GREGÓRIO LOPES - 1490-1550, Jesus praying in the Garden of Olives, oil on oak wood, c. 1530, small restoration, support with minor traces of woodworms. Notes: represented in CARVALHO, José Alberto Seabra de - "Gregório Lopes". Lisbon: Edições INAPA, 2004, pp. 40-41. Work studied and presented by CAETANO, Joaquim Oliveira - "Uma desconhecida obra-prima de Gregório Lopes". In "Estudo da pintura portuguesa - Oficina de Gregório Lopes - Actas" - Lisbon: José de Figueiredo Institute, 1999, pp. 129-132. Gregório Lopes was one of the most important Portuguese painters of the first half of the 16th century, having occupied the position of royal painter to King D. Manuel I from 1521, a position that would be confirmed by King D. João III, and which he held until his death in 1550. Trained in the workshop of Jorge Afonso, his father-in-law, he worked with other contemporary artists such as Francisco Henriques, Garcia Fernandes or Cristóvão de Figueiredo, with whom he was one of the main people responsible for the renewal and updating of the taste in Portuguese painting of his time. His workshop was responsible for the execution of some of the most important works that were carried out in Portugal in the first half of the 16th century, namely the altarpiece of Saint Benedict, initially made for the convent of Saint Francis in Lisbon; the altarpiece of Paradise or the set of panels he made for the Convent of Christ in Tomar and for the church of Saint John the Baptist in the same city. Two other paintings, "Resurrection of Lazarus" and "Ascension of Mary Magdalene into Heaven", are in the Olivenza Museum - see https://museodeolivenza.com/salas/otras/sala-de-arte-sacro/ accessed on 3-3-2025 at 11:55., Dim. - 114 x 134,5 cm

MANUSCRIPT.- QUEIROZ, José Maria Eça de (1845-1900).- O Primo Bazílio.- 19th C. (ca. 1875/1876).- 2 f.; 400x124 mm e 427x128 mm., Autograph manuscripts in ink (not signed), on two sheets (written on both sides of the sheets) in an elongated format, usually called “single sheets”, ready for typography, with numerous amendments and crossed out lines. Sheet 1 (400x124 mm): ±50 lines, with indication 321/1 and 321/2; Sheet 2 (427x128 mm): ± 45 lines. These are probably two fragments from a first version of the novel, which was initially intended to be entitled “O Primo João de Brito” and whose pages are currently scattered. In this regard, one should see the detailed description by Ernesto Guerra Da Cal (Lengua y estilo de Eça de Queiroz: bibliografia queirociana, tomo 1º, Coimbra, 1975), no. 1418. OF GRAND TOUR INTEREST: AN ITALIAN BRONZE OF A FAUN WITH A WINE SACK AFTER THE ANTIQUEProbably Neapolitan, Early 20th Century On variegated marble base, 51cm highA comparable example is held in the National Trust’s collection at Anglesey Abbey, Cambridgeshire. This model is after a bronze fountain figure dating to the late 2nd / early 1st BC, excavated at the House of the Centenary, Pompeii, in 1879.  Wine (or water from the fountain) would have originally poured from the sack into a cup held by the Satyr (attendant to the god of wine, Bacchus). Like the Anglesey Abbey example, the cup is now missing.  Many bronze foundries operated in Naples from the late 18th into the 19th Century, making souvenirs of ancient figures for tourists, many of the anncient originals now held in the Museo Archeological National in Napes (Inv 111495) This example  or a very closely related figures is illustrated in the Chiurazzi catalogue, one of the busiest and most distinguished foundries at the turn of the early 20th Century. Bronzes could be finished in a choice of three patinas: Pompeii (green), Herculaneum (dark) and Renaissance (lustrous brown). The Faun with a wineskin is one of the finest bronze figures to have been discovered at Pompeii. Today in the Museo Archeologico Nazionale in Naples (Inv. 111495, height 51 cm.; Stefano De Caro, ed., Il Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Napoli, Naples 1994, p. 206), the bronze figure was found in the House of the Centenary (Casa del Centenario, IX, 8, 3-6), discovered in 1879 and given its name to mark the 18th centenary of the eruption of Vesuvius in A.D. 1879, that buried Pompeii and Herculaneum. The fountain figure was found during the first excavations of the house in 1879. Datable to the late second or early first century B.C. and an excellent example of Hellenistic style, it was found standing on a small tufa base in the middle of the rounded part of the north edge of the house’s bathing pool. Water would originally have poured from the mouth of the wineskin into a cup that the satyr was holding in his right hand.
