwright and states `Do you realize the difficulty of playing such an irresistible dialogue scene of Courteline in a film? An actor cannot know at which exact moment and for how long the spectators will be laughing…actors on scene can stop when they want..´ An extremely interesting and lengthy manuscript, full of curious and unexpected comments and comparisons, `..the best two actors who ever existed are Shakespeare and Moliere, both comedians. Because they were not actors playing their playwrights, no, they were comedians who realizing that the existing playwrights were bad, they decided, thanks god, to write them themselves!´, Guitry also refers on several occasions to his father´s comments and thoughts, mentioning playwrights, one of his own that he is about to play `Un homme d´hier et une femme d´aujourd´hui´ (`A man of yesterday time and a woman of today´), also referring to religion and actors `When Adrienne Lecouvreur died, this admirable tragedian passed away on the same week that a famous English actress died, Anna Oldfield. And while the English actress was buried at Westminster, the French tragedian was refused the ecclesiastical burial, and was buried during the night in a wasteland.´ Small overall age wear, otherwise G £3000-4000

A pair of Staffordshire pottery equestrian figures of Thomas Parr type of Don Quixote and Sancho Panza, circa 1860, typically modelled facing left and right on titled bases, 24cm & 20cm high; and a later model of Sancho Panza of William Kent ltd. type Provenance: Property of Hermione, the late Countess of Ranfurly (1913-2001) and thence by descent.The Countess of Ranfurly (1913-2001) came to public attention with the publication of the first volume of her diaries To War With Whitaker 1939-45 (Heinemann 1994) in which she details her trials and tribulations following her husband, a lieutenant in the yeomanry regiment, the Sherwood Rangers through the North African campaigns with his valet Whitaker. After the war and with a house to fill she assembled a notable collection of mid 19th century Staffordshire figures, many of which were photographed for Commander Gordon-Pugh's seminal work on the subject.

A Regency partridge wood and satinwood crossbanded library table, circa 1815, attributed to Gillows, the rectangular top with rounded corners, above two frieze drawers opposed by two false frieze drawers, on lyre shaped supports joined by turned double stretcher, terminating in acanthus cast gilt metal caps and castors, 75cm high, 46cm wide, 79cm deep Provenance: Private Collection, London For a related writing table, see Christies London, The English Collector, 19th November 2015, Lot 621. This table is conceived in the French antique manner promoted by the connoisseur Thomas Hope and illustrated in his London mansion museum guide Household Furniture and Interior Decoration (1807). With its 'Apollo' Grecian-lyre trestles and star handles, it relates to sofa tables and games-tables popularised by Gillows in the first quarter of the 19th century. A related pair of sofa games tables of this pattern were commissioned by Thomas Anson, 1st Viscount Anson (1767-1818) for the library at Shugborough, Staffordshire, in the early 19th century, when alterations were being carried out by the architect Samuel Wyatt (d. 1807).Please note the measurements should read: 75cm high, 146cm wide, 79cm deep not as originally printed in the catalogue.
